I've been doing this for four years now (two monitors connected through my Surface Dock; the Surface screen itself covered by the Type Cover) and I just used the recommended power modes. I can go days without removing the PC from the dock, and I can have strings of 8-10 hours days with the Surface away from any charging at all. Despite this pattern and heavy usage, I have not noticed any issues with my battery. (Once I had a battery issue but it was a faulty unit, replaced for free by MS under warranty.) The best tip I've found is that given by MS: About once a month, allow the device to hit

Hi there, hope this msg find you well. Thanks for your videos I have founf then helpful. Wanted to ask, I haven´t been able to adjust the scale size of the external monitor, it is like settings only allows me to adjust the main surface screan. I have the scale setting at 150% which is the size i work with well in surface but the view in the monitor is insanely bigger, but even setting it at 100% (which is small for surface) it is still massive for the external monitor. Wondering if you can help on this, best regards

A couple of things to note: You can scale the external monitor to a different scale, however, it cannot be in duplicate mode, you must use Extended Desktop. When using Extended Desktop, in Display Settings click on the monitor at the top and then scroll down and set it's scale.

This was helpful, but I think I need something else. I do use a larger screen and the mouse/cursor is on both the surface pro laptop 2 and the large screen. What I am looking for that I can use my mouse/cursor on the large screen when I plug in my external hard drive. I am really bad, plus I do not like using the tracking pad to move the cursor. Is there a way I can continue using the cursor on the large screen when I plug in my external hard drive, so I can easily navigate using a mouse instead of the tracking pad?

Hi there, thanks for your question. I'll do my best to understand what you're after. There are a number of mixed concepts that you've mentioned in your comment though. For example, there is a Surface Pro, and a Surface Laptop (2), but not a Surface Pro Laptop 2. So I'm going to assume that you have a Surface Laptop 2. And you mentioned an external hard drive, which is a device to store your files on. But the way you've referred to it, I suspect that you are referring to a Desktop PC. So, I'll assume that you have a Desktop PC (with one or more large screens attached) and a Surface Laptop 2. And I'll assume by the question, and that you mentioned that you are "bad" that you're not especially tech savvy. Based on that, I'd suggest that having 2 computers is not the best setup for you. It adds a lot of complication and potential for things to go wrong. Instead, I'd suggest getting a docking station for your Surface Laptop 2. This will connect with your screens, mouse and keyboard from the Desktop PC, and effectively replace the Desktop PC altogether. Then, you can undock the Surface when you want to leave the desk and go mobile. But when you are there at the desk plugged into the docking station it will be setup exactly like your Desktop PC. I'd also suggest that you get someone local to help you in setting it up. Also, you mentioned that you don't like using the trackpad to move the cursor. The good news is that you can plug a mouse directly into your Surface and use that at any time. That said, I recommend learning to use the trackpad as well, since it is very useful when you're not at a desk. A couple of videos I'd recommend to watch: Surface Touchpad Tips and Tricks kzitem.info/news/bejne/yaSGyaSJhXWlppw Use the Surface Dock kzitem.info/news/bejne/uqeGmaqAaXR1mIY Ports and Cables: How to connect a display to your Surface kzitem.info/news/bejne/zq9rl6OAs6lznag

Looks like that display is a 4K display. The Surface Dock is getting a little old now and it only supports 2x 4K at 30Hz. So it will likely work if you drop the refresh rate to 30Hz. I tried just saying "I have 3 screens" but it didn't seem to work. Might there be some step involved in that?

Shown at 2:10. If you're display is not showing up there then you have a different issue. Check your cables. What kind of displays are you trying to connect? What device do you have?

So is it possible to use USB A port to connect Surface to 2nd display?? Thanks!

It is possible with an old style Display Link dock or adapter. It's not ideal though as it creates unnecessary CPU performance overhead.

Great videos. I’ve tried to connect 2 external monitors to my surface pro following these instructions but it doesn’t recognize my monitors and I can’t get it to work. Can you recommend 2 monitors known to work with surface pro?

I'm not sure why it's not working for you. I have used used LG, Samsung and Phillips monitors with Surface over the years. Any recent monitor would work. I'd be looking at cables before changing monitors.

If you want to display to two monitors do you need the Microsoft Dock? Or can you use two different adapters?
@oztabletpc

Depends what you have. On current models a USB-C dock is an option. On all models you could use a USB-A dock too. There is also display port daisy chaining (more complicated). The Surface Dock is a good and easy option.

This will not work on the early surface pro laptops, unless you have the surface dock which is about $150. I have the 1st gen surface pro and it just simply does not have the power to project like this and no matter which combination of dongles you eschew together, it needs the surface dock.
