Thanks for this informative video, I watched the Canon video on WiFi connecting the camera and they practically insist on access point connection, at no point did they mention connecting via a network. Thank you for covering this so thoroughly and for including the information about the ipv6 and 5ghz issues.

Are you planning on updating this for the new R5 Mark II? I just purchased one, and it's menu options are different, and I aam having trouble connecting it to my Mac. Also, the version of EOS Utilities htat I was able to fin does notw work at all - just sits frozen on my screen. Canon's official website doesn't even list it for R5 Mk II. I would settle for direct connection via a USB cable, but when I try that the PC icon appears on the Canon screen but my Mac does not mount the cards as external drives like it does with my OM1. Any thoughts appreciated, thanks.

Yes, I am planning on updating this for the R5 Mark II. Actually I'm expecting there will be a lot more content on the R5-2's networking capabilities. As for your problem with EOS Uitility, you need version 3.18.11. It's listed in the software and drivers section of the R5-2's support page (this is a link to the page from Canon USA: www.usa.canon.com/support/p/eos-r5-mark-ii). I had an older version on my MBP and it would just quit/crash when I tried to connect to it, updating to 3.18.11 and it seems to work. Once you have the right version of EOS Utility installed, you should be able to use it to download the images from the camera, even over USB. Unfortunately, Canon cameras don't show up as storage devices when connected via USB for some reason. However, you can use Image Capture.app to access it's storage over USB and download the images that way. (As an aside, this applies to all Canon cameras that I'm aware of at least). Hope that helps.

Interesting Jayeson. I got my R5 when it came out the other year, and the Canon Connect at first was fine. Sadly I updated the firmware...now on was on1.6 and Canon Connect would not work and then updated to 1.70 but still no improvement. I was able to control camera from my iphone 10 and import photos from my Camera to the iPhone. That has stopped working, there has been no change with my latest iPhone14. I can connect Camera to Eos Utility on my laptop. I just cannot connect the camera using it as a wirelss access point directly to my phone. I have deleted / cleared the cameras connection settings sevreal time. It just does not work anymore. I have the latest Canon Connect app. Tearing what little hair out that i have left!! Can you help? Thank you. Ian

The easiest way I've found to make this work reliably, is to setup camera to connect to the phone over Bluetooth first/only. Once you've done that, you can "promote" that to a full WiFi connection with the camera as an AP by selecting something that requires it on the phone (like Remote live view shooting). You'll be prompted on your phone to connect to a new wireless network (will be something like your camera's model, it'll make sense when you see it) and then it should work. I just checked (iPhone 12 mini, latest Canon connect software, firmware 1.7.0) and it worked for me doing it that way without a problem. If your phone gives you an error in the connecting to the network part, then on your camera go to the WiFi devices menu and disconnect the connected device (which will probably be your phone) and try again. Hope that helps.

Canon R5 + Windows 11. It used to work before, although I occasionally experienced some difficulties, it eventually worked. Today, I tried to connect my camera and EOS Utility couldn't detect it. I tried everything: reinstalling DPP and EOS Utility with the latest versions, turning off the firewall, updating the camera firmware to version 1.8.1, and resetting the communication settings on the camera. However, everything still stops at a "pairing (connection) with the computer" screen on the camera, and EOS Utility still can't detect the camera. It's worth noting that my R5 did connect to my iPhone CameraConnect app using the same WiFi network. Do you have any ideas on what else I could try?

The only thing left to check that I can think of is that you don't have a firewall blocking the connection on your computer. As far as I know, the Windows 11 firewall shouldn't block the connection, but a 3rd party one might.

Remove memory card, insert in card reader, stop wasting your time with inconvenient and SLOW wireless from cameras. It's a gimmick at best and regardless of wireless hardware and network settings, the transfer rate from the camera (regardless of memory card speed) is insanely slow compared to just taking out the memory card and inserting it in a card reader.

@@Desert-edDave I use this feature to display 'live' images from the camera on the studio's screen. It works fast enough while sending only S2-sized images, eliminating the need for restrictive cables and allowing greater mobility with the camera.

I've got capture one tethering wireless to my R5 but obviously it kills the wifi internet connection. Do you know if it's possible to connect to the camera and wifi internet at the same time? Thanks
@PointsInFocus
7 ай бұрын
I don't use CaptureOne, so I'm not entirely familiar with how it specifically. However, as long as you're connecting the camera to the same WiFi network as your computer, the one that has internet access, and not using the camera to create a separate WiFi network, you won't lose internet access while tethering. On the camera, when you do the network setup, make sure you're selecting the name of your WiFi network, not picking the option to let the camera create its own. On your computer you shouldn't have to change network settings at all.

I have an R6 MkII, but I think that my question would apply to any recent R models. Is it possible to connect a camera to the EOS Utility on multiple computers hosted on the same network? I'm not trying to do this simultaneously, but I would like to swap on-demand between my laptop and my workstation.
@PointsInFocus

Yes, you can save multiple computer connections on the camera. You do have to disconnect and reconnect from the camera side of things, but once you have the computers setup in the camera you don't have to reenter anything.

I have new macbook pro (M3 max, sonoma 14.1) and canon 5dm4 (updated), and for days have been trying to get it to connect for live view remote shooting (for video). I can use a tether cable and use the camera for Zoom meetings easily, but EOS Utility (3) aren't working at all! The text is grayed out and it won't let me click anything. I have tried connecting the camera to wifi (not the 5g) and to macbook, nothing is working. Is there a glitch somewhere with the software and newer macbooks? thank you!

What I've found is that the MacOS firewall breaks things if it's not correctly configured (this works on Mac OS 14.3, on an M1 MBP). Under System Settings, Network, Firewall, Options. Add EOS Utility and EOS Utility 3 to the list of apps (click the little + icon in the bottom left corner, and find the apps in /Mac HD/Applications/Canon Utilities/. Then make sure those two apps are set to allow incoming connections. Then at the bottom of that firewall options window, make sure "Enable stealth mode" is off. Hope that helps.

@dr.johnna if you haven’t already you might also want to try deleting the profile on your camera and it from scratch (including the WiFi password too). I’ve had that be a problem in the past too. Everything looks right on the camera but something gets messed up in however the camera and computer store the pairing information. IMO, Canon needs to really put some work into improving the WiFi on their cameras.

Another great video Jayson. So I've got my wifi now connected to my computer and my iPhone, however, I tried to connect to the cloud using the cloud Icon to try to use the Canon Camera Connect. The setup goes fine until I get to a screen where it asks me to enter my email so that it can send me a code to enter to finish the process. I enter my email and no code ever shows up. Are you going to cover this in another video or am I doing something wrong? I appreciate all of these videos very much.

I'm on the fence on that one. I don't use Canon's cloud service, but I also feel like I should if only to cover all of the wireless capabilities as well. For the moment, I'm looking into it but there seems to be a lot to cover too.

@@PointsInFocus I had that hooked up at one point but it was so slow I gave up on it. I thought I’d try it again at the different GHz and see if it might work better. Thanks again for all your help. This has been very useful.

@@PointsInFocus Well, I got it hooked up but it's still worthless. I got my camera hooked to my home Wi-Fi, which is 1.2 gigabits, sent the images to image.canon, which I connected to Google Photos and linked to Lightroom on my computer. It has the potential to be amazing, however, it still takes about five minutes per compressed RAW file. At that rate I don't think I'll live long enough to see one burst of 45 MP photos transferred over. I tried... Thanks for all you help and excellent videos.

Unfortunately, I think the short of it is that the R5's networking is borderline broken. I saw much better performance than that on 2.4 GHz (ch 1-11) on my network, but if you're sending to Canon then your speeds are also going to depend on your ISP's upload speed, Canon's available bandwidth, and what not. What remains to be seen is whether this can be fixed in a firmware update (maybe something low level is misconfigured) or if it's just a product of the camera's design. At least one commenter has noted that they saw a performance drop when they upgraded their camera's firmware. Either way, it seems like Canon has really dropped the ball here.

I'm using the M5 and can't use another access point in the camera. Absolutely refuses to detect my network even with WPS. Strange thing is it will work rarely but for the most part it won't work. Problem for me is connecting to the Canon network has a lot of frequent disconnections, whereas I don't have that problem if i connect to my home Wi-Fi. This is theough the Canon app on my android too. Updated all firmware on camera, router and updated app. Tried to reset everything. Just can't get it to work 😓

Sorry for the long delay on replying. I don't have any experience with using the M5 on WiFi. Unfortunately, each of Canon's cameras are different enough that I'm not sure what could be the cause of your problem. Moreover, you've already done everything that I'd recommend for troubleshooting. That said, one question: When you refer to the Canon network, are you talking about the WiFi network the camera will create so you can connect to it from your phone, or Canon's Image Gateway/Image.Canon service for uploading pictures?

appreciate this video but i've been able to my eos r6 to connnect for about a minute once to stream some images into canon web cam utility on Mac OS 12.5. but never again. i've tried for hours now with restarting the camera, resetting wifi, i'll get it connected, but nothing will show in the app. i bought this super expensive camera particularly for this feature and apparently it just doesn't work unless one is somehow lucky. i'd highly recommend anyone considering this camera for streaming to avoid it like the plague unless you want to spend hours and hours repeating instructions and not getting anywhere. :(
@PointsInFocus

I'm sorry to here that. Especially since the wireless streaming is a paid feature in the EOS webcam software and as a result should absolutely work. Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with the new EOS Webcam Utility pro 2.0 software, and therefore the wireless streaming. Canon released this shortly after I had completed my series of videos looking at the R5's network capabilities. The only advice I can offer is to verify that the EOS webcam utility and camera work when the camera is connected to your computer with a USB cable. If that works, then I'd check to see if you can do remove live view shooting using the EOS Utility. You may also have to disable stealth mode and add an exception for the EOS Webcam Utility in your Mac's firewall settings (search for firewall in the system settings).

Canon camera bodies are notoriously horribly slow when transferring images wirelessly, almost to the point of unusable. Like the old (real) photography days, be prepared to remove your memory card and copy your images that way, unless you don't value your time.

Are you on a Mac or PC? Assuming a mac, since that's where I've had more problems. I just checked on my M1 MBP running Sonoma 14.2. I have both EOS Utility.app and EOS Utility 3.app in the program list and set to allow incoming connections. Make sure both are allowed, as i think both are used at some point in the process.
