It’s a hiking thing Mark rather than a general directions thing. I think it’s that they always like to encourage you so they always tell you it’s not far but I think most Westerners would rather hear the truth when they ask. It’s the same with Chinese culture where they won’t tell you if they are not happy with something and you have to wait until later to find out yourself. Cheers

I tell you what David, I really felt it on the way down. Because of the terrain you can't relax for a second so no going into auto-pilot mode. As I said in the video I had often viewed Khao Iko with awe and once even enquired about a route up a few years ago only to be told there wasn't one (which was a common response at the time)

@@karlsthailand it’s a super find and will now be my go to hike from BKK. Yes the descent must be far more dangerous and like you say no real reprieve when on the move… brutal! This hike is exactly what I would like to do often as a training alternative to a Stairmaster, or Stair climber routine in a typical gym. Talk about Zone 2 cardio, VO2 max, and lactate tolerance! This is superb. I am not sure I would disturb the water bottles in the shrine however, because the spirits that reside in the abode may be upset, unless another form of offering was given, or permission was granted by them. What are your feelings on the spirits that you encounter on your treks? It seems so far that they welcome you. Cheers mate.
@karlsthailand

Thanks Marc. I never actually took any of the water but in all honesty I wouldn’t have hesitated if I had needed to. I do understand the principle of them being offered as Buddhist gifts but feel sure that nobody would take offence if the offerings were used by others in a serious situation. It’s a tough hike up and for me going down was even harder. Cheers

cheers to you and brian on this latest monumental accomplishment. your comment about the old structure makes me wonder why there is no plaque or sign describing history of early climbers. maybe because it is not a national park? i would be willing to contribute financial resources to get a marker up there. but in no way would the offer mean you’d have to return to the top to display it.

Donald. There are so many places like this in Thailand. I think the Thai/ Buddhist outlook is that helping to make these monuments is an act of บุญ (merit), the rewards of which come when the person is reborn. Plus they probably have no idea who created it or participated presumably a long time ago. I’d be happy to return there some day
