I like the fact, at least I think it's that way, that there are no supernatural stuff, no monsters, all those enemies are human, like player. It's just that war is a horror and enemies can appear like monsters, because of dehumanization, so it would be easier for soldiers to kill. And like in the example of christmas truce, as soon as humanity is restored in soldiers, they are not that eager to come back to fighting.

@BloodRedFox2008

Interestingly it wasn’t always that way. Much earlier alpha builds from like four years ago showed the game was going to have a bit of a supernatural slant with what appeared to be mutant soldiers. I think the dev eventually realized that just the simple fact it’s set during WW1 would be enough to make for a compelling, grounded survival horror that doesn’t need the supernatural to be scary.
@johncarl5505

The horror kinda goes away when you got one guy running and gunning while eliminating multiple soldiers like he's WW1 Rambo.

This is a true survival horror, but there's no zombies or demons or other unspeakable horrors from beyond: just mud, blood, water, gunpowder and faceless enemy soldiers looking to cave your head in with trench shovels or blast it off with a rifle. The British had the Somme in WW1, and the French had Verdun: a meat grinder with tens of thousands on each side and a constant back and forth over the old forts that lay there. The game really nails that muddy, claustophobic nature of trench warfare, and even shows the clunkiness of old survival horror combat with rifles and shotguns that need to reloaded frequently and having to take care with your aiming. Also, I like that when you leave the big trench fight in chapter 1 you're asked if you wish to abandon your post: something the authorities wouldn't look kindly on. In fact, it got so bad in the French army later on with them forcing their troops into battles they had no chance of winning there were mass mutinies.
@rando5638
Ай бұрын
Your last point reminds me of the ending of Valiant Hearts _(spoilers below, on the off-chance that someone cares despite the fact that the game's been out for donkey's years)._ Emile's story ends with a brutal push through enemy territory driven by a political officer who is forcing his men to fight an unwinnable battle because he genuinely thinks that if he throws enough bodies into the metaphorical meat-grinder the Germans have waiting for them it will eventually jam. The chapter eventually ends when Emile bashes said officer over the back of the head with a shovel when he tries to force the men in front of him into a guaranteed death sentence _(in gameplay terms, you're about to walk into multiple machine-gun volleys that cover each other while they reload, unlike the lone nests you've been able to dodge when they pause fire all chapter)._ Unfortunately, the blow ends up being fatal and Emile meets his end by firing squad despite saving everyone else in his platoon that day. Just because the mutiny was logical AND the moral thing to do doesn't mean your commanding officers give a shit. I'm aware that Andre's optional desertions are borne more out of cowardice _(at least when facing concentrated German pushes during the hold-the-line sequences - most players will kill more than their fair share of relatively-isolated trench raiders during the course of the game)_ than facing truly hopeless odds, but the point that deserters often have perfectly sound reason for taking the courses of action that they do still stands.

For every soldier on the front 3-4 more are needed for the logistics alone Not to mention workers and truckers creating and moving supplies. So most military personal wont see battle if they are lucky The game hints at it in the barrack, most of 28 and up are Reserves, those under are Active. Either by rotation or the need to put manpower to the front, so they cant risk veterans but do so with newbies, is their "trial by fire". Following the current war in Ukraine give a lot of perspective of modern battles but also military activity in real action and how Reality CLASHES with expectation, training, and even Law.

There isn't many good World War 1 related games out there (to be honest the only one that popped up on my mind right now is Battlefield 1), so watching this game is a nice and pleasant surprise for me. Absolutely nailed the horror aspect in my opinion, trench warfare on its own is already a living nightmare, and it is depicted well. Still, I'd love to see a more massive scale battle (it is the battle of Verdun that we are talking about, with more than 700000 casualties in 10 months), with the AI a bit more "intelligent" and behave like real trench raiders back then. Seeing rifleman reaching close range to shoot, or enemies can't hear you breaking stuff a few steps away is kinda bugging me a bit you know. Thank you for covering this game, can't wait for the next chapters to be released. Also, quick question, is the rat attack a scripted event, or if you manage to destroy all rat holes then they won't show up anymore?
