I had 2 very large mandibular tori's removed by a oral surgeon yesterday under sedation which I would recommend. The skin on my pallet floor was peeled back to remove them both .My tongue now has room to swallow correctly. I have been compensating for years to talk like I didn't have two large marbles under my tongue. I am so grateful to have it out of my mouth. There are no nerves in the bone so it was just the skin that was sore . Sutures are tied in front of my teeth not to aeriated by my tongue. Today pain is not that bad and am not taking anything for pain either. I paid 3K out of pocket to have it done and it was well worth it . I hope this helps someone who needs this taken care of

Hi, I'm having 2 very large mandibular tori's removed in September. I've been very nervous about it. It is affecting my speech they have gotten so large and I have sleep apnea because my tongue has no where to rest except in the back of my throat. I will be under sedation. I am so relieved to read that the pain wasn't that bad for you. Are there any other words of wisdom you can give? My doctor said 5 days of resting and just watching tv or reading, nothing strenuous. He said maybe two weeks I should be feeling better but could have some splinters work their way to the surface. Did you have this happen? Mine will be done the old fashioned way because they are too large for laser removal. Thanks JS

Your situation is very similar to mine. I'm in my 50's and have had to use cpap for a few years, due in large part I believe, to my very large mandibular tori. I want them gone, and I want the cpap machine gone too, due to so many complications from being force-fed air all night long. I keep putting off scheduling the procedure due to anxiety about it, but I think today is the day. Best of luck with your procedure and I hope you get the relief you're looking for.

I had my very large, lower mandibular tori (external gum line on both sides) removed last Friday. I never had any significant pain (IV sedation used during the procedure), but stopped taking the pain meds Saturday (pm). I did continue to take Ibuprofen and Motrin at the direction of my doctor, to help with any inflammation before my stitches are removed this Friday. If I had known it would have been this uneventful, I would have done it years ago.

I had multiple bone spurs that I had to get removed after my Tori removal it was rough. If you have a choice to get it all at once DO IT. I can handle pain really well and I felt it I'm just being honest. Motrin 800 mg with two Tylenol ES it works great. Tori removal is scary but it's worth it.

I’ve had a large one on the roof of my mouth my entire life. Over the years it has become very large and I’ve developed a large mandibular as well. It’s nearly impossible to comfortably rest my tongue anymore. Only way for me to stop fidgeting my mouth is if I suck my tongue in place and tense certain muscles but I am afraid that will cause problems. I’ve been noticing more and more recently that I’m always biting/scraping my tongue and even inside of my cheeks. I’m also having trouble breathing through my nose freely at night without nasal strips. Could these things be connected to my Tori?

I had work done on both sides of my mouth towards the front & also a nip in the skin under my tongue as the doctor said I had a tongue tie. The operation took just over an hour. When the anaesthetic started to wear off, my mouth & bottom teeth were throbbing. I was given some meds to take for five days. Tomorrow is my last day. I honestly don't think I can cope without them. I have left a message at the hospital & someone should get back to me. I have seen beautiful examples of a surgeons work before & after tori removal. It makes such a difference. Lupus and other auto immune disease has affected my jaw and ability to open wide. It’s so bad with the tori just getting dental X-rays is horribly difficult. The other issue is that I’ve had many surgeries, and because of my tori, intubation is beyond difficult and has to be done fiber optically. I do wonder if life would be easier without it. Years ago, it got sore and two different times a very thin piece of bone much like a popcorn hull came out. It then healed and I haven’t had any further issues with it opening. Hi- I had a dentist pull my wisdom tooth when it should have been surgically removed. It damaged my sinus severely. I ended up hospitalized with several surgeries. This was 34 years ago. Needless to say, the trauma caused me not to seek proper dental care thereafter. I am paying dearly for this trauma now that I am older. I have a massive tori in the roof of my mouth that is staring to restrict my speech, nutrition and sometimes airway when it is inflamed from an injury. Where are you. Can you please fix me?😢😢😢

Each patient is different it could be the anatomy of the patient... thin gums and high turnover of bone resulting in bone splinters pushing through the gum causing pain and discomfort or the doctor did not perform the procedure well. Typically the major issue behind during any surgical procedure is communication. Doctors need to give patients the pros, cons, and alternatives for the procedure. Patients need to be understanding that surgeries typically go well but also they can come with major issues as well. I say to all the patients: 1. Read your doctors reviews 2. Make sure the doctor explains the procedure 3. If at any time you don't feel comfortable ...FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR!!!

I am on day 2 of BIG lower Tori 4mm from touching and just a small cleanup of one side the jaw bone that sticks in a bit on both sides below the Tori that was bigger then the one side. Day one and now half way through day 2. Going well ".75 to 1" on a 10 scale of pain. The stitch knots are the most annoying thing. I am 59. Doing the Advil/Tylenol 4 hour flip and set my alarm at night to keep on schedule , so I don't have to take the opiates. I have no problem with opiates as I had to use them with kidney stones, you just NEVER take more then proscribed time to take. If I remember every 4 hours, NEVER deviated from that. NEVER. The only problem I have my stitches that are looped over my teeth between the crowns vs videos I saw around the teeth. Lost 1 in the back day 1 and day 2 one in the front 1 more back day 2. Dr said he is ok with that.

Man, doc! As perfect as your teeth look, I'm guessing that it was your high standard of care for your own teeth that led you to be a dentist as opposed to your perfect teeth resulting from the fact that you became a dentist. Great advertising for a dentist. It'd take the blinding white light of the Good Lord, Himself, to get my yellow teeth that white. I'm also thinking about what you said about getting it all done at one time so that you don't have to keep coming back. However, I have so many and such extensive exostoses in my mouth that it looks like the top of a Klingon's head. If I had all those removed at once, I'd probably bleed to death or die from the post op pain. Anyway, happy holidays and blessings to you and yours!

I have been referred to have two moderate lower and a large central upper tori removed as well as what is left of remaining teeth, as it is being done by my local public hospital they have recommended removing all 4 unerupted wisdom teeth at same time, all under general anaesthetic in preparation for dentures. And follow up several months later after healing for traditional dentures (no immediate), there will be a lower cost due to low income but no option for implants. Very anxious about the pain mgmt, Drs here in NZ are much more cautious about prescribing re drug seeking, and have uncommon acetaminophen (we call it paracetamol) allergy. Had only 6 out recently and didn't cope well, I'm no stranger to pain with UC & now ileostomy but this worries me more!

@@jaredwdds6884I so wish I could have but I live in New Zealand! Coming up to 4 weeks post-op now, it was brutal. 😥 3.5hrs in hospital theatre under GA (public hospital), full clearance of 17 teeth incl 4 unerrupted 3rd molars, bone removal on 11 teeth noted on discharge report, palatal tori and and one side mandibular as well. Double anticipated surgery duration. I wasn't fully awake but told after they needed to give me 2 x ketamine plus tramadol in 1st stage recovery to get pain manageable as I came out of it. Was discharged 3hrs post-op from second stage recover as soon as I could empty bladder and drink fluids from day surgery unit at 9.30pm still numbed with local anaesthetic. Recovery nurses told to advise me I couldn't take anything overnight at home for pain until following morning due to amounts req in theatre. Was absolutely horrendous by 8am the next morning obviously and scrambled to get urgent appt with my family Dr for help, 9/10 on scale. Oral surgeon prescribed just 200-400mg ibuprofen only (Just 1 or 2 tablets std OTC strength) via recovery nurses as I didn't see them post-op or any other Dr/Surgeon before discharged, they knew of allergy to Tylenol and I was concerned about pain. Had been in a lot before hand w a fractured root on a 2nd molar. Will be healing slowly and hoping the exposed thumbnail sized ulcer on palate that opened thru to bone after stitches dissolved will slowly close on its own before first appt with Denturist in 3 month time. Anything other than extremely soft/puree food feels like it's rubbing on it, no cold foods now either, very sensitive to that currently on that spot, no more ice 😂

In regards to the Tylenol/Advil pain treatment, I can attest that it does work. Slightly off topic, but I had a screw placed in my shoulder socket after I broke my socket and dislocated the shoulder in the process. My surgeon also prescribed the Tylenol/Advil combo and I thought he was nuts. It worked. First time I was virtually pain free since it broke. Slight pain, but very tolerable. @@Jas_01101 My surgery took 90 minutes. The oral surgeon thought it would be 45 minutes but it ended up being twice as long as he thought. That was removal of both lower left and lower right tori. The cost was $2200, but I only had to pay $400. Insurance covered the rest. I had a liquid diet for 2 weeks, and then soft foods for 2 more. I did use pain meds for about 4 days and then switched to advil/Tylenol. I wouldn’t have been able to work for 2 weeks if I didn’t have the time off. My surgery was July 11th and I’m still not cleared to eat everything. Dr still says no chips, pretzels, crusty bread or any really crunchy foods. I’m still careful about what i eat. I really didn’t expect recovery to be this long because I had my upper tori removed and that was a week. It was completely worth it though. If they grow back, I’ll have it done again.

Even after mentally preparing myself, my experience has unfortunately been worse than I expected. I'd say I have an at least average or slightly above average pain tolerance, and this has been worse for me than 2 other general anesthesia surgeries I've had in the past. My surgery was 5 days ago (now post-op day 4) and I had 2 large mandibular tori (each side under the tongue) as well as multiple large ones removed in each outer quadrant of my gums (exostosis). So in all, there were 6 areas they worked on with large amounts of bone removed at each area. I needed be under general anesthesia where they used a nasal tube to intubate me. Aside from a sore throat and a ton of pain, swelling, and tenderness at the surgery sites (my entire face is swollen up), my tongue seems to have gotten injured/scraped up in the process with swelling, teeth marks indented into the sides, and a diminished sense of taste. There's also a very sharp and hard white protrusion stabbing at the base of my tongue on one side, which I assume is a remnant of a bone fragment. It feels like a razor blade cutting into and scraping the base/side of my tongue, it's causing immense pain unrelieved by tylenol/Advil, and it's making it impossible for me to progress past a liquid diet as it's constantly stabbing me, especially when swallowing or trying to speak/eat. I'm thinking it's a piece that will probably need to be removed or smoothed down. Called the MD about this yesterday but since it's the weekend I did not receive a response. The tissue in my mouth is so tender and the tightness in my jaw makes it extremely difficult to open enough just to eat. The tightness extends past my cheeks and goes all the way up to my temples. I'm still on a liquid diet as I'm unable to advance and getting enough calories and nutrition is extremely challenging-- been feeling really lethargic and weak. I can talk with difficulty, and can't really smile or laugh yet. It's been challenging trying to keep my mouth clean. I often rinse with warm salt water, and try to gently brush areas I can reach (which isn't much as I can barely open wide), but everywhere you look there's just a ton of white gum tissue and sutures. This recovery has been extremely grueling and I'm really praying that things start to feel better soon. Hoping anyone who also had a difficult/painful recovery can share their updates to give me some inspiration on getting through this.
