The 'mature enough to have children' thing is such a crazy double standard. When I was pursuing sterilisation a few years ago, I was asked to justify why I wanted it, reminded that it was irreversible and assured that I would almost certainly change my mind and regret it. I was 27 and had known I didn't want kids since I was 8. Nobody would ever ask a 27 year old seeking fertility advice to justify why they want kids, we don't remind them that it's irreversible in terms of the damage pregnancy does to a body and in the emotional impact on a child. And people do change their mind. Parents walk out, they neglect their children, they abandon them. The existence of CPS just proves that there's not always a happy ending on that side of the fence. I really don't understand the obsession with getting people pregnant.

Agreed. No one is mature enough to have children unless they're fully aware of the challenges they'll face when it comes to parenting. And they also must be mature enough to accept how their kid will turn out. Whether their child has a disability or they turn out to not be cis or het (or both), parents must be willing to love their child unconditionally through thick and thin. If you can do that, then you're mature enough to take care of children. And even then, that doesn't mean you'd want to have children! Having children is a choice, not a requirement. As a Christian who'd want to adopt at most and not have biological children, I'll never get the obsession with the notion that pursuing pregnancy and children should be a life goal everyone is expected to achieve.

And of course, there’s an additional huge bag of worms regarding how effective CPS actually is, or if they have the right incentives. (Wink wink, nudge nudge, that’s a no. They have a quota for the number of people they send into foster care (and adoption, but don’t quote me on the adoption half). That isn’t exactly what you want to hear for an agency that should take everything on a case by case basis.)

The worst part about this situation is that it kills the motivation for a lot of really good teachers. I've had a lot of genuinely good and caring teachers that had to endure a lot, from paycuts to parents complaints. I even renounced to becoming a teacher because my family bullied me out of it because of how low the pay was and how much shit I was going to endure, (Nowadays I'm fine since I got a carrier that satisfies me more than teaching, so dw, they didn't kill my true dream). @Tara Allen They really do care more about the fictional "what if" imaginary person in their minds than the wellbeing of the woman who already exists. Because us women are just incubators to them, our rights and autonomy aren't important. They don't even actually care about the child as soon as they are born and then don't live up to that fictional character in their head, like turning out autistic, etc. And not only do they not care, they actively abuse and exclude that kid for their whole life. When I turned out as a neurodivergent girl that rejected fitting into the boxes made for me, well, I was treated as a disappointment, and it felt like the world rejected me because I had a mind of my own. F_ck society. And again, I think it really says something that people care more about non-existent people than women. People talk about how "sad" they would be to not exist as if you'd even be able to think that, like, you're only sad about it because you *do* exist, if you didn't exist you simply would not be and you wouldn't think anything. Non-existence is simply a neutral state, a natural law, and people are really werid and weridly emotional about it. We all didn't exist once, trying to fight non-existence is ridiculous and like trying to fight the existence of gravity. These kinds of people also don't understand that not every fetus can be saved, that it's simply part of nature for fetuses to die all the time, yet they go ahead and jail women for miscarriages anyway. It's just so irrational, stupid and illogical, and sexist. And for what? Backwards religious ideology. It's infuriating
@catelynh1020
2 жыл бұрын
@Tara Allen Because it's impossible to tell a medically induced abortion from a natural abortion. Especially the pills, which are just hormones that are produced naturally in the body. Because they can't prove it was an abortion, they just assume it was and do the arrest. Just a quick google search shows it's already been happening. In 2020 a woman went to be treated, her baby died in the hospital, and since she'd done drugs, they jailed her for 4 years for manslaughter of the child she miscarried likely due to genetics or drug use while she was unaware she was pregnant. In 2019, a woman (becker) was in jail for over a year until in 2021 a judge dismissed the case against her, since the stillbirth at 8 months was due to infections, not drug use, and the hospital did tests on her she didn't consent to and assumed drugs had caused the stillbirth. Another woman in the same area (perez) was in jail for 4 years because of the law. Napw tracked cases (according to an (the) guardian article) about this type of thing and found over 1,700 cases against pregnant people led to fetal deaths being considered "crimes" between 1973 and 2 years ago. Now the laws are just getting worse. It's illegal to use the most effective contraception in many places now, illegal to have ivf (in vitro fertilization) since multiple eggs are fertilized but only one child will come from it, miscarriages are basically illegal if anyone thinks anything is suspicious... based on existing cases, if you drink or do drugs without knowing you're pregnant and lose the fetus because of it, you can very well be thrown in jail.

Planned parenthood.... just think about the name and wonder why people think they only do abortions. I'm pretty sure even in planned parenthood they make sure you're not being coerced and are completely certain you want to go through with an abortion! I'm looking through their website and so much of it is about destigmatizing sex, a lot about sexual and gender identity, cancer, and healthy relationships. Only 3/20 tabs include contraception or abortion. In pregnancy they have so much on prenatal care, knowing if you're pregnant or infertile, considering parenthood or adoption, how to feed a newborn, and even postpartum depression! Not an American, but I'm pretty sure we also learnt about more than just XX and XY in gymnasium (high school or A levels, I guess; 16-18 year olds), and transgender, intersex people (and many other differences in genetics) for example. It has always been a confusing argument for me because uhh...basic biology also explained transgender people pretty well, did it not in America??? Like sure, maybe it was somewhat surface level on some things, and perhaps outdated on other things since those were more than a decade old, so how come current education is so bad in the US? 🤣

Ask them how well maintained roads were. Ask them how much money they made compared to their expenses (income-to-rent ratio went from 4:1 to almost 2:1 in the last 3p years). Another thing to add about the whole teachers thing here in the US... Often times they need to buy the supplies their students need with their OWN money, so not only are they getting fuck all paid, but the teachers have to spend what little they have on their job or risk not doing their job well enough. I had a 9th grade English teacher who bought all the pencils, dry erase markers, paper, and so many other supplies for the students, had a second job in retail along with it, and had kids with behavioral issues who would break the stuff that SHE paid for despite being told numerous times that she had to pay for them, not the school. She was such a lovely person who calmly and discreetly talked to me about my low grades and did her best to help me get them up (It didn't work: Horray mental health and memory issues that made it so I couldn't remember to do my homework- despite the fact that it didn't work for me, I really appreciate the effort she took on me with helping me. I was great on tests getting nearly straight A+'s, but homework screwed me over because I always forgot to do it.) Teachers deserve WAY more money. They deal with so much, get the butt end of cost cuts, and do such an amazing thing so long as they actually care about their job: Which they would care a lot more about if they were PAID MORE

Taking the topic of genes, I actually just read an article this morning about how there's this really rare genetic disorder that they can cure with gene therapy now. But the treatment has a very interesting side effect: it often changes the patient's hair color. It turns out that the gene those people are missing is one of the genes responsible for the production of brown/black melanin in the hair. So white people with this defect are typically pale blonde, or at least significantly lighter than others in their family. But once the treatment starts working they have the correct version of the gene, and so their hair darkens to the shade it would have been if they hadn't had the genetic problem.

You are so right. Went I started working at 14 making "minimum wage" of 2.65/ hour I was able to afford to buy a brand new truck my first year of working. To do that today, minimum wage would need to be about 25/Hour. One thing people do not seem to understand is why we have minimum wages. The reason is because the "free market" is not actually a "Free Market", Labor is Forced to work or Starve. That is Forced Labor=Slavery. The "free Market" values slaves at zero. Because of this our ancestors had to fight to get paid enough to survive. They protested and got the "band aid" of a minimum wage. However over time The Capitalist lobbied to keep the minimum wages as low as possible, which now is not enough to survive on. The real solution is to make our Markets work properly by removing the "Forced to work" aspect of Labor. By providing a Basic Income we can make work by choice allowing the market to accurately value our labor. This changes the whole employer/employee relationship. This would make employers truly value the employees. This would end the abuse of employees.

They should be called “pro-birth” or “pro-future labor” because that is all they see children as; a way to control women through families and as future wage slaves.

I literally get paid 11.50 an hour and I have 1-4 coworkers helping me clean up an entire parking lot of a popular grocery store's worth of carts. A lot of us get paid similar because it's a basic job and most of us are minors. I'm not even sure how they decided my pay because a guy who is the same age as me and started literally the same day is getting 11.55

tej minimum wage problem in US is very weird to my bc even in my fcked up country minimum wage rises as the money looses it’s worth, it’s gradual and natural and I do not see what problem do they have

It is an attitude borne out of wanting to “work hard to earn your keep” and also simultaneously using that as a way to hoard more money, so as to further gaslight workers into believing in the dream knowing they are “working hard” but in actuality are chasing a receding, evanescent goal.

Here in BC, we tied the minimum wage to inflation. We’re also switching back to card checking union certification (rather than mandatory secret ballot voting) so that will make organizing easier. I’ve been mad at both the provincial and federal NDP for a while, but I think I should remember to be grateful sometimes

I discovered a channel called “The Babylon Bee”, which is a right-wing sarcastic type of account, and they make transphobic videos and such. They have a video called “Spelling Bee Contestant Asks the Definition of ‘Woman’”, which reminds me so much of Matt Walsh’s documentary, “What is a Woman”. If you want to, I think it’d be an interesting topic to cover some time!

it confuses me too don’t worry 😭 i grew up with an english dad (also with a weird accent), american media, and then moving to the u.k. and living with my english family so it’s very messy hahaha i’ve also adapted it slightly from doing videos because people were having a hard time with the way i pronounced some words so i articulate very strongly for a kiwi accent (which typically misses out syllables / is slurred/mumbled)
