As someone else commented, I can’t imagine how amazing it must be, as an adult, to work on a piece of art that was so impactful on you as a child. I have to say that he did an amazing job. It didn’t look right before. Proportions were off. It wasn’t historically accurate. It wasn’t representative of Degas. Now it is all of the above. Perfect color and fabric choice. Couldn’t be better.

I wrote a paper on la petite danseuse de quatorze ans when I was 14. We were supposed to be given an artist by our teacher and write about their work. I remembered being 5 and watching a documentary on, among others, Degas with my grandma and I requested him as my artist. I was the only one who requested someone hahaha. I poured my little heart into that paper and I was the only one who got a top grade. In my research process I fell in love with la petite danseuse de quatorze ans and I had to struggle not to make my paper into just a fangirl page. I remember reading that the owners of the sculptures were responsible for her tutu and I was really curious as to how why anyone needed to be responsible. Thank you so much for this video and for showing me why! I'm 18 now and my goal is to see any of the bronze sculptures of her before I turn 20!

I think the history of the sculpture itself has the skirt being changed about every 20 years. So it comes to a point where the current skirt is so degraded and not longer lends itself to the sculpture itself it needs to be replaced to be viewed properly, or may begin to take away from the piece as a whole. The original skirt is preserved if they museum ever decides to have the original put back on.
@AsAboveISoBelow

He may even have a group he talks with beforehand, and it's pretty obvious he's doing/done research on how it should look. I think he did a great job as well, you can tell the sculpture was designed for a fuller skirt like the one he added, as the top piece stuck out too far over the skirt that was started with.

Huge improvement. The angle the skirt flares out from the stiff fullness, matchs with the angle from not only the small section of the dress below the waist above it, but the pointed leg below. It looks so right. In comparison, the previous tutu looked like a limp dirty bell, and I'm sure less true to the artist's original vision.

I like the new skirt but suddenly when people look at the sculpture without knowing that the skirt is a new one and was only made to look like an old one...i just thought it would be better to make a new looking one and let time do her thing and not hiding anything....I would rather see the skirt new and not match to the old statue than match it but it's only a camouflage...just my opinion. because I just notice that some artwork that have gone through conservation you didn't know which is part is real or only a camouflage...I just want to have it real..unmatch but real or old looking but actually it's not I'm.sorry I'm not a hater just my opinion.

Mr Peterson has done an exemplary piece of work, but I feel a sadness that a change should have been made, because the little girl is a figure of the past, an expression of her brave little life, and a time now long gone. I thought her tutu in its worn state was a beautiful example of this.

as an art history student who is currently taking a course in restoration and conservation of art i somehow feel uneasy seeing this since too me it is just imitating something that the sculpture has never been. despite being somehow a copy of a wax sculpture from degas, the later ones are bronze cast of this perticular sculpture. which to me means, these sculptures have a own history and are not original. when a sculpture is made in 1922 then the artist who did it had their own twist to it, even with choosing the skirt. therefore i find it wrong trying to make it a degar, rather than just accepting its history and restore the skirt that was already on the sculpture. the sculpture was transferred into its "perfect way", rather then conserve its history and therefore conserve the skirt from the 80's. seems to be an american thing, even my tutor of the course says so, that americans conserve different to us germans. but as i am not a professional i could be wrong on that aswell.

I don't understand conservation sometimes. It's not about now, it's about then. Surely the whole point is that she lived and was captured at a certain time, and that the deteriorated tutu tells us the model has now long gone, and that is the point: we live and we die. This should be a memento mori of a life.
