We are a few days into the first Better Riding Quest, and I am thinking a lot about learning.
There are many ways we learn, some ways stronger for one person than another.
It is one reason where traditional riding lessons can be lacking.
Learning only by hearing instructions is pretty weak by itself.
Most of us learn more quickly if we can see (visual), and do and feel (kinesthetic).
Emotion makes a memory stronger.
This is why fear learning is so powerful. For us and for our horses. It is an important feature for survival, but frustrating to unwind when we want to go out and do fun things again.
For today's newsletter, I pulled a few resources from the archives for you.
First, is a "not new, but never published" video that I did on learning through immersions versus learning through consistency.
It's a powerful concept for riders and one of the reasons I started making videos over 14 years for my in person riding students. I wanted them to have exercises to practice between weekly lessons to keep the consistency.
Immersions are also powerful because they typically involve stronger emotions, new and different places, and more mental "blank space" for learning.
