I would like to add on the "increasing your salary" question. To some extent, I disagree with always looking for a job elsewhere. I would suggest increasing your skills whilst you're working where you are. Once some companies see that you job-hop a lot, they start wondering why you're constantly changing jobs; things like always coming in late, drinking on the job, problem with authority (I personally don't like being pushed around), etc. So unless you're working in an environment where it's highly toxic and your goals nolonger align with your employer, it's always better to learn more, increase your skillsets whilst you're where you are. And make yourself valuable. Add value to the company. You'll be surprised how some employers appreciate that. I worked for a company that would surprisingly increase my salary, even by small figures, but they would tell you why and it would motivate me to add more.

Love your content NM !!! been following your YT since my 2nd year, I graduated in April this year & was fortunate enough to be absorbed by a QS Consultancy firm here in Gaborone, Botswana .All I can say is that in Uni we literally only scratched the surface & the shift from school to workplace was quite a challenge in the first 2 months, however I realized that ASKING alot of questions (even to other project team members (Arch,Eng,PM) helps alot. I can relate to the differences between Consulting & Contracting ( my dad happens to be a contractor ) , I've witnessed the constant battle between Client/Consultant QS (whose trying best to keep project within budget) & Contractors QS (whose trying best to maxmize on profits & Variations) 🤣

I have a very valid question. Why do consultancies worry about students work experience during undergrad so much? I have civ work to make up my prac hours during my undergrad as I couldnt find work in consultancies. What doesn't make sense is that the big institution like UCT train students to fulfill the consultancy QS role, but certain companies are so fixed on the prac hours and what you did.

Does QS enable you to travel at your level or you have other income streams to finance your travel?
