This is one of my favorite opening sequences in all of film. I love how it represents the noise bubble that surrounds our planet and how that bubble eventually fades to a profound silence. Leaving the us to contemplate the vastness of the universe. How easy it would be, to simply lose track of our home planet if humanity ever ventures beyond our solar system. However, what is most remarkable is that humanity exists at all and is able to contemplate the universe and it's place in it.

For all teachers out there, this is a great resource to start students on relative sizes and distances lessons in astronomy unit. They will be amazed at how insignificant at the size of earth in comparison with other planets and stars. Students will come in thinking that planets and stars are smaller and not that far away. What we can see with the naked eye or telescope isn't that far away from them. So great way to introduce the topic

i agree. we shouldn't be thinking much about timing in this intro. it's just an intro makes a lot of things easy for everyone to understand. now a beginner could understand that radio signals travels in space. one of the best movie intros ever made.

Awesome!! I'm reminded of a quote from Wernher von Braun, "You must accept one of two basic premises: Either we are alone in the universe, or we are not alone. Either way, the implications are staggering". Multi-cellular life has been around our planet for 1 billion years, so that kind of life is bound to be common. But civilization approx. started with the Sumerians only 5000 years, so that's got to be rarer. How rare, only time will tell...

Surprising how much people are arguing over this clip when the entire point that could be taken away from it is realizing how incredibly small we are in the grand scheme of things. A clip like this can put all of our "opinions" in their proper light - infinitesimal. We are so small. And that can be a good feeling.

That is such an amazing opening. The director and artists did an amazing job on showing how tiny we are and how unimaginably big the galaxy and the universe is. And that we are a part of something far greater than what most people think.

The music is because Earth's transmissions (from TV to radio) are also reaching out into space. So the farther the camera got from Earth the older the transmissions you hear. You hear some of the transmissions reach the other nearby stars, which is important because that basically sets up the entire movie. Its a pretty good movie, it's all up on here on KZitem.

I just finished watching this movie moments ago (after hearing something about it in a David Wilcock video- THE 2012 ENIGMA), and I'm still practically in tears from it! I remember having a dream EXACTLY like this opening scene, the day before I went to Bonnaroo last year (a large music festival held yearly in Manchester, TN - about 20 miles from my house). And the scene later where Jodie takes her "mystical flight" - It seemed to touch on some awesome memory that I can't even put to words...

At the beginning, when we are at the Earth, the music and transmissions are all "current"... As we fall deeper into the depths of space, we find that the radio waves are getting more outdated until we finally come to just radio "fuzz", the very 1st sound from us humans. As time goes on, the radio waves will expand out further into the Universe, and, who knows, maybe someday, someone may pick up on those signals and track them:O) Most EPIC movie intro EVER
