Thanks for a great review! Just want to be nitpicky though and say that 120 and 220 are not "mm" standards. 120 and 220 are the original Kodak model numbers for those formats. 120 and 220 are both 58mm wide.

In concept, the Contax 645 system is the best medium format camera ever made. Looking back from about 6 years after this video, it seems the execution of the concept was flawed, if understandably so. The whole system has acquired a reputation of failing in a wide variety of ways, most relating to its modular design and all electrical control system. It cost (historically), $6-10,000 to get into the system with some lenses. When electrical connections between the parts or internally start to fail, your investment is rising total loss, as the system is not serviced by its maker, there are no new parts, there were never a large volume of sales so used parts are not normally available, and most servicemen will not work on them. If the body fails, the lenses fit no other camera, so their salvage is questionable. Today, many of the accessories which made this system so attractive cannot be found, and if found, are grossly overpriced for the function you get. Conclusion: Shop up the best 645 Bonicia Etrsi you can find with the best (late model) lenses and accessories, then go take some photos. If worried abut repairs, buy a couple of extras. (They cost less than a film back for the Contax. Need 645 auto-focus? Try my Fuji GA series cameras.

Good but you must show some images taken with the camera at the end to make it a great video.

Excellent review, really useful cos I just bought a Contax with a 45 mm lens. Really like the look of the waist level view finder though, but darn it, they are expensive ! Also looking to get the 80 mm lens F2 for this, but again the prices are over £1000 for a mint one. Great review Ben !

It is my favourite camera. I've never had problems with autofocus and while a people complain about battery life, I've not had a problem with it. I don't know why you'd want a waist level finder on a 645, it is useless if you want to shoot portraits. They are for square format cameras. I think they must have made it for die hard studio photographers who shot with Hasselblads. The prism finder is superb in all cases. It is quite easy to use this camera one-handed too. The 80mm f2 lens is magnificent. You should get one.

+jeremy north he explained extensively why and how he uses that waist level finder. To be able to shoot people in a more casual way.

I'm not "good to go" on a slow autofocus camera. I find it hard to believe that anyone would find it advantageous to try to do street photography with a medium format camera. I believe you said being able to be able to autofocus without being noticed was a big advantage. Not, "good to go" on that concept. I love my Contax 35 mm with its fast 35mm & 50mm. The colors, the crisp focus of the Zeiss lenses are totally Killer. That's why I love the combination of Contax body and Zeiss glass. I hate it that Kyocera dropped this line of beautiful cameras.

I'd say with regard to street photography other huge disadvantages are size and weight. Not exactly discrete, even using the WLF. It's a great camera though, I had one a while back but, for street photography though, kind of the opposite to I use.
