I find the problem with people doing content creation is lack of strategy. They come up with ideas and upload them and post them straight away. They may be motivated for a couple months and may upload 40 videos in that time. 40 videos could be 40 or 20 weeks instead of 2/3 months. Batch and post consistently (I also recommend using a bit of Famester as it helps a lot). Don't post everything straight away, post it on the same day/time every week. This also helps avoid burn out...

I’ve always said it’s easy to build your own prison as an entrepreneur or professional creative. A decade ago I started a design agency and eventually was managing a team of twelve but was no longer designing and I started having panic attacks. After three ER visits in two years I sold the business and started making videos as a new creative outlet. Now I’m a full-time video editor and have to remind myself to keep a balance and not build another prison cell out of my creative work. It’s all about balance, setting boundaries, and not falling for the trap of bigger and more at all costs. Like you say, we can find our creative spark again by returning to our creative source, our “why”. ❤

In psychology there are studies about “intrinsic and extrinsic motivation”. Basically, what was found was that when the motivation was purely intrinsic (I.e. the reward was the activity itself), the output was best. Yet, when an extrinsic motivation was involved (I.e. money), the output started to dwindle and people reported being less happy with the activity. Essentially, what you’re saying is backed by science. 👍🏻

After 2 years on the hamster wheel and feeling endlessly slighted by the attention economy, my joy for it has depleted and been replaced with that SAME monotonous, resentful, pressurized feeling that led me to desperately try to escape my 9-5. It makes me sad because I didn’t know this could happen to this degree. I used to bring so much of myself into my content and be excited all throughout the creation process. now my creation structure is all about what can be produced as fast as possible, on the pulse of whatever the current trends are, and will “perform” well. That’s not a creative process. That’s your ordinary, assembly line, deadline impending, soul sucking job. First off...you're so beautiful! 💕 But honestly, something I've noticed over the years is that whether someone is a celebrity, guru, author, content creator, etc...quality always matters over quantity. Fans, followers, supporters, etc will literally wait patiently and check back incessantly as these individuals take time to themselves and then come back with "quality" content. People are STILL asking Rihanna to make music and have a tour. When was the last time she did anything consistent with music? People simply love her energy and want it however they can get it and will WAIT for it lol...artists like Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole do not push their music like other mainstream artists and we are always pleasantly satisfied when they finally release their thoughtfully crafted content. A KZitemr by the name of Erica Fae has gone through ups and downs ever since she was diagnosed with Lyme disease and now has been fighting cancer. To this day many of us still follow her on social and KZitem although we know we won't see/hear from her for months to years and are right there STILL supporting her after every long ass hiatus because we're connected to her journey. Your people will NEVER forget you! However...businesses, artists, and creators that focus on quantity over quality do not create authentic connection to their "fanbase" or customers and people use their content or products as a means to escape vs a means to connect. So they're easily forgotten and tossed aside because they never "connected"...

Teachers suffer from this too. Students are used to getting a quick fix, so when we "take too long" to create an outcome they get "bored". I feel like an actor who performs commercials all day, because I can only keep their attention for a few minutes at a time. They can't even sit through a movie anymore, so I stopped showing them. If they have to wait for anything, they get visibly upset. I now show 20-minute videos, if they can pay that much attention and time on something. Even those short videos, I need to stop to keep their attention. It is draining me physically and emotionally, to the point that I am losing my passion too. I never thought I would say such a thing. It is a miracle my students learn anything at all, in this kind of environment.

@@authorreneedang Great question. I always recommend that creators should have some product or service that they sell. Some things are natural as a result of the type of content you are creating. For example, I see you are an author so there is book sales, you may also be able to sell your services to help others write a book. Then there are the things that you learn as a result of having to create content like editing, film making, videography, and graphic design, courses and digital products. Then there are brand deals and affiliate income. Never rely on the revenue from your content alone.

I do definitely think there’s pros and cons to being a content creator. But there’s also pros and cons to a standard 9-5 job. I think ultimately, everyone has to work to live and survive, I think everyone should do something they love or something they can at the very least tolerate and not focus on the numbers or money. If someone is wanting to be a content creator, you can’t focus on views, money, numbers etc, or you will lose the joy from it. Life is so short. I say go for it. If it’s something you want to do and something that makes you happy. “we regret the things we didn’t do more than the things we did” ❤

Yeah I feel like I’m not even enjoying making videos wondering when my videos will take off when I just really wanted to encourage , uplift others, and feel creative. I gotta just focus on feeling passion and just letting my channel be my diary. I definitely feel like I’ve been killing my joy which makes me feel like I can’t complete anything. This video came at the perfect time. Thank you. I’ve had videos blow up and I love making content that I care about. But there’s also this fear of success. I have goals for my channel in 2024 but I never want to get obsessed about the algorithm and getting sponsorships. It can take away my creative freedom and the joy. I don’t even look at the statistics. I just make what I love and keep improving. A friend asked me if I would leave my day job/school for content creation and I said No. It’s really about finding that perfect balance. And I love being multidimensional. I don’t want all of my identity to be in one thing because it can be gone at any instant. And we are not defined solely by what we do.

Feel this! I burned out for yearssss after chasing the wrong things. Now I’m back and committed to prioritizing the right things. Space to read and think and tap into inspiration. That space is where the best, most authentic stuff comes from. It’s the stuff that (sometimes) gets the best response, too. Biggest thing is to tune out the growth experts because even their marketing makes you feel like a failure if you’re not blowing up overnight. The biggest gift we can give ourselves is following our unique paths and seeing where it takes us.

This year im all about attracting and not chasing. As an author and indie publisher I got caught up in the whole content creating business side of things, but i recently noticed that since I kinda put the promoting part on the back burner I just found out that my books have started getting 5 star reviews! So im just going to focus on just creating as a writer. Everything else will follow.

Indie author here too. So far, I find it easier to make a living when I'm churning and promoting. I wonder if there's a balance between loving the writing part and loving the promotion part. I see some authors on IG who go silent during their writing phase and then hop online when it's time to promote. Maybe that's what we can adopt?

Exactly. Do what you actually love and the money follows. It may sound cliché because we use that phrase a lot, but if we have the VISION for our success/happiness and stay true to it, then the path unravels before our eyes and your connection with the Most High/Creator becomes so strong. Truly resonating with this, I took a break break from creating on YT to pursue TikTok (the ease of pumping out numbers in the Attention economy) and realised I was chasing numbers... and numbers are never ending. Back in the game now with zero fks to give about making numbers - but as humans I feel its natural for these tendencies to creep in, we must keep them at bay. The thing everyone needs to understand that you’re gonna have to work. In life, you are going to have to dedicate time to earning money, that’s just it, the long and short of it. Unless you were born into a family of Wealth and affluence, but even then if you aren’t working, it’s very likely you will find no purpose in your own life, and end up worse off mentally and emotionally. Just accept that you have to work
@knot_kisses
2 ай бұрын
Nope, I wouldn't end up worse off mentally. The reason why work sucks is because we're worried about bills. If you didn't have to worry about bills, say you come from a wealthy family or live in a country with good systems, that doesn't mean you won't want to work or you won't have a purpose. You'd find sth to do of course but without the pressure of making money to pay bills and that would be a very peaceful life
@tomagray1811
2 ай бұрын
@@knot_kisses if you spun a few years learning and honing an economically viable skill (relevant degree, trade, service, etc) and spun a few more years growing your professional acumen, trust me, you would be not worried about paying bills, and have plenty of disposable money….. so long as you weren’t living way beyond your means
@@tomagray1811 the purpose of life is just to exist. You won't become worse off if you just exist lol. You'll probably have the best mental health. Existing doesn't mean just laying around in bed. Do you think when you retire you'll just be sitting on the couch n laying in bed? You'll always be inclined to do sth. You'll now have the freedom to learn that skill you've always wanted to know because you love it n not because you want to make money from it. You'll probably learn many skills, you'll suck at some, be good at some but there's no pressure now. The only people who have this luxury before they retire, are children born from affluent countries, people from countries with good systems or sb married to an affluent man. Not having to work, meaning you come from money, gives you so many opportunities

I make artwork, post it and then run! i do go back to my post and look at the views, likes or even if I've had a comment after a few days. I have to preserve my sanity. I can't pour my heart and soul and uncounted hours into creating only to have it be a non even on social media. Fortunately I have a job that pays my bill and not have to depend on selling my art work. I tried it, I hated it. I work-create for me and I get to evolve as a better artist all the while. Having input or approval from others who create is important but I refuse to let it own me. Be true to you beyond all else.

These are the exact thoughts I've been having this last year or two. People will continue to move into content creation of many varieties... our lives are our brands. We are made to believe we have to keep up with algorithms and push content out daily, consistently. It's draining and who says that's how it has to be? Most people are not sitting around staring at the screen waiting for content to be released. They have other content to absorb and when yours (generally speaking) releases, they'll be there to support it. Too many influencers are demanding that you post an absurd amount consistently or you will not be successful. But you know what? I'm trying something else. I'm recording what feels right along my path and uploading WHEN I HAVE TIME, because I did not give up the mainstream work life 7+ years ago just to fall back into an enslaved system. Technology can be about freedom, we just have to stop falling into mainstream tactics and BE AUTHENTIC.
@abbyblueco

And I'll add that actually, when I DON'T post as frequently, I get MORE views and engagement BECAUSE I don't post as often. I am utilizing that strategy and working on longer content that has a relaxing vibe that people can just put on in the background, and because I don't post as often, it will *always* be shown to people because it's more of a rarity rather than pouring half-assed varieties of the same content just to hit a quota.

I don't like that factory feeling. My desire is to include this platorm in my life, not build my life around it. Your video gave me insight on what is lurking up ahead. Now I can build better systems and routines for myself to protect myself from being caught up in that vortex. Again, thank you.

i really needed to hear this. I found myself in the cycle of 'creating' more to make up for the lack of engagement , in doing that i lost the passion behind making videos. instead of creating what i enjoyed , i was trying to emulate what i thought would get more engagement. it wasn't until i stopped to reflect on my year that i realized i wasn't having fun anymore , and i wasn't proud of what i was putting out. hearing this is giving me the encouragement to take a break + rekindle my passion.

When I began this year (2024), I told myself, "I am Peter Panning it this year! I will hold on to my happy thought so I can fly." Many of us need to have something that reminds us why we started and why we are still doing this. Like the movie Inception: We need our trinket to bring us back to life. There are so many distractions in the creative industry that tend to take us off course and will make us fall and doubt ourselves if we aren't careful. Great video!
