Kendra the Vet Tech (LVT) teaches you how to discern if a drug is a controlled substance or not. Controlled substances should always remain behind a locked cabinet door or in a safe within the hospital and each use must be logged in a log book at the time of use or dispensing to a patient. When orders are being unpacked or if controlled substances are seen sitting around on counter tops of the hospital, knowing how to identify them is the first step in ensuring that they are not misused. A controlled substance is identified with a letter "C" on the label that has a Roman numeral from 2-5 within the letter "C". The "C" is for "controlled" and the Roman numeral signifies how addictive the substance is, with 2 being the most likely to develop addition & 5 being the least. Check out some real life examples of controlled vs non-controlled drug labels so you can be prepared!
