Fairly good video, but as with most, one very important detail was missed. The minimum flame for the burners was missed. When the burner is turned to low, it will actually only go to medium as it is still set for Natural gas. To finish the job, at each burner, turn it to low, then pull each burner knob off the shaft. There is a very small screw inside the shaft, slowly turn it in till a small minimum flame is reached, the flame is still consistent all the way around. To check it, turn the flame to high, quickly turn it to low and the flame will quickly drop in size but not go out. If it does then increase the minimum flame size slightly. Do the rest of the burners and you will have a full range of flame size, instead of just high to medium. If the stove is near open windows or excessive draft from a range hood, the minimum flame may also need to be increased slightly. If your range has a dual burner, the second screw will be near the first. Read the instruction book in this instance. Enjoy the nice small simmer setting when done.

@@pamelamorris8945 When you say it is stuck, are you referring to one of the top burner orifices, or something else? If it is one of the orifices but you can get the others out then make sure the socket you are using is six point not twelve and if it is slightly loose then take one of the extra orifices to a store where they have standard and metric sockets, you do not want it to round off. They all should be about the same tightness when removing.

Watched your video and duplicated it on my new Whirlpool gas range, right down to the blue tape in the socket. Worked like a charm and was as straightforward as the video suggests. Will take anothers advice on thr comments section and pull the knows and adjust the flame screw since my "Low" is still medium flame. Didn't have to shut off gas to the back of the stove to replace nozzles...just so everyone knows. Saved a bunch of money. On a side note. The new stove was supposed to come with the conversion kit....it did not. Called 800 number and it took a week but finally arrived. While obviously all models are different, I'm installing a used GE range and converting to LP and one peculiar thing about it is (maybe it's because it's an older 90's model) is how different my regulator is. It does not have a hex nut cap but rather just a strong plastic cap over one end, and to convert it all you do is unscrew it and flip it over. I know that sounds similar to a lot of stoves but trust me, this is different.
@KeeperofTheMountain

Yep, that is one variation. It is still doing the same thing though.
@NaYawkr

My new GE range has the same, only if you read the GE Instruction on how to change that orifice you'd never guess in a million years that all you need to do is flip it over. I never trust factory instruction documents, and that saved me a lot of grief, but you did warn a lot of folks that will be victims of trying to do what the manufacturer instructions tell them. GE also has a video on line about how to remove the oven door, except the door in the video doesn't remove that same as your new stove. Then, just to insure they really screw you for doing it yourself, the new stove owners manual also explains how to remove an oven door the new stove does not have on it.

Question it converts it to liquid propane or regular propane gas? I never knew there was a difference until today
@KeeperofTheMountain
5 жыл бұрын
Great question. The stove runs on vapor. Here is how propane works. Propane is known as LP. That means Liquid Petroleum. It is shipped, delivered and stored as a liquid. Propane liquid will boil at -44F. When the liquid is stored in a tank or bottle it tries to boil off causing pressure to build in the vapor space at the top. As you use the vapor, the liquid boils in the tank, making more vapor. like any other liquid, when it goes to vapor it cools off. Like when you get water on you in the summer, as it evaporates it cools you down. Propane does this only at a different rate than water. If you get liquid propane on your skin it will evaporate and freeze you, giving you a freezer burn. If you use propane too fast for the tank you are using, it will freeze up, loose all pressure and your appliance will quit working. Equipment like a fork lift has to use a small fuel tank and thus it will freeze up in a short time and stop working. To fix this problem, liquid propane is taken from the tank to the evaporator in the engine compartment where heat from the engine is used to prevent icing up. Then the motor still runs on vapor. I hope this helps.

I have a question for you Keeper of the Mtn. I bought a used gas range and no conversion kit came with it. Do I have to have a specific orifice for that particular stove or will the ones from my OLD stove fit the new/used stove? They cost me over $100 so I would like to take them out of the old range and put them in the new/used range. Can I do this? Or do I have to call the company that made the stove and order LP orifices from them?
@KeeperofTheMountain
2 жыл бұрын
The answer is maybe. The official answer is Get the kit from the company. The reality is that if they screw in they will work. The only what if that is of real concern is if they are a little small, the burners will not perform well enough to be practical. If they are a bit big, the flame will be a bit bigger. Chances are they are close enough to be fine. You can try it and see if you are happy with the results. It is not unsafe.

If propane runs at a higher pressure, why can't you leave the natural gas jets in there and leave the regulator set at a low pressure? It seems to me with the conversion all you're doing is allowing more pressure in the regulator and limiting it at te jets. I haven't experimented with this but seems logical to have the regulator do the job 🤷♂️
@KeeperofTheMountain
2 жыл бұрын
Natural gas is much different in it's character compared to Propane. There specific gravity is different. Their BTU capacity is different and there range of flammability is different. With all of these variables, the jet size is optimized for that gas specifically.

@KeeperofTheMountain
3 жыл бұрын
On some models if you pull the handles off there will be a small screw head inside the stem that the knob fits on. You use a wrench to hold the stem at low flame and a tiny screwdriver to turn the little screw. One way will make the flame bigger and the other way will make it smaller. Once you have the flame where you want it on low, put the knob back on and use as normal.

A word of caution to the uninitiated; some conversions require that you also change the gas flow and air mixture to the oven and broiler burners. Depending on the brand of stove that you purchase, it may require that you make an adjustment for the gas flow to the oven and broiler burners by turning down a 1/2" or 9/16" nut where the gas feeds into the burner, usually stating that it has to be turned until the nut bottoms out. It may also require that you turn on the gas and check the flame to ensure that the air mixture is correct and burning with a properly adjusted blue flame, with only very slight yellow tips. Too much air and the flame will be yellow indicating that the fuel mixture is too rich and needs more air. That condition would cause the flame to burn leaving a film of soot. Changing the air mixture is easily done by loosening a small screw on the air shutter and turning the shutter slightly until the yellow flame all but disappears. Be aware that too little air and the flame, while it might have the correct color, will look like it wants to leave the burner, like it's jumping away; that means that you need to add a bit more air. Just wanted everyone to know that not all conversions require just a simple orifice and regulator pressure change. If you decide to do this yourself, READ THE CONVERSION INSTRUCTIONS THAT CAME WITH YOUR STOVE FIRST. Good luck.

Something to check after the conversion is the low flame on the burners. Check to see if the flames go low enough to simmer. Often you need to adjust them down. Remove a burner knob and look inside the shaft to see if there is a screw head. If there is, turn burner to lowest flame and while holding shaft from turning adjust the screw. (requires a small head screwdriver.)

Hoping you can settle an argument.. I think that if you connect a red Bernzomatic oxygen tank up to a propane stove, the flame will eventually back feed into the tank when the tank is almost empty, and he says no, the regulator will stop it. Any idea who is right? Honestly, I'm a bit confused on how the same torch can work with propane, oxygen, or mapp.
@KeeperofTheMountain
4 жыл бұрын
The first thing you need to know is that Oxygen is not a fuel. Oxygen does not burn. It does help anything burn hotter though, Map Gas has similar properties as propane and will burn properly in a propane appliance. However it will burn hotter and will shorten the life of the appliance. If you feed an Oxygen and mapgas mixed through the system it can and will backfire up to the point of a check valve. It will damage the appliance. You should not do that.

Normally right by the orifice in the oven, there is an air mixture adjustment. If your flame is yellow, add more air until it is as blue as you can get it without having the flame come off of the burner. If it is wide open and the flame is still a dark yellow, perhaps large, lazy and smoky, you have too large an orifice in the burner.

The socket is 7mm not 9/32 or 11/32. It fits better and generally the spring clip on the out side of the orifice will hold it in the socket. I also would carry a towel to protect the stove top and another for the counter. When ever I took the screws out of the burners and or orifice heads I would put a tiny bit of antisieze on the threads before putting them back. A year or two of boiled over pots you will still be able to get them back out if you ever need to with out breaking the and have to buy a new orifice head. Then check to see that the flames are the correct size. Quite often they need to be adjusted.

Great video but is this only for larger propane tanks or can you connect it to a smaller tank and if so dont most smaller tanks use a connector with a regular already attached? Would you use that kind of hose with a regulator already attached or just a straight hose from range to propane tank?
@KeeperofTheMountain
5 жыл бұрын
Great question. You will always need a regulator. The two main regulators are 10 pound and 2/2 pound also known as 11" wc. (water Column) If the regulator is red or has a red control knob then it is a 10 LB. You do not want that for your stove. Everything else that you can buy in a store is 11" or 1/2 lb. that is what you need. Thank you for watching.

im converting a stove to propane in south america, is it ok that the small propane tank stays in the house? about 5 feet away more or less
@KeeperofTheMountain
2 жыл бұрын
Great question. Generally speaking, here in the US the answer is no. The tank and regulator needs to be outside and the pressure in the house should be .5 PSI or 9-11 inches of water column.

While trying to remove the sealed burner the screw head snapped off on the used Maytag stove I was converting to LP , I can"t remove the screws without them breaking , Various liquid wrench etc did not help. Any help or suggestions might save me the total cost of the stove.

You may have to replace the burners. normally the pot metal that most of them are made of will not survive getting the corroded bolts out.

Do a google image search for, "Propane tank clearances". The picture you will see is right out of the code book. Then you will know where to put the tank. My recommendation for cooking only is a single 120 gallon tank. For most people that is over a year's worth of cooking gas. Use a Rego model number LV404B34 regulator at the tank. Piping will depend on where the range is and where the tank is. A 120 gallon tank can sit right against the house and not require going underground. Any tank over 150 Gallons must be 10' from the house and property lines. I recommend having a propane company come out and tell you what you need to do in your specific application.

Is there any info u can give me about my same exact range throwing a ph5 code? I followed ur video to convert it and it worked also my flames on my burner won't turn down alot
@KeeperofTheMountain

I do not know about the code. There should be a code reference in the operators manual. That is available online if you do not have it. You will need the model and serial # off of the stove. If you slowly turn the burners like you are going to turn it off instead of the low setting, you can turn it as low as you want.

Hi there, I have a GE stove about 5 yrs old. It was professionally converted to LP. Everything worked perfectly for years, but the other day, I went to turn on a little used right front burner and it looked more like a campfire. The other ones are fine. Is it possible that the little brass thing needs to be tightened or ? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you for your help

thanks for the video, I bought a super expensive gas stove and no-one at home depot asked if it was for propane or the city gas pipe lines, long story short I started using my stove and all of the sudden all my nice pots and pans have a black film all over them and it is impossible to get rid of so every night I scrub and scrub my pots and pans and not to mention every time I use the oven that film is all over the oven,I'm a slave to my stove every single day I clean and clean it. I was to the point of getting rid of it and just buying an electric stove so I finally asked the guy that fills my propane tanks what was happening and he said oh yeah you bought the wrong kind of stove ! and now you need to buy these converters - I'm like what the heck no one told me. Any-who you make it look easy enough for me to do it. Thanks.... oh where can I buy the converts ?
@KeeperofTheMountain
5 жыл бұрын
If you can, go back to where you bought it and request the kit. It may be in the extra stuff that came with the range. The other option is to look on Amazon. Have your make , model, and serial number handy

Will this work on an antique natural gas stove from the 30's????
@KeeperofTheMountain
7 ай бұрын
The principles are the same. It will take some trial and error but, if you are determined, you can sort it out. Obviously there is no "Kit" for an antique stove. However, It is beyond the scope of this video to make a custom job of it. Physics are constant. Keep in mind that some antique appliances are fitted for "Manufactured Gas". That is yet another creature that I may cover in a future video if I find a good appliance to work with.

I saw another video, from Sears partsdirect that they did some adjustments to air flow through the bottom drawer, and some other adjustments through the bottom, in the back. I am converting a Electrolux (bought out by Frigidaire), dual fuel (electric convection, natural gas), to LP. It was top of the line 12 years ago, that my mom is selling me. Have you ever dealt with this type? I would love to hear your advice, if you have dealt with similar setups. I am very mechanically inclined and will work on anything. I just want to get all of the juicy details and get it right. Thanks for the great video!
@KeeperofTheMountain
2 жыл бұрын
The key to adjusting the air is to get the bluest flaim you can with small orange tips. If you give it too much air, it will have troubles lighting and the flames will start to lift off of the burners. Too little air and the flames will get orange and lazy. That will shoot up everything. You will just have to play with it to get the best flame possible.
