I did the same basic thing in our 2000. Kountry star as soon as we bought it, except I used 4,000° K silicone coated strips and I used no connectors, I soldered everything using "RED+BLK Siamese wire" and I glued the strips down with contact cement. Most have two strips, a few have four (over the counter and sink) and in the bedroom and hall they have six with the two extra strips on the inside edge aimed into the wardrobe and away from the bed (toward the wall and floor at the foot of the bed) my wife appreciates those two. I added no lights, but put LEDs in every fixture. (bayonet and wedge based) Ron W4BIN

That sounds like what I did. I adjusted the number of strips depending on where they were going. I didn't use water proof LED's because they were not needed in this application. The connectors were a pain to work with frankly but I was trying to do a minimum of soldering to keep is simple for the average user. Thanks for watching!

When you soldered the copper I could not see the tips on the led strip lights for positive and negative leads. Also, could you explain the connector tabs and what they do to route the power to the strips and then to the switch in a diagram?
@trbowlin

I'm not sure I understand the first question. I soldered the black to the negative and red to the positive. The cut points on the LED strips are marked for polarity so it's pretty straight forward. I can send you a schematic but have no way to post an image here in the comments. To keep your email private feel free to email me here: trbowlin@gmail.com I am happy to help.

Capacitors: take the white & back and put them together for a minute to discharge the system. Very easy

True. But in the case of fluorescent fixtures the caps discharge after you turn off the power because they still provide power because to the the bulb, if only for a couple of milliseconds. I always try and warn people (stupud) to be careful when working with power.

Great video, I need to do the same in my kountry coach / Newmar, I just don't know if I can do it, but I guess I'm going to have to try, cause I'm not spending $70 per light I have 6 of them to do, but I had a friend suggest I take the insert from light and get a wood worker to make a fancy oak design and just put 3 or 4 puck lights in it....and mount in space...WHAT DO YOU THINK ???
@trbowlin
4 жыл бұрын
You can do this project. Just practice the soldering on a short piece of the LED strip and use a 9volt battery to test your solder connections. It's easy. That being said, I thought about doing the exact same thing. My only stopping point was getting the wood milled. As a full-timer I didn't have the tools to mill the wood. The other thing, not as important but as you saw the cost per light was about $8.50 vs. the pucks at roughly $6.00 each and by the time you get the wood and pucks you may be knocking on $40 per light.

LEDS failing. We bought some JOYLIT from Amazon. emitters are individually failing over a 2 week period. I am guessing they do not like the heat in the fixture.

Get TR! Thanks for a great video! I have used LED adhesive strips for lights for light painting, and I found that the adhesive stuff gave up after a year or two. So when I do this I plan to put a strip of Go2 G!ue or E600 on both lateral sides of each strip just to be sure they don't come loose at an inconvenient time. For a main light in a bedroom, do you recommend 4,5, or 6 strips? I know I can figure it out by trial & error, but it is WAY easier to ask(G). Finally- if you are a full time RVer, where do you have the cool workspace complete with power supply? (Former Elect. Eng.?)
@trbowlin

I put 5 in the bedroom fixture, but it is the only overhead light. My workspace is also my kitchen table, my computer workspace and other things when needed. The power supply is just an old soldering station I had and I use it enough to carry it around. Not former electrical😆 engineer, I was the IT director for an Engineering Company and had to work with a ton of EE's! It just sort of rubbed off!

Thanks for the rep!y! Sorry for the greeting in my original message. My software does predictive spelling (poorly). It changed "hey" into "get", & I did not catch that error. It also changed "Go2" into Y2K. Anyway- I would love to continue discussion privately. My email is eyesguymodesto@gmail.com. Some of my light painting can be seen at Viewbug.com. I was told "the only dumb question is the one that is NOT asked", so, any concerns about the temperature of the light strips on the metal and subsequent surrounding areas ?
@trbowlin
4 жыл бұрын
Agree! I used to teach and had a similar saying...don't be afraid to ask a question..you never the only one with the same question but afraid to ask! In short no, they generate very little heat. The case (can if you will) is metal and transfers heat very well. In actuality the florescent ballast generated more heat than the LED's.

Hey TR, how ya doing, just watched your ac cleaning video... But I came back to this one because, my wife found 18 led tubs in Walmart today and bought 12 of them enough to replace all the florescent tubes in our Kountry coach, my question is, are they ok to use, didn't remove and ballesters or anything, just replaced bulbs.???? Advise or any concerns ????
@trbowlin

No, they should work just fine as long as the wattage is equal or less than the original tubes. My bet is your going to be in good shape. Let me know how well they work.

My nominal voltage is about 12.3 when on led acid, 13.2 LiFePO4 but I charge as high as 14.2. The led strips were getting very hot and I was over driving my 5050 led chips with too much current above 12.8 200ma per led www.waveformlighting.com/pcb-designs/led-strip-light-schematic-and-voltage-information . I added a 1.5a diode tp drop the voltage 1v to prevent overdriving.

Sorry, I totally missed this comment somehow! I've not experienced overheating with my LED strips. I also charge my Lithiums to 14.2 but if memory serves the top .4 to .6 volts come off the batts pretty fast. Now you have me curious, I am going to do a little experimenting. Which diode did you use (part #).
