A large freezer bag (maybe a smaller snack portion to fit inside of one) would be safer plus you get to see the transformation happening if transparent. Or a lazy version where you use the original package, just open a bit, pour the oil and spices in, seal it back, shake it, let it rest.

I never thought about this, one way or the other, until several years ago when I was opening a box of trash bags. I noticed a warning on the box that said not safe to use for food. I found the following from Ask USDA... U.S Department of Agriculture "Can I cook or store foods in a trash bag? Mar 23, 2023 KNOWLEDGE ARTICLE No. The use of plastic trash bags for food storage or cooking is not recommended because they are not food-grade plastic and chemicals from them may be absorbed into the food. That having been said...Thank you for the recipe, it looks delicious 💖👍

The USDA does not recommend using plastic trash bags for food storage or cooking because they are not food-grade plastic and chemicals from the bags may be absorbed into the food. Some garbage bags may be made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which can release harmful chemicals when exposed to heat. Instead of trash bags, you can use things specifically designed for food, such as zip-top bags and reusable plastic food storage containers. The safest plastic food storage containers are HDPE, LDPE, and PP plastics, which include juice and milk jugs, grocery bags, bread bags, produce bags, and food storage boxes.

The only problem is that most trash bags contain chemicals to deter insects, mold, and the like. These companies aren't required to list the chemicals, as the products are not marked as food safe. Great idea, but could spell trouble for some.

I think the recipe idea is great, especially with holidays coming up. I'm dead set against using garbage bags, they are not "food grade" for obvious reasons, and most contain chemicals against mold and insects. I can't imagine allowing food to marinate in that, especially adding oil! I'd rather go buy a big plastic bin, food safe, and mix it up in that. That would also allow you to store it air tight.

Easier to use a larger food grade bucket with a good fitting lid. Put all your ingredients in the bucket. Add ranch dressing mixed with oil (regular is best) garlic powder. Best ingredients are cheerios, Shreddies, gold fish, Crispex cereal, mini ritz, cheesits and mini pretzels. Roll the bucket back and forth! Enjoy. Freezes like a dream! Any sogginess would be the least of my concerns. Garbage bags aren't food grade and definitely not a safe material to use for anytbing you intend to consume. Garbage bags are most likely the worst type of plastic bags you could ever use for food as the bags are intended for trash, dirt and grime and also often have a strong plastic smell even if they're unscented. The idea is good for parties but for the love of snacks, use food grade containers to make and store the snack mix!

Too many comments to sift through.....this appears to be a riff on crack pretzel recipe going around several years ago. Two bags mini pretzels, butter oil & packet of ranch dressing mix. Mix it all together in a container you can toss periodically over a few days. Amazingly whatever is in your mix absorbs the oil. You can also bake on low heat to get it to absorb faster, and use other salad dressing mixes, like onion. Your mix was interesting.👍🏻

I have to agree with most of the comments, this is one of those things where "why would you do this?" and even if you can, why?
