Since partaking in The Wilderness Living Challenge we focused on locating, storing and preserving foods which are broadly available. This is the subject of our current weekend.
From there we could add food that was currently in season including waterfowl such as ducks and goose as well as grouse. Small game species also open in the fall including squirrel and rabbit. Roots and tubers including cattail and wapato are also ideal to harvest in the fall, as the starches concentrate into the lower portions of the plant at this time.
As we discovered, laws and harvest regulations are highly prohibitive when trying to live off the land. Navigating this river system showed an abundance of beaver numbering about a dozen with just a 1 hour paddle. High in fat, these would make a great addition to our caloric requirements.
