12 week bushcraft challenge week #9. Participants of the challenge had to do 4 things : cowboy coffee, flat rock cooking, bannock recipe and fish on a stick or also called basket cooking. I had to do this at -15C in the dark due to a busy holiday season schedule but got it done.
Basic Nomadic Woodsman Bannock Recipe :
Ingredients :
- 3 cups flour(white or other) ;
- 2 or 3 tablespoons of baking powder (2 or even 3 tablespoons for a more fluffy bannock) ;
-1 tablespoon of salt ;
-1 or 2 tablespoons of white sugar (maple sugar or brown sugar can also be used for a more dessert style bannock) ;
-2 tablespoons of melted butter ;
-1 cup of milk (water can also be used but is not as flavourful) ;
Mix all ingredients in a large container so that you can stir everything in a nice dough. You might need to add liquid or flour depending on the consistency you are looking for. You can then either roll the bannock in a elongated shape to wrap around a unbarked stick of a non toxic wood to put over fire. You could also cook it in a greased or buttered pan. Use a low to medium temperature and cook on all sides this will allow the bannock to cook on the inside and not only on the outside. Easiest cooking method is in a pan as you can flip it and it gives a very even cooking surface. Bon appetit !
