In this episode Chet teams up with Jan Palmen to prepare an Indonesian fried rice dish that was one of his mother’s specialties.
Jan is Chet’s son-in-law’s brother and was visiting from Colorado. We thank Jan for visiting Chet’s kitchen and spending time cooking with him.
Nasi Goreng
This is a recipe for 4 cups of rice, you can increase or decrease the ingredients to suit your needs.
4 Cups long grain rice, (this should be cooked and cooled before making the rice dish)
1 large bouillon cube (chicken or beef will work)
½ head of green cabbage
1lb ground beef
3 bunches of green onions
2 cloves of garlic
6-8 Tbsp Vegetable oil (as needed to coat pan)
Soy Sauce (to taste)
Sambal Oelik (chili paste) (to taste)
Cook and cool rice
Coat the bottom of a large pan or stock pot and Saute onions and garlic until limp
Add the hamburger meat and brown
Begin to add cabbage in sections and stir until limp, continue to add cabbage till gone (as shown in video)
Add bouillon cube
4-5 healthy shakes of soy sauce,
2-3 heaping tablespoons of sambal
Stir in all spices well
Lower the temperature on stove so rice does not burn
Begin to add the cold rice gradually, stirring to mix in all ingredients
Once all the rice is added begin a taste test and add more soy sauce and sambal to your preference.
Your nasi goreng is now ready to enjoy. This dish is delicious with a fried egg or egg strips added to the top.
