@@30roundclipazine79 / it depends entirely on the situation and skill of installer. More often than not, old installs are done poorly, the location/spacing between surfaces is incorrect, the flanges is broken or not properly secured, the sub floor flexes due to poor construction or water damage. Nothing is simple, the technique is subtle, and if done badly then water finds a way... Bottom line: amateurs are dangerous. Kevin Breckenridge, find out what the safe maximum black powder load is and never go over it, I have a ruined brass framed Colt from over-loads. Also, never get distracted when loading. I under-loaded a cylinder once while yakking at the range and that led to a barrel obstruction and a barrel split from end to end. A '58 Remington 44 doesn't shoot very well with little or no powder.

I read that using wax rings, that are made to seal toilets, are not good for use in your expensive BP rifles and revolvers. Supposedly the wax isn't pure bees wax. And that it has acids from other ingredients that are corrosive to the barrels of BP guns. Like I said it's something I read. Make of it what you will.

I went through this exercise several years ago, and like you, I was tired of paying an exorbitant amount for the name brands and the formulations available on fleabay left much to be desired. I used to work for a wax supplier, so this was a pretty easy task. My mix is the basic 50/50 beeswax and petroleum wax, but instead of using a paraffin based petroleum wax, I use a 160 degree F. melting point Microcrystalline wax. This gives a lube that has a tacky feel and is fairly soft, so it can be applied by hand, yet has a melting point that prevents it from running in hot weather. It also will not affect powder in any way. I have used it in my Lyman bullet sizing press as well as pan lubing.

Hi Steve. With due respect, have you tried the wax rings for lube yet? I did a check on two brands from Home Depot and Lowe's, and could not get a defined answer on material composition. I could not find any indication of bees wax; unfortunately. Can you shed any more light on this?

Sorry man but that wax in those rings is the nastiest stuff on the planet, gooey as messy like no other, and you should not use your bare hands to handle it (been there done that) . C. R. Laurence sells huge tubes of beeswax that is clean and easily handled and perfect for lubing bullets. Traditionally used to lube concrete screws.
@FortuneCookie45LC
3 жыл бұрын
Paul Watterson - thanks for your comment, Paul...yes, the wax is gooey and messy; the nitrile gloves can be worn when handling, and I do wear those when doing toilet repairs and installations. I immediately went over to check on those CR Laurence beeswax tubes - 1 pound for $10+ and shipping and they are not pure beeswax (beeswax is on the expensive side), but a formulation of waxes - all good stuff though. I look at the lube I just made from the seals, and it is the perfect hardness for bullets, and the cost spent for the pound and a half made at 90 cents to $1.35 a seal (much less if recovered wax seals are included). It's still advantageous to make our own lube. However, I do see the attractiveness of the 1 pound Laurence tube that costs about 25% less than buying the smaller tubes of Lyman ready made bullet lube. Thanks for the tip on this, Steve

It's a great feeling to find something cheaper and does exactly what the more expensive item does. Every weekend when we would go out on our boat and spend the weekend on the water we would come back with a brown stain completely around the boat. By the way this is the Chesapeake Bay I'm speaking of. I was using this stuff that was almost $30 a bottle that you mixed up into a bucket of water. It really did not seem to work so I googled it. Come to find out if you go to the dollar store and buy toilet bowl cleaner you get a bottle that's about 10 to 12 oz and it's only a dollar. I bought one to test it and sure enough it works better than the name brand and only cost a dollar. We went back down there and cleaned the shelf out of the cleaner and hit the other dollar store a little further away and clean them out. That's one thing I like about the internet is people like yourself and others that share good information for everyone. Thank you for putting this video up. Please look further at using the toilet ring because the petroleum wax used is "slack wax" which is really junk compounds and has poor lubrication qualities and varies greatly from batch of rings to batch (especially if you use different mfg products). I actually tested the qualities as bullet lube in an 2400 round test, borescoping between cleanings and it's greatly inferior to the not very expensive "gulf wax" used for canning. I also tested microcrystaline wax blended in and it works better. Honestly, by being penny wise, cheaping out on a couple dollars wax you are 'pound foolish' as the old saying goes. Can you use it: yes. Should you use it: No.

Here is the problem with your wax toilet rings. They are actually not made with bee’s wax, but instead with vegetable oil and petroleum that also contain Polyurethane additives that are added to it as well. Which you actually do not want to run through your black powder guns. Most black powder enthusiast and black powder competition shooters actually use a mix of bee’s wax, and tallow due to it being non-corrosive. Some also use coconut oil, or olive oil with the mix having a ratio of 50/50 or even 70/30 depending on climate. With most agreeing to avoid toil wax rings due to it containing polyurethane.

josh panter - Thanks for posting...the interest in reloading and bullet casting is exploding...Good time to learn alll you want as reloading supplies and even bullet molds are in short supply. Lee Precision cannot make their molds fast enough to meet demand - the back orders are piled up to Mission Peak. Best to ya, and Merry Christmas to you and your wife, Steve

Some Guy - Toilet ring wax is not the best for candle making, but 1/3 candle wax is great to be added to toilet seal wax to harden same for bullet lube...And the rule with used toilet seal wax is "if it looks good, it is good". Best to ya, Steve
