+Vikram Mervyn Paul Newman as great an versatile actor that he was, I feel he wasn't given the accolades he deserved in his early career. Not that he didn't get the some great scripts, but that he was up against fellow actors like Brando, Peck, and Douglas who were great in their own right, but seemed to grab the lions share of the limelight. Paul Newman will always be my favorite.

Brando in the 50s was one of a kind and an innovator of a highly emotional, highly passionate style others copied. Paul, for the most part, early on, played a less outwardly emotional character but, instead, was introspective and worldy with a blunt manner of expressing his thoughts, e.g., Hud, Harper, and Hombre. Over time, he got more expressive emotionally and had greater range. I love both actors' work but, for me, no one tops Bogie for all-around versatility and range.

Paul Newman loved playing this role. He said, with a character like that, an actor can perform miracles. After he did this scene with the Plastic Jesus, he ran to the director and said, "I can do it better." Rosenberg, the director said, "No one could have done that any better." He was right.

It's here on KZitem. Don't remember the title of the video. This scene is almost to much to bear. The next scene it when they lock him up in "the box", a cruel oblong hut, very small, and the prisoner must either stand up or sit on concrete for the night. No ventilation or light or any sort. Hot as hell. Florida nights can be brutal in the summertime. It's to keep the prisoner from trying to escape to go to his mom's funeral for final respects. What a cruel way of treating a grieving son.

And THAT'S exactly where his Personal rebellion started: had the Warden just left him alone, there WOULDN'T have BEEN a problem In the first place! There are two types of people in this world: show them this film and you will know what type you're dealing with. As a single guy, if I play this for a woman and she's distracted and ambivalent, she's not for me. But if she's totally transfixed through the whole film and afterwards, goes "wow..." with a tear in her eye, well... she just might be a keeper. It's a good test. Named my boy after this film and the man responsible for 1/4 of the New Testament (Dr. Luke). All this character truly needed was a father figure in his life and God only knows what he would have become. That's the real hidden message of the film. Almost every prison to this day and since the beginning of time is full of men who were raised without fathers. Almost any man that walks through this life frustrated with the malady of angst in his heart that he can't describe, again, was raised without a father or an abusive one.

The thunderstorm scene, testing God to strike him shows that Luke had belief in God and then again when he's singing plastic Jesus in tribute to his deceased mother. Then once again for the last time as he prayed in the church before his murder. This clearly shows Luke was not only trying to escape the imprisonment of himself but also his his battered and tormented soul. No doubt the scars of his upbringing, failed marriage and the war had contributed to this and his delinquency towards society. We all have a sentence and an imprisonment in our lives. Whatever the case, there IS Salvation available to us. Make that peace with God a daily priority. You have one life on this earth today and an eternal life in heaven waiting. The thunderstorm scene, err hurricane scene testing God is again portraid in Forrest Gump when Lieutenant Dan rides Jenny's mast tempting God to strike him while Forrest is battling to steer Jenny and ride out the hurricane. Later we see Lieutenant Dan has made his peace with God and thank Forrest for saving his life. Well actually Forrest carried Lieutenant Dan to safety, God saved his life.
