Honestly when I was younger ( I am Old now... been playing since I was a Teen and its now more then 35 years later), I would have dismissed much of your playing as "Jazzsterbation" and refused to pay too much attention. Fortunately for me, now, I have diversified my appreciation for different styles of guitar playing. Your Hillbilly ways, Country Vibe, Jazz Cat understandings, and Blues Bent Roots are an Amazing mix of Americana Textures and Flavors... if you were cooking in the kitchen I would constantly be back for "seconds" and fat and happy on what you are always serving up. Thank you for sharing.

Love hearing the inside stuff of your gig experience. Played at Kingston Mines open stage Sunday and having to nail riffs immediately with strangers is a rush and frightening- 1st song the other guitar calls B-flat, he sings one verse and nods to me for a lead 😳- managed to fill in but felt wonky, next song Bm thrill is gone - had the place go n- so fun-!thanks for your channel- helped me get off the couch and to the gigs

Hey man, how do you navigate the fretboard so effortlessly? Every time you switch positions, even within the same scale, you create a fresh lick or melody. Could you share your approach? You're so open and free while playing but I feel stuck in scale patterns and would love some advice on breaking out of these boxes.

I think I get what your saying ...your approach is more organic, Beato is mechanical (theory) ... both important ...but I want to drive ...I can fix the engine after and do the analysis to help understand what I did later...my fingers they kind of know ...anyway friends all around the world Guthrie ...this from Gatineau Qc. keep em coming ...much appreciated 🎸

I just took the basics of that on my Alvarez and then started improvising my own stuff. I naturally eventually went to A Dm Em7 Am then back to A major. It just sounded better to my ear I guess. Then I just started playing a bunch of different stuff. That's what other musicians inspire me to do. So you inspired me. Thanks.

Hi Guthrie! I recently discoverd your channel and I love it, lots of cool stuff. I am curious about the Caged system. I learnt the fretboard\arpeggios\scales\chord shapes in a different way but I got some students during the years saying that they got stuck with the CAGED system. They could only play in a vertical way, following the CAGED shapes. Do you have any videos where you explained how to play in a more horizontal way? I feel my knoweldge of the CAGED system it's a bit limited and I want to help them.

Mr GT, it is really amazing that you can extract so much melodic inventions using your fluid knowledge of CAGED in ever smaller pieces. I learned the neck using CAGED, but you really expand it so much. I have some much more to learn. Shame we call it CAGED in a way, when its really just a way to learn all our triads and inversions. But man, do you ever make it work beautifully.
@jeffro.

Y'know, it's funny that ppl have arranged the chords that way (but I know that's the order they link together) to make that word: caged. It sounds like something you're caught in, that limits you... But instead, it helps FREE you to play all over, so that anywhere you're playing on the fretboard, you'll be able to find the next chord (or notes, triad, whatever) nearby! Ironic, right? BTW, maybe we could drop the E, because it's just a chopped-off C. Then we're just talking about a cage, like a scaffold, instead of being "caged up." Hmmm?

Regarding how you started out talking about not feeling so great until you got on stage .... I know the feeling, when you get around ppl who appreciate you, you get amped up! Keep up the honesty, GT. i think we need to move to TN when my wife retires. (I already am, but I'm starting a 2nd career as a freelance copywriter. I can do that anywhere!) ~14:00 : That's why I got into Classical guitar! I like the sounds of taking a note, changing the bass under it, and you change the feeling. That's especially true when you're playing 3rd & 7th notes on top, or some other funky combo. I just like being able to set, and change, a mood with just a few notes. On the technical side, I like "countermelodies" where the upper melody is doing one thing, and the bass is doing another. Great stuff, as usual! I love your lessons & insights. 👌👍 🤪
