Great stuff, Rick! All of these accessories are very useful. The little dust cover is really neat. I would use that, but my house is so dusty that the plinth collects a lot of dust as well. So, in my case, I need the full dust cover most of the time. Keep sharing all these new items you come across. It saves time for the rest of us doing research.

I'm getting back into vinyl after a 30+ year break, and am amazed at the new technology and toys available out there. This is one of the best channels I've seen that gives 'no nonsense' advice and tips, so a big "Thank You" from Australia to you sir!

I use the Audio-Technica AT6003R Phonograph/Turntable Cartridge Storage Case for storing my extra phono cartridges. I love how they display each cartridge.

Kirmuss (ultrasonic cleaning machines) offers a record holder similar to the Stable 33. Precisely for setting down records while cleaning. Can't live without it as I clean multiple records at a time.

I like that "transit plateau" thing - I use a bottle of wood glue, because the spout is just the right diameter for the spindle hole.

You might want to consider installing a better tone arm, like a tubular "J" or "S" style. Why? Besides the added mass for better tracking, vibrations can only travel in a straight line. Remember the string with a can at each end. Sound doesn't travel unless the string is tight and in a straight line. So, the vibrations made from the stylus playing through the grooves of a record may bleed off into the straight tone arm shaft and dissipate. With a tone arm without a removeable headshell it's harder, but fitting tight-fitting "O" rings immediately behind the headshell can stop the vibrations from traveling along a straight-shaft tone arm.

@4:31 -- That will affect your vertical tracking alignment. @5:55 -- If you have any "collector's pressings", then consider holding on to the original sleeves. You should still use the Groove Guardian sleeves. Just do not discard the original sleeves. I am not saying that the original sleeves will ever have value. For one thing, how can anyone authenticate an original sleeve? The reason that I thought of this is because I used to collect various type cards (baseball, Star Wars, etc). One day, I found out that the wrapping that the cards came in were more valuable than the cards (not sure about all of the cards -- but the wrapping became a hot item). That was 30 years ago, so I do not know the status, today. Nearly everyone tossed the wrappings, making the wrappings a rarity. So for collectors that wanted it all, those wrappings became valuable. Many packs of cards came with bubblegum, too. I have a vague recollection that if you also had that bubblegum, it was worth something. I mean, who saved the bubblegum?
@TheJoyofVinylRecords

I remember the bubblegum - flat and tasted like cardboard! I used to collect the 'Planet of the Apes' TV series cards and these other cards that were the old Universal Monsters and others , and some had funny sayings on them, but I can't recall what the cards were called.

My Project Perspective turntable is full manual. I bought a Technics tonearm lift to raise the tonearm at the end of play. It doesn't interfere at all with the operation of the tt. It is a bit fiddly to set up but works every time. Oh, and it is a little pricey.

I like the record holder puck, though I will make one on my lathe. Pretty easy. Either all wood, or with a copper rod center. Have some left over. -- Recently learned about Kirmus inner sleeves, which just have a very small printed area at bottom of the 3 mil rice paper. Not that ugly banner of Mofi, or most others I am aware of. Don't know what they cost, came "free" with purchase of my new Rega Naia.

It's cool to see recommendations from somebody who also has a Thorens turntable. That reamer made by stable is the best thing ever and sees frequent use. I really like the idea of their platter cover cuz I'm in that same boat with lifting off this dust cover and figuring out where to put it, so I think I'll be grabbing one of those really soon. Have you tried any different bladder mats other than the cork one that comes from vinyl nirvana? I'm really curious to see if there are improvements to be there?
@TheJoyofVinylRecords
Ай бұрын
Funny you ask, Chel. I have tried different mats. I switched to acrylic for awhile, but seem to always go back to the cork/rubber one from Vinyl Nirvana. If I could find an acrylic one that was exactly the same thickness I might stick with acrylic.

I've got one thing that I've been looking for but have never come across or found yet. I'm waiting for a company that builds these helpful VC types of tools. First off, there are plenty of things that kind of come close to doing what I wish a company would just go ahead and build. We really need a company that has a deadwax helping tool that will be a lighted magnifier / camera with a solid base that it's mounted to andb it reaches out over the album. There are plenty of lighted magnifiers but they don't allow you to maneuver the magnifier / camera out far enough to reach over the deadwax. They have a base and a camera built-in to the magnifier so that you can grab pictures. But they are really made for other things like jewelry and coins and not for LPs and trying to read the runouts. Now there are some that will reach out further and probably work. But I'm not going to pay $300 to $700 for one of those. To have something that would help light and magnify the runout text would be so helpful especially to someone like me. I'm legally blind and it's a nightmare trying to get the information off of a record at times. If I had a third hand I could probably do it a lot easier with just a handheld magnifier. But you need one that has a sturdy enough base and will reach out over the vinyl where the magnifier can be positioned over the center label area. Why someone hasn't invented one of these already is beyond me. Even for people with perfect vision it can be difficult to read the run out of an album. I hope the way I described this makes sense and you understand what I'm describing. And as for Sound Deck, I bought one of the platter mat dampening pieces from them. It was rather expensive and I even got a 10% discount using the code that the channel I saw it on had worked out with them. But as soon as I got it on the platter, I could instantly tell that it was money well spent. It knocked out 95% of the issues I had had with vibrations coming through my wood floors and reaching the turntable. I did not even realize how much distortion I had been experiencing prior to getting that platter mat until I started listening with it. I couldn't believe how much better and different the sound was and how great of a job at cleaning up the audio it did. Brian in Fort Worth 🎶

Great feedback on the Soundeck mat, Brian! I know exactly what you mean about the difficulty in reading the runout groove. At different times I've tried to go through my collection to identify them accurately, but eventually give up because of the difficulty in seeing the runout 99% of the time. I'd love a solution like what you envision that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

The problem with the dust protector is that while it protects your record, the plinth still gets dust. That’s the purpose of a dust cover, to protect the plinth as well as the record. You don’t want dust to get into the cracks of your turntable and possibly affecting its operation.
@TheJoyofVinylRecords
Ай бұрын
I thought of that. You're certainly not wrong! I'm constantly cleaning the plinth as it is too.

Something that has puzzled me for a while is that vibration is energy and energy never just disappears. It has to be converted into something else. What becomes of the vibrations when using dampers? Any thoughts?
@MrAustrokiwi

It is turned into heat(That is my understanding)
@TheJoyofVinylRecords

@MrAustrokiwi is right. They do become heat in some situations. In some situations, unabsorbed vibrations are diffused or reflected.

don't know if you can get it where you are. For my TD 160 I used Isonoe isolation feet. although I would note I had to install 6mm threaded inserts so as to fit the feet( didn't buy the universal version). My system is on a parquet floor the isonoe feet were highly effective( stopped the tone arm bouncing around when any one walked near the TT). The feet were originally designed for Turntables operating in a night club environment

I rotate through 3 turntables and thus 3 cartridges. I use a stylus timer dedicated to each, so i have an idea about the amount of wear on each. Unfortunately, they rely on someone remembering to turn them on and off at the appropriate point. There is a similar product that does not require human intervention, but requires attaching small magnets to the platter. Not sure if that is a good idea or not.
@TheJoyofVinylRecords
Ай бұрын
Hi Fred! I'm with you - the magnet would make me a but nervous, but it's probably safe. I used to keep track but always forgot so now I'm in the habut of changing once a year when I can. If I can't afford it at the time it's within 18 months.
@chelillingworth9466
Ай бұрын
@@fredlennon5937 I wish there was a way on the stylus timer for if you leave it on that you could adjust your time back... Without this feature it's really frustrating to use, I can't tell you how many times I've left the timer on overnight. Using a slightly expensive MC cartridge I really do want to keep track of the time because the replacement is not cheap.

It's not silly at all. I bought the record weight (and my turntable) I use from Dave at Vinyl Nirvana who recommends them for use on the Thorens. When looking at other weights, if it's the same or less than the one I own I feel safe in using them.
