We all know we eventually have to reach Net Zero. The heating of our homes causes 15 to 20% of global CO2 emissions. Decarbonisation of this demand is therefore an essential part of the energy transition.
About 70% of European households are insufficiently insulated and still require high temperature heating systems. This certainly applies to countries with a cold climate. Full electrification requires enormous investments from homeowners, grid operators and governments. Net congestion already leads to an increase in power outages in countries worldwide. How can we instantly decarbonize the heating sector, without overloading the electricity grid?
Cooll has developed a unique technology that combines the energy savings of a heat pump with the comfort of a boiler. Where an electric heat pump is driven by a compressor, a thermally driven heat pump uses the heat of combustion from natural gas, biogas or hydrogen to drive a very efficient heat pump cycle. This cycle is based on adsorption with activated carbon and does not use any polluting refrigerants. The technology consumes 30 to 40% less energy, as compared to current condensing boilers, and thus substantially reduces CO2 emissions. This unique technology was originally developed within the ESA space program.
Although energy is extracted from the outside, Cooll’s heat pump does not require an outdoor unit. The system is silent, since the core technology does not need a rotating compressor. This allows the heat pump to be installed at the location of the existing central heating boiler. Regardless of whether this is in the attic, basement, inside or outside the house. With virtually the same electricity costs as a boiler, your gas, biogas or hydrogen consumption will immediately drop by 30 to 40%.
It's an illusion to think that we can electrify 100% of our heating demand in the coming decades. We need multiple solutions instead. Cooll’s thermally driven heat pump is a crucial piece of the puzzle in accelerating the energy transition. With a validated performance, field tests and a granted Kiwa certificate, Cooll’s technology is ready for commercialization with one or more partners in Europe, North America and Asia.
