My Cookie (13 years old) has been given librela since june 2024. Prior to that the lab tests were normal. Recently I took her to the vet because she was feeling sick and after several lab tests the vet informed me that she has CKD stage 3! I was shocked when hearing this and now afer seeing your video I am sure that this drug has cause my dog to get sick. Right now she is stable, hopefully she will survive this. No more injections for her. Thank you so much for the information.

Thank you so much for this discussion with Dr. Laurie Coger. I'm deeply grateful that she took on such a hefty expense testing in order to help inform people. I'll be throwing out the beef liver treats now.

Spinach is also a high source of copper. Not as high as liver, but still a significant source of copper, and when combined with beef liver, just raises the level of copper even more. I see a lot of homemade recipes that include both beef liver and a lot of spinach in them that I think raise the copper levels in excess. To a lesser extent, sunflower seeds also are a significant source of copper, but is much less common in homemade recipes. However, with more and more people opting for more whole food sources of fats, a lot of people are turning to whole seeds to meet fatty acid levels, and sunflower seeds help meet Omega 6 fatty acid levels. So, it's important to consider it's level of copper when formulating a recipe where liver is already meeting the necessary copper levels. I use freeze dried pork hearts as training treats. Low in copper, low in fat, and my dogs will do just about anything for it. I cut it up into little tiny bites, so they're not getting a whole lot of calories from it, but a little goes a long way.

@lindajonesartist Don’t forget potatoes. I do not feed them but they have lots of copper and are found in many commercial foods.

Recent Cushing’s diagnosis. Couldn’t do the Rx because it made Buster sick. I did one shot of librela because his appetite has been waning, but don’t think I will do it again. Read that Voyager food is low in copper, so I’m feeding him that with ground turkey topping. He loves is it. Hoping melatonin and adrenal supplements manage things going forward with Cushing’s.

Dr Judy, Small Batch adds copper. I’m now very nervous as that, rotated with Vivaraw, is what I feed my 2 pups. Help! Please advise. Thank you.

So does the excess copper leave the body if you lower it in feeds and treats, or does it just stay stored?

I've been swapping out beef and chicken liver as I can get it, and that seems to be working OK. If I remember correctly, a synthetic copper doesn't interact with the body the same way, either. Hopefully fresh food sources are a bit less toxic even if you overdo it slightly. I don't claim to have a recipe I know is complete and financial problems lately have made that worse, but I'm over here doing my best and both dogs are doing far better on the DIY fresh than they ever did on kibble (and I was buying Wellness, so not the crappiest of brands.) So I must be doing something right. Sasha has been off her meds and seizure free since February, and Lance has had no bloody flares of his IBD since switching him. He does start to flare up a little bit if I don't remove the biggest fat deposits and skin from the chicken, in case that helps anyone, but otherwise he's been good and SO much less anxious. I have told mom (who lives with me and helps with expenses) a couple times that we couldn't afford this and we should try to go back, but she's seen the difference and tells me "hell no." It's been that good. That said, I am CONSTANTLY learning and tweaking my recipe and really appreciate videos like this. Thank you!!

So what are the SYMPTOMS??? my dog drank out of a big bowl that has a little rust in the bottom for a long time, but I always clean it and she always has freshwater and I read that rust won’t hurt people and dogs. Help!!! Her coat looks really, really terrible like there’s not patches of hair loss, just overall her coat is thinner, especially her tail which used to be extremely thick! I’m worried about her! She’s only 4.

IMO excessive amounts of beef liver in dog food is just as bad as adding the synthetics. Too much copper is bad, regardless of where it comes from. Just because it is natural, it does not mean you can overdo it. Common sense should prevail. Liver is cheap and they often put way too much in commercial food. This unfortunately applies to some of the better brands. I get tired of hearing that excessive amounts of natural ingredients are ok.

Nobody should be feeding liver treats. That is asking for it. Plenty of other good options.

@tracim4138 I feed homemade too, but I don't overdo beef liver. I only feed beef liver at 2 percent, or it can be fed at about 5 percent if you rotate with lower copper liver like chicken. I used to feed more beef liver and my dogs started to have rising liver enzymes. Since cutting back, they are fine. Some of the commercial foods could have excessive amounts of beef liver.

@@tracim4138it’s perfectly natural for your pet to get some liver everyday as they would in the wild if they were eating whole prey …with that being said it’s would not be natural for them to consume very much beef liver cuz a dog would never be able to take down a cow by them selves…stick to more species appropriate livers like turkey or chicken and give a reasonable amount to the size of the dog…

You can do a fur analysis test which will test 29 different minerals and toxic metals. Copper is included in this test. drjudymorgan.com/products/vdi-labs-mineral-and-toxic-metal-fur-analysis-test-kit?_pos=3&_sid=5cce0b838&_ss=r
