Another lovely trip down memory lane so thanks Sarah. I was brought up on North Gate off Hollins Rd and went to Werneth Convent so my mum walked me over Frederick St, across Chamber Rd and down Grange Ave every day in all weathers. The clock tower at Werneth school, I could see from my bedroom window which also overlooked Copsterhill park. My cousin lived on Burlington Ave which I also spotted in your video. The football field you showed was known as Merton playing fields and yes has incredible views. Its a pity Werneth convent (the school building) was knocked down as that was an incredible beautiful old building. Thoroughly enjoying your videos having been moved away from Oldham since 1983 so thank you.

Many thanks for your tour around the Coppice, Sarah, it’s where I lived and grew up. The spot where you were stood explaining about Sir William Walton, opposite Werneth Junior School is where my Mum was a lollipop lady for the school which I also went to. Just further up the road at the junction of Burlington Avenue and Chamber Road was the site of Chamber Colliery and the mine shaft was still there in the 1970s along with the old slag heaps which were known as the Coal Hills. Thanks again Sarah, we love your videos!

You might be interested to know that William Walton’s older brother, Charles Noel Walton actually went on to teach at Hulme Grammar School later on, first as a peripatetic teacher, then as music master for the boys school, and then later for the girls school until his retirement in 1961. I know my mother has very fond memories of being taught music by him during her time at the school.

In those cottages two girls , Shirley Goodall & Joyce Howorth lived in that block. There was a empty house at the end of this block. The area going towards Manchester Rd was called , The Pinch Back the Cinema " La Scala " . The other area by the Heron Mill was , " Little Africa ". Street names , Kimberley , Durban, Ladysmith. Stretching my memory cells now. Across from St. Margarets Church there was a gypsy encampment. One of the guys was Hughie Boswell who was part of our group of friends. Another couple of guys , Ralph Renton , Alan & Geoff Owen. I hope my aging brain cells are in working order in respect of names. The other Cinema was the Gem the other side of Manchester Rd. Hollinwood was a decent place to grow up in just after the war, still some open spaces and Daisy Nook was a place we used to spend a lot of time. The people in that area typical Lancashire people , big hearted and pulled together for , " Bon Fire Night " Christmas . We always had huge bonfires , Moms would provide potato pie, black peas, parkin other goodies. We did one year get into trouble because we nicked some pit props , this led to the local plod coming round giving us a clip round the ear and we had to carry the props back and stack them at the pit. You had respect for the bobbies in those days. Long time ago, never thought that I would be walking the streets of Durban , Kimberley, Ladysmith , Mafikeng the genuine ones not those in Hollinwood. Good memories of my childhood. Enjoyed seeing the area again. I have been back a couple of times with my South African wife who had trouble understanding the accents of people of the North

@@SarahsUKGraveyard Found this on the net. William Lees (1869-1925) William Lees (1869-1925) of William Lees and T. and R. Lees 1925 Obituary [1] WILLIAM LEES was born at Hollinwood, near Oldham, Lancashire, on 9th November 1869. He was educated at local schools, supplemented by private tuition at home and on the Continent, and was entered as an apprentice in his father's works at quite an early age. Here he had a thorough grounding in all departments, from the foundry to the drawing office, of which he became the chief when about twenty-five years of age. In the meantime he had received sound scientific training in the Technical Schools at Oldham and Manchester, and had acquired much useful professional knowledge, especially of steam engineering. Later on, the design and improvement of wood-working machinery and colliery machinery received his special attention, and his inventions included improvements in steam-engine valve-gear, and governors, and various useful devices connected with colliery haulage and wood-working. During the last few years he devoted much of his time to the commercial side of the firm's business, and on the retirement of his uncle, Mr. Ralph Lees, in 1918, he became Chairman and Managing Director of the business, which was then under the style of "T. and R. Lees, Ltd.," and this position he held up to the time of his death on 7th January 1925. He became a Member of this Institution in 1912.

Chamber colliery,, or coal pit hills and red flats in 60/70s, a young lad from werneth school fell down a shaft opening and sadly died after years of campaigning to make them safe,, we used to dig for coal lumps in late sixties 2 Bob a bucket full
@Rick-rf7om

The Red Flats - I spent most of my childhood during the 1970s playing football on there after it was landscaped. The field was the last area set aside for the next slag heap should the colliery have remained in use. I also remember a second shaft at the other side of what was then the Metropole garage, now the Asian store in the video. The history of coal mining in the Oldham area is an interesting one, and my Great Great Grandfather, a coal miner, moved from Shropshire to Oldham during the Industrial Revolution to work in a colliery in Chadderton. Like so many at that time they moved to the Manchester and the surrounding towns from around the country to seek a better future.
