New to drilling. Thanks for the clear safety tips. I was doing multiple things dangerously wrong.

Been drilling for years as part of my work and last week i shoved a drill bit into my arm all the way to the bone in a half a second it required stitches and it messed up my arm movment.. out of all the power tools I use on a daily basis I never would have thought a basic drill would have been the one to injure me so drill safety is very important

Thank you for sharing. I regularly pass other people's stories along to my students to help emphasize how a seemingly safe tool can be dangerous.

No where did you mention that with only one hand you can injure your wrist if the bit gets stuck and the drills jerks to the side suddenly.

PRO AQUATICS If you have two hands on the drill and you are progressing slowly through your material than your scenario will not happen.

Insane Oil yes obviously, but you listed reasons to not drill with only one hand and didn’t mention the one I just did.

@@proaquatics4005 Very true...however, if you were following the rules in the first place, we wouldn't be having this discussion, now would we?

Insane Oil I don’t even know what your talking about anymore. I just pointed out that there are more reasons then you listed to use 2 hands when drilling.

Would you say the polarity switch also doubles as a "safety" for the drill when pressed only halfway, locking the use of the trigger?
@InsaneOil

Yes, I would say that it acts as a safety...however, it can easily be pushed out of the "safe" position.

Best practices.

@@InsaneOil So you don't... Use the drill's primary function to lock the bit into place? Seems a bit inefficient on such a safe tool...
@InsaneOil

@@benperry4336 Best practices is to hold the collar the the chuck and manually tighten it and loosen it. I have had student try to take the short-cut you talked about and they end up holding the drill bit instead of the chuck. The get a rude awakening when they squeeze the trigger and it cuts up their hand.
@benperry4336

@@InsaneOil Well that's why you go slow. It's an analog trigger, not two-level on/off. I would also recommend using your palm to grip the chuck and the tips of the fingers to grip the bit as you slowly squeeze the trigger.

@@benperry4336 And do you really think a 15 year old kid that knows everything will follow your directions exactly as you tell them to?
