Great video doctor! Love to learn new information about what to expect with my disease progression going forward and how to keep things working correctly!

Thank you so much for your video, I never knew about corneal hysteresis. My right eye has a thicker cornea due to past surgeries and trauma, and I was just wondering is that the same as being born with if they cornea as far as the IOP possibly being lower than measured. I have glaucoma in my left eye, and was hoping that, my right eye might be more protected by having a thick cornea even though I wasn’t born with it. Next time I see my eye surgeon, I will definitely ask him about my corneal hysteresis. Thank you so much, Peter.

Glad you appreciated this video. I wasn't certain this particular topic would have much of an audience, but it is important information that I wanted to share.

Hi Dr. Richardson! How does one test their corneal hysteresis? I've never had my optometrist or glaucoma specialist mention this to me. Also, what is your opinion on how soon a definitive neuroprotector (independent of iop) will be available? 5 years? 10 years? 20+ years? Some great clinical trials in place at the moment. Would love the opinion of a doctor on this. Thank you! :)

Hello Samantha, Currently there is only one FDA approved device for measuring corneal hysteresis: the Reichert Ocular Response Analyzer. I discuss that in more detail here: david-richardson-md.com/get-your-corneal-hysteresis-number-using-the-ocular-response-analyzer-g3/ With regard to an FDA approved neuroprotectant, an optimistic assessment would be 10 years, realistic 20+ years. Millions have been spent on clinical trials on promising agents in attempts to prove benefit. The problem is that it is just far more difficult to demonstrate neuroprotection than it is IOP reduction. In order to prove an effect it takes a very large and long (expensive) study which very few are willing to attempt.

There is currently only one method of measuring corneal hysteresis which is used by both the Reichert 7CR and Ocular response Analyzer.
