@@bsaunders5271 Annie Walker might just be my favourite Coronation Street character of all time. And that's high praise, when you consider the competition she was up against - including Elsie Tanner, Hilda Ogden, Mike Baldwin and Alf Roberts... So many wonderful actors, brought these brilliantly written characters to life. But for me, Doris Speed as Annie Walker, the queen of the Rovers, style and etiquette maven, doyenne of the lady victuallers and unapologetic snob (with a heart of pure gold), was something very special indeed! 'Corrie' creator Tony Warren wrote the role especially for Doris, and boy did it show - she was perfection as Rovers landlady Annie. A wonderful one-off, we shall not see her like again.

Agreed - it's a totally different show today, and doesn't deserve to carry the name 'Coronation Street'. I recently decided the rot set in circa 1997, with the arrival of the ghastly Battersby family. There was nothing likable or decent about this family of thugs - nothing. And suddenly the scripts were full of nasty acts of selfishness, sadism and cruelty, by them and other villains. When the heart and humour left the Street, it was dead in the water. For me it's glory years coincide with the return of Elsie Tanner, from 1976-'84. The cast and scripts were at their very best during this time. I can pretty much watch those episodes on a loop, and not tire of them. They are still fantastic to this day, because quality is timeless and doesn't date.

I suppose the viewer was supposed to believe he had run down the stairs at lightning speed and out to the back alleyway, hence Len bolting the back door. It's a shame the scriptwriters bottled writing the scene between the Arnold and Len confrontation.
@glamdolly30
8 ай бұрын
@@stevebbuk9557 Yes, that was my assumption - Arnold scarpered downstairs and out the back door, it's the only credible explanation. The bigamy storyline was ahead of its time, in depicting what is now called 'coercive control' (and is a criminal offence), within an abusive marriage. The red flags were there from the start in Arnold's behaviour, but because Emily was a decent, honest person, she assumed Arnold was too, and dismissed any early, niggling concerns. But women in particular should never ignore their gut feelings about the opposite sex - we are given an internal alarm bell (sometimes called 'women's intuition'), to keep ourselves and our babies safe from predators. Ignore that innate internal alarm at your peril! The marriage between Emily and Arnold Swain depicted the classic psychologists 'Cycle of Narcissistic Abuse' - which begins with the abuser idealising/'love-bombing' the victim with affection, attention, compliments and gifts, to win their love. Once they have the victim hooked and emotionally dependant on them, there follows the 'de-valuing' stage, when the abuser changes tack and reveals their true toxicity, criticising/insulting and belittling the victim, to exert control over them. The victim blames herself for the apparent change in her previously loving partner's behaviour. After all, he was so sweet, loving and romantic before - it must be her fault he's suddenly being cruel to her. So she tries harder to win back the previous, adoring man she knew. But of course, that wonderful man she first knew, never existed - it was all a cynical act, put on to win her. Those two stages, idealising and de-valuing, can be repeated many times, to achieve maximum power over the victim by hurting and then rewarding them, which of course confuses and gas-lights them. The goal is to make the victim as emotionally vulnerable, insecure and dependent on the abuser as possible. The end-game is called the 'final discard', when the abuser has no further use for the victim, and ends the relationship in the cruellest way possible. The final discard can take multiple different forms, eg the abuser packs their bags and leaves one day, hiring a removal van to take all the home contents they want, so the victim returns to the marital home to find it empty - and their partner gone forever, without even an explanation. The 'final discard' could mean the abuser calls off the wedding they know the victim is deeply invested in. It could even mean the abuser jilting the victim at the altar, to ensure the pain of public humiliation is added to the agony of rejection. Or indeed the abuser can simply tell the victim face to face the relationship is over - but whatever form the final discard takes, there will be a big element of sadistic cruelty involved. In some cases the final discard is literally the murder of the victim, by the abuser. That's similar to the way Arnold wanted his relationship with Emily to end. He spoke of a joint suicide - he clearly wanted her dead. And who's to say precisely what that would have meant? He may well have ended up surviving that supposed joint suicide - and lapping up the sympathy of Emily's friends, as he played the grieving widower at her funeral. Narcissistic abusers are very manipulative, and they enjoy nothing better than conning people they are wonderful, big-hearted human beings! It was a superbly plotted storyline. When Emily first discovers Arnold's bigamy deception, he gives her an explanation which is later proven to be a pack of lies. He tells Emily his wife left him after just 3 weeks of marriage. In a later episode after Arnold's death, his wife turns up at Emily's house, wanting a chat. The two women sit and talk in Emily's front room, and Mrs Swain tells Emily how the marriage to Arnold really ended - surprise, surprise, she didn't leave him at all, HE left her! And he did it in classic narcissistic abuser, 'final discard' style, jumping on a train without warning, while in her presence, and smiling at her as the carriage pulled away from the station. No explanation - not even goodbye, just a sly smile from the departing train, as her final, chilling memory of a cruel, abusive husband with a heart of solid ice.

You must be talking about actress Julie Goodyear, with your 'dating women' comment (she's bi-sexual in real life). No idea why you think she never married. @glamdolly30

Agreed, many people noticed that disastrous piece of mis-casting over the years! The actress who played Beattie Pearson (nee Tatlock), Gabrielle Daye, was born on 2nd October 1911. Actor Jack Howarth who played her father Albert Tatlock was born on 19th February 1896. So there were only around 15 years and 8 months between the TV father and daughter. The date of birth of the fictitious character Albert Tatlock was 10th August 1895 - so the writers made Uncle Albert a year older than the actor who played him. When you consider Albert joined up and fought during World War One - which ran from 1914 (when the character Albert Tatlock was 19), until 1918 - its unlikely he could have conceived Beattie till post-war in 1918, at the very earliest. I did some digging, and the character's back-story states Albert Tatlock married Bessie Vickery in 1919, and became a father post-war, as he settled back into civilian life. I'll say it was 'post war' - in fact his only child was born 15 years after the end of the First World War! What took Albert so long? The character Beattie Tatlock (later Pearson) was supposedly born on 21st August 1933 - making actress Gabrielle Daye almost 22 years too old to play her! So the writers really didn't think through the time-line, when they cast an actress who was born in 1911 - they should actually have cast someone at least 10 years younger than Gabrielle Daye! It wasn't as though Daye looked young for her age. As has been said before, Beattie looked far more like Uncle Albert's wife, than his daughter! And over the years the 15 year age difference between them got less and less, because she was very much a 'grannie' type.
