When Susan Baldwin says she may as well be married to Bluebeard, I was wishing she had been. Then he could have shut her in the cellar and given our ears a rest from her complaining and grating voice. On a brighter note, by late 1987 at least the Susan-Mike marriage was on its last legs.

Susan was dreadful, childish and unbearable. God knows what Mike was thinking when he married her. She was never happy, complaining about being regarded as the 'little woman' or a 'brood mare'. I got the impression that all the poor guy wanted was to be a father to a child, not half a dozen. She might not have been brought up by Ken, but she was definitely his daughter, self-righteous, never uncomplaining and far less impressive in reality than she was in her own head. Deidrie, as annoying as she was, didn't deserve to be lumbered with Ken, nor Mike with Susan.

I think Sally represents a model of rough working class upbringing by a violent drunkard father & a submissive brow beaten mother & a stack of oaffish brothers Brought up in this environment she would have learned early on how to protect herself & how to obtain what she needed to survive & advance herself. I knew someone like Sally from a similar family home background. She was very forward & sort of pushy & wanted to escape from her family & carve out a better future for herself. I admired her ambition to advance herself & how she learned early on, to use those persons & how to project herself In an energetic, willing & charming way, she swore shed never have the life her mother had & her poverty had made her keen & observant to any chance or opportunity. Others who didnt know her or her background called her pushy & a user & using her feminine attributes to get ahead. She said poverty & lack of anything worthwile in her life had made her keen & hungry to succeed. I thought she was a clever girl & even with a lack of decent education she cultivated her own learning by listening & copying others, buying books on self improvement & ideas on getting ahead. I was very fond of her, a tiny slip of a girl like Sally, she let me into her background & asked for my help & guidance when she grew to trust me, which was new to her as she'd never trusted anyone. She was so eager to learn, willing to work hard, had bundles of energy & was open to absorb any experiences or education to persue her life! Her humour was one of her best qualities which we cultivated & it was a pleasure to coach her & help her all i could because she was so grateful someone cared enough to help & guide her. She was just 17yrs then & by the time she was 22yrs she was assistant marketing manager. At 25yrs she was head of Marketing & Publicity! She improved in leaps & bounds & so keen like a sponge to absorb everything. Later when she became confident we smoothed down her rough edges & polished her personality And she became one of the best friends i had. Shes now married ( very well) had a family, started her own PR company, travelled around the world & achieved much Shes still a cheeky imp though😆 but tempered & its earned her great admiration. She always said it was her Hunger to build a better life which sharpened her determination to get ahead & she could twist others round her little finger & hustle like the best of them. But it was her charm, cheek, hoodwinking & cajoling with such Convincing abilities that kept her hunger keen & sharp. There arent many ive come across over the years since then, that were like my friend, most are lazy & think the world owes them They lack the hunger & sharp keeness, as the majority are spoiled brats & havent had the initiative to set about advancing & improving their life by hard work & willingness to learn. Weve brought up a generation of slobs & malcontents these days who want want want without any effort or hunger to lift themselves up the ladder of success. We need more "Sallys" today They are a dying breed. Regards 🇬🇧👧

Well, perhaps it's more helpful to focus on what's being expressed rather than how it's being communicated. The unsuitability of Mike and Susan's marriage is signalled disaster from the day it happened. I can't believe they'd involve Mike in such a weak, ridiculous storyline. A girl of 21 married a man over 25 years older than him. It's absurd. I don't think the acting ability of the woman playing Susan is an issue here, it's the bad planning and writing,
