Those scenes between Stan and Hilda are masterpieces of writing, direction and acting. Especially Hilda's reaction when she realises Stan was scared to tell her about his health - a perfect depiction of a marriage which seems fragile on the surface but has such love and strength underneath. And the beautifully wise way Eddie saved them - just beautiful.

The actor playing stan Was very unwell in these scenes. They tried to keep Him as long as possible, same with Berts character, he’d had a stroke too. I don’t think Jean Alexander wanted to continue once Stan left , it wasn’t the same for her. They were truly a double act in that. Brilliant too.

Difficult to watch the scenes with Peter Dudley, he's obviously unwell. I'm sure he's giving his best to the show but his acting seems quite monotonous. No doubt during this time he was struggling on, looking forward to getting better but later that year he was dead. Around 37:50, Brian is commenting how much the accident has affected Bert and how he isn't the same. They are writing dialogue to try and explain his lifeless performance, but I don't think he's acting. He is living a similar part in real life to the character he's playing

I love all these episodes and keep going back to them, this means I don't get enough work done, but this is such treasure. I was a child during this period, and though I saw the odd episode, I didn't know the characters. Loads are fascinating, and all are very well acted, but I can't like Emily Bishop and all credit to Eileen Derbyshire for that. Emily is so annoyingly prissy, precious and judgemental with a superiority complex similar to Ken, the local part-time intellectual and full-time bore. Why are they still there? A former shop assistant - who looked down on Mavis - and teacher, could surely have moved on from the back streets. They stayed, but how did they have any friends among their neighbours?
