QMAG owns one of the largest deposits of cryptocrystalline magnesite in the world. This valuable ore body stretches over 30 kilometres and has a life of more than 100 years, fuelling growth and success for QMAG customers worldwide, and delivering a consistent and steady supply for uninterrupted production, customised solutions tailored to your specific needs, and long-term availability to keep your processes running smoothly.
We hold one of the world's largest cryptocrystalline magnesite deposits. The superior characteristics of this is its reactivity due to the greater surface area of our magnesite. It forms as nodules in the black soil, so we don't need drill and blast. We start with the removal of the topsoil. We stockpile that safely for rehabilitation.
Then we'll take scrapers for a few overburden passes, which are then followed by truck shovel. We'll remove the overburden and then get to the ore, ensuring the top of ore is always cleaned up in preparation for mining. We'll mine the ore and take it over to our processing plant at KG1 for the next step of the process.
Once the product's mined, we process it through the plant and then goes to a benefication plant for grading. Once it's graded and sized, lands on our final product pads, then we load it into trucks and the trucks then bring them to Parkhurst for further processing. Sustainability is important to QMAG for the longevity of the product. Once we've mined an area, we put our tailings back into the empty void. Once that's formed, we then reclaim it by putting a topsoil back over and revegetate it and return it back to a natural state.
The magnesite that comes from the mine is put through our multi hearth furnaces. It takes about two hours to go through. It's a roundabout 1,000 degrees. Our calcined material goes through a series of screens, then it goes into holding bins based on chemistry. We make our deadburnt material, it's through a vertical shaft kiln. That actually cooks our material up to 2,000 degrees, and it's primarily used for the steel and cement refractory brick industry. Our electrofused magnesia is produced by three electric arc furnaces. They fuse up to 3,000 degrees.
Our processes have changed through the years, and that is to improve the quality and improve the way we work, especially when it comes to safety.
QMAG's current production capacity at the Parkhurst plant is 300,000 tons of caustic calcined magnesia. The future expansion plans for the plant are to increase our milling capacity to better serve some of our growing markets.
We also have recently commissioned two new container tilter facilities that will help us to facilitate production for major nickel producers in the Asia-Pacific region. QMAG is continually working to improve its efficiencies. We're looking towards the future and looking at more sustainable initiatives such as solar power and alternative fuels.
As it stands today, we ship to 25 countries on 6 continents and around 125 cities. Ultimately, our goal is to deliver to our customer in the time that they want it, and we always work to make sure that our customer is happy with the service that we provide.
Consistency, quality, and reliable performance is critical to our customer's success. Some of our customers have had relationships with us measured in decades. That means that they view us as a trustworthy partner.
QMAG. We create solutions to make a sustainable difference.
