Nice job Joe. As a designer, I can add some true but probably useless information. We define the pilot's eye position during the initial layout of a new aircraft. We then do all of the design of the instrument panels, Windscreen edges, visibility polar graphs and many other things with respect to that very special "Pilot's Eye Position". None of that is worth a red cent if the pilot does not sit so that his eyes are located at the precise spot. Many of the older aircraft did not include such indicators and most of the pilot's never sat in the right "safest" spot. Adding the indicators and proper training has corrected that problem. We define the point as being right smack between the eyes and several inches (yes I am American) back into the pilot's head at the retinal plane. So if you are sitting at the right spot, the Pilot's eye point is actually inside your head.

I was a design engineer. I worked Liaison Engineering to start on the Orbiter and the KC-10. I ended up a Lofter. I created the aero shapes for the vehicles on the computer back when computers were not used for that. I have since designed the shapes of the Learjet Model 60 and Model 45 for Lear and the Hawker Horizon for Beechcraft. To do that, I had to start with the basic aircraft layout and then develop the final shapes. My specialty was airfoils.

@@flywithcaptainjoe Dear Joe, can I ask a unrelated question? When a new pilot interviews for a job at a new company, are questions about smoking habits included? I am an avid non-smoker myself. Being in the air for hours at a time doesn't give smokers a lot of time for a smoke break. So, are they asked about it?

I'm so happy I stumbled upon this channel! I am aspiring to become a pilot, but really worried if any commercial airline will hire me as I'm just 5ft tall. I'm still completing my bachelors in engineering, and then planning to train to get cpl. Aviation school is expensive though, and it would be such a waste if I can't get any jobs after. Can you please give me any advice on this? Thanks a lot! :)

I am saving this series for my Star Citizen gaming friends. This is one of the best ergonomics vblogs I have seen in terms of exact hand control placement to the set. Should help some of us when we are building our PC gaming cockpit gaming rigs. A hand grabbing a control stick at even the slightest wrong angle screws up your dog fighting abilities big time. First thing I tell all flight or space sim gamers is to take your throttle and stick off the desk and screw them firmly by the chairs armrests until their hands grab the controls at the exact right angle. I also use an F-22 Raptor or F-16 Falcons cockpit layout for placement of the controls relative to the gaming seat.

Dear Captain Joe, when a pilot becomes captain from first officer, the relative positions of lots of controls (including the most important side stick and throttle lever) switches. How much time it takes (on average) in the simulator to get habituated with this change?

some aircraft have something called a WOW Sensor (Weight on Wheels), it does several jobs like starting and stopping the block flight timer but also prevents nincompoops from raising the gear on the ground. I have seen a video of a Sukhoi fighter jet land whilst the gear was in the process of being retracted. Ultimately that ended up as an unsurprising mess.

This is a very interesting video and I had a few questions about it. First, should you keep your head facing forwards when calibrating the seat position, and only look at the position indicator by turning your eyes? Or can you turn your head? After all, turning your head moves your eyes as well, since the pivoting point is at the neck. Or is this difference small enough to not matter? Second, does it matter which eye you use for the calibration? Depending on which eye you use, you'd get slightly different position of the seat. Do you use your dominant eye (whichever it is) on both left and right seat, or is the cockpit designed for people with dominant right eye, or is the difference small enough that it doesn't matter?
