The church we see today was begun at the end of the fourteenth century but its construction must have had a decisive impulse under the guidance of Sant'Antonino Pierozzi, rector from 1418 to 1421, although we know that in 1433 it is not yet finished. However, it must have been finished shortly after, since in 1438 both Angelico and Sassetta had finished their altarpieces destined for the church. The external aspect of the church still shows a late Gothic style, combined with some elements that already herald the Renaissance. In the lunette of the portal is the important, albeit deteriorated by time, fresco with the Madonna and Child between Saints Dominic and Peter martyr and the four Evangelists by Beato Angelico. The interior of the church is full of works of art. The nave has six seventeenth-century stone side altars, all made to a design by the Cortonese architect Ascanio Covatti. At the beginning of the nave, on the right, is the most important of the fragments of frescoes attributed to Bartolomeo della Gatta with San Rocco, which may perhaps be placed between 1470 and 1480. In the main apsidal chapel there is a grandiose polyptych by Lorenzo di Niccolò which depicts the Coronation of the Virgin with Angels and Saints. The polyptych, from the early fifteenth century, was not made either for this church or for Cortona but was donated in 1440 by Cosimo the Elder and Lorenzo to repair the failure by Angelico to make the altarpiece for the main altar.
Under the main altar is the body of the Dominican Blessed Pietro Capucci. In the left apsidal chapel there is a table with the Madonna and Child with Saints by Luca Signorelli, from 1515. At the altars of the left side of the nave are an Assumption of the Virgin by Palma il Giovane, a Circumcision by Passignano and the Disputa di Santa Catherine of Alexandria by Andrea Commodi (1603).
