@ggh546 I think it was in the 7th Season when Cliff was going to a jazz auction benefitting the UNCF. He was competing against his friend, Dr. Harmon, who came to the Huxtable residence on the morning of the auction. Said Cliff, "We just signed four checks to send kids to college. We happen to BE the United Negro College Fund."

This attitude epitomized the "must go to college" attitude in the late 80s that grew in the 90s and 2000s. Only difference is that Denise's parents paid for her college tuition, room, and board. In reality, it wasn't long after that the student loan debt crisis started when children were taking out big buck student loans as if it were some kind of American obligation to do so because you had to go college. Truth is, most were not ready, not qualified, or just had no business being there.

Denise's biggest problem was that she had too much freedom at Hillman. Nobody told her to get up, do her laundry, do her papers on time, etc. I wish the folks or even the High School Teachers warned the Kids about how at College, you are responsible for your life academically and personally. Clair should have made Denise do her Laundry, learn to budget. During my high school years, I took classes for a dual diploma so I could go to any kind of school I pleased, whether it was college or a trade school. I enrolled in an esthetician program after graduation and I loved it, but when the economy bottomed out during 2008, I had to rethink about what to do with my life because everybody was cutting corners and didn't seem interested in getting facials, waxing, spa treatments, etc. However, I still keep my esthetics license updated whenever necessary and still take classes to maintain it to this day. But then I enrolled in a patient care technician program and got a job at a retirement community my great grandma lived in when I was little and have been at that job going on thirteen years now as a certified nursing assistant and a certified medication aide. The point I'm trying to make is even if you don't go to college, it's not a door that you've missed. Don't worry because other doors and windows will open up if a door closes. Keep on keeping on.

Seeing a lot of comments here about Denise being stupid and lazy which I can't agree with. College isn't really a measure of intelligence so much as it's a measure of discipline and self-control. Most kids who go are living away from home for the first time so they have no one to keep them on track, no parents, no teachers. The only way anyone survives that environment is if they have the discipline to be responsible and take care of things themselves, just like Clair says, "they treat you like an adult and expect you to take care of things yourself" (not exact quote). I had a roommate in college who had the same GPA as me but she partied constantly her freshman year, and I do mean constantly, she had friends from high school but her parents lived several states away so she had no one to keep her in check. The biggest challenge in college is having the motivation and drive to stay on track when you have no parents around to keep you in line and no teachers who will look after you because college professors generally won't care less if you're not doing the work, you're the one paying to be there. Denise didn't need smarts, she needed focus.

You reduce college students to a tiny proportion of society. I'm a college lecturer and I see very few students like Denise. The vast majority had to work really hard to get there and they want to invest in the process. Parents who make no demands on their kids to prep them for adult life have let them down. She is lazy and self absorbed but she's also a fictional creation.

By the time Theo was born (the 3rd oldest), they became better and better at parenting. Since Rudy and Vanessa were the youngest, it became very difficult for them to get away with anything as they've already seen the same tricks from the older kids.

is it just me or is Denise reading off cue cards set up around the set like her eyes are focused on reading lines
@FlutterMouse

dipsettopnotch That's possible. Lisa Bonet had a habit of being a bit of a Diva. She probably didn't try that hard to memorize her lines.

It's you. She's looking around because her character is supposed to be uncomfortable in this situation. When she's looking down, she's not reading something but attempting to portray shame.

@@musicaltheatergeek79 Also, around the time of her Hillman student days, they began to portray her as an airhead and irresponsible adult...So that they could start her college drop out storyline and smoothly “write her off to Africa” so she could take her real life hiatus from the show.So I think it’s also air-headed and detached mannerisms she’s purposely infusing into the character to portray it realistically.

Gorgeous I give her props, though - she staked out on her own and did her own thing, and Cosby “initially” gave his blessing for Angel Heart - until he saw the film’s content “later”.

@@MikeLera Yeah Cosby didn't see how she could stay on the Cosby show after that movie and he offered her the leading role in A Different World and she left that show after having a baby.

I wonder why Denise didn't speak to Cosby for 30 years after the show ended. I guess by now every one can suspect what was the reason.

Well Cosby's crimes notwithstanding, behind the scenes documentaries talk about how Lisa was difficult on set as well. She was flaky, wouldn't show up on time and was sometimes hostile to other cast mates. Adding to the drama, Lisa was doing other off show antics that was tarnishing the wholesome image of the show, which the producers warned her not to do. I get it, she's her own person, she should do what she wants. But the show was her primary job at the time, so it shouldn't a surprise when they were less than warm to her when it came to giving her screen time. And then she got pregnant when she was really young which threw a huge wrench into production because they couldn't have a pregnant kid that was unmarried on the show. But even still, Cosby, instead of firing her, GAVE her her own show in A Different World. She was the STAR of her own show! And then I think after one or two seasons she was still being difficult and so they wrote her out. So I think she had issues with Cosby before all of the allegations and arrests came out. I don't know what, but I think she's much like the character on the show and just didn't think they were at fault for anything.
