In this highlights video, COSI's Steve Whitt conducts a demonstration of radioactive half-life with attendees at COSI's free Teacher Open House on Saturday, October 30, 2010.
Here Steve uses a Geiger counter and a laptop computer to graph the decay of a sample of radioactive barium in real time. The laptop graph's red line tracks the barium's rapid decay. Unstable barium-137m is giving off a gamma ray to become stable barium-137. This is an example of a decay that doesn't change the identity of the product, as a gamma ray has neither mass nor electric charge.
