from the original lovecraft mythos, the Shambler isn't so much a "god" as it is an interdimensional predator, a great white shark that swims through the borders between reality that snaps at whatever fleshy thing it delves close to.

Well, as far as I understand... is that everytime you kill the Heart of Darkness, it's not that time resets. It's that your next bloodline will need to come to the Estate and cleanse the land once again and stop the Heart of Darkness. It's not much as stalemate as is maintaining an eternal vigil. Now, what happen with you as a character is shown. Just like the Ancestor, you commit suicide right after writting a letter to your next descendant. Maybe after seeing the Darkest Dungeon and witnessing the Heart of Darkness, you went mad or at least had a mental breakdown that crippled you, so you choosed to end it.

It's purposely vague as to what happens at the end. In an interview the Devs even said they left it that way so they don't write themselves into a corner with the sequel. The reason I choose to believe in the Time-Loop Ending is because of what we see on the Old Road in Stygian/Bloodmoon. They had to have had a reason for putting that there, maybe as a way to signal to the player, "You have done this before."

I respectfully disagree with this, I think it's as close at it gets in this video. Time is an endless cycle: this ties together so well with the overall theme of DD. We struggle over and over again, to what end? That's a recurring thought for me at least. The gameplay loop is exactly the same throughout the game just with variations. There is nothing new to learn or realise, there's just the never ending grind. The sleeper fits perfectly into this theme as well, I think the sleeper is just like the heart. The only difference being that the scope is smaller, the cycle which its events repeats is just shorter. To draw a parallel to real life, it can be quite profound. It could really be that life and time works just like this. It's either bleak or hopeful, depending on how you view it. Anyway I find the ideas and themes presented in DD ties well together with some interesting religious/philosophical ideas like pantheism, reincarnation, cosmic nihilism. It really is a well thought out game. my 2 cents

My thought is that there is no time loop. There is no need. The naturally maintained cycle is enough. All concerned are satisfied with the repeating series events that goes on. Well, not the mortals, but they don't matter, do they?

I'd argue that you shouldn't have excluded the Swinefolk. While their physical forms were created by the Ancestor, it seems clear that he did summon the spirits inside them from... *Somewhere* else.

I always thought that the sleeper can manipulate time and space only where the crystals are. That would explain why he cant really influence the world beyond farmstead, and why the thing from the stars comes back each time we kill it. Maybe the sleepers has more places he can control(the jeweler kinda proves that), and his power is much bigger than we realize. The thing from the stars could be sleepers minion, who is looking for a place where it can spread more crystals(the thing/s actually can do that)and give the sleeper a bigger area to control. That was just my head cannon almost for the entire time playing CoM. And also, great videos! I never thought we would get a dd lore channel, but now its here, and its better than I ever expected

It's a good video and lore theory! I believe the ending represents the multi-generational aspect that you discussed as an option, not that a "god" resets time. This is for two main reasons. 1. The "ancestor" has no name, meaning that it has no specific "family". All humanity is the "family". The quote, "Ruin has come to our family" is the first line we hear at the start and last line we hear at the ending. At first we (the player) think it is means our specific family. But at the end, when we realize the magnitude of the monster, we realize that ruin has come to all the "family" of man. Even if we defeat the evil, humanity will again become evil and arouse the heart of darkness. A new generation must arise again to defeat it. 2. As you start NG+, their is a ghost that appeared at the end of the game telling you to go back. This is your ancestors telling you to go back and just accept the inevitable fate of the world. You see, the evil of man is MEANT to awake the heart; this is man's purpose. Man was created evil, meant to feed the energies of a gestating "god" (the name of a powerful being beyond our comprehension). By "defeating" the game, we forestall birth of a new greater being and our rebelling against man's purpose. The ending is in many ways, turning the traditiona view of good and evil on its head. Evil is what man is meant to do to feed the heart of the world, hence "good". And by doing good, man is actually rebelling against our purpose and our "god", hense "evil". The view of the game is that eventually evil will overtake and destroy the world and struggle is frutile...for that I say, "Not today!"

My interpretation is that the resetting of our progress is the heart in its throes of defeat, wrecking shit. We die, the hamlet is ruined, and the heart goes dormant, gathering strength again. But it will eventually touch the mind of another who will feed it and humanity will have to stand against it once more. Perhaps the enemies will be different, perhaps the people and weapons used to fight or the religions and methods, whether steel and faith or gunpowder and armor, the cycle will continue until it succeeds. Essentially a stalemate like you said without the time manipulation

You can't. That is the reason why so many fall to its influence. In despair, realizing all that can be done is buy an unknown amount of extra time, they allow the heart to seap into them. The heart is truly immortal. It cannot be killed, just put back to sleep. And one day it will awaken. One day it will all end. This is consistent with true cosmic horror. That the greater powers don't care about us even when they are aware we are there. Maybe just toy with us out of idle curiosity. Let us go on our way if we amuse it sufficiently.

I finally finished the game on darkest, I just beat both countess and court guardian tonight and the journey getting there was quite the ride that I am honestly proud that took and despite my struggles finally finished and in no small part thanks to watching your videos inspiring me to answer the call to the letter once again and this time victorious. So once again even though I’ve said this countless times thank you. I do want to give my two cents on the heart’s ability to turn back time. I do believe there is credence to that idea not only because of how the ending presents it but also to the particular enemy in the game, the collector and heads of those he has with him. The way the collector fight goes it almost feels like a reflection of how we as the character play commanding our troops in battle almost as he is or was like us. I propose that the collector is the heir in a timeline where we failed to stop the heart this feels proven further by the fact that he possess heads of what would be the names of the characters who come to the hamlet the most famous among them that everyone knows, Dismas. Perhaps it’s just an the hearts irony to put us up against a reflection of ourselves to demoralize us and that the names are just a coincidence but I think not. To be honest despite the heart winning on Stygian mode it can be said the fact of us deleting the save file and starting a new run is synonymous to us reversing time therefore the heart doesn’t win and the true ending being the fact we win on Stygian and that the heart is finally beaten once and for all. Maybe that’s thinking too much into it since I’m trying to make sense of a system mechanic but that’s how it works in my brain. In this regard the collector would be the ghost of the heir or ourselves coming to haunt us and perhaps a reminder as well as a warning for us to simply stop playing into the heart’s hands or perhaps to make us suffer the same fate he did in our previous life… Thank you once again for inspiring me to finally finish this hard but amazing game I hope to see more of your content in the future more so when DD2 comes out, take care.

There’s a reason conventional magic doesn’t exist in this universe. I say that because I run a normal 5e campaign in the hamlet, and cosmic horror doesn’t really work well when things like wish, which just… you know, defy reality, exist. All I’m saying is that the Heart would be a lot less scary with fireball.

A bit late, but I feel as though the devs have written themselves into a corner with the ancient beings, mostly due to the fact that the power level of one, or in thus case of two entities is too great compared to any other within their immediate vicinity, that would either require and opposing, equal force to balance it, or require the entity itself to be limited by a certain factor, while for the Sleeper there is technically no limiter, it's small scope of action kind of acts like one, for the Heart however, there are no limiters or opposing forces, yeah a long lived hero become essentially a demi god, much like in all other rpgs, but the Heart's power is, as described by the Ancestor, too great, so leaving it extremely vague, to the point where calling this an open-ended close to a story is a stretch is acceptable in order for a sequel to release, hopefully we get some more information on the greater universe in DD2, really excited

In my minds eye I thought if I trained enough hero's that the hamlet would be protected by outside forces and that is all that mattered to me. Plus why would I want a dank crumbling estate. The line between outer gods and great old ones is more about convenience than accuracy. Outer gods tend to be more overtly powerful, but limited by wards or obscure universal laws. Great Old Ones are less powerful, but “small” enough to occasionally interact with humanity in a more personal way. As far as we’re concerned, it’s a distinction without a difference. They see us the way we see insects or bacteria: sometimes tools or nuisances, but nothing with agency or a way of engaging them as peers. It’s not that they hate us. It’s just that on a cosmic scale, we mean nothing. The ending took me back to the narrator’s epiphany at the end of Mountains of Madness: that far from being unique or consequential, terrestrial life is just an unintended byproduct of the experiments of an alien race. The hallucinations just show us the truth: we aren’t separate from the whole because we’re mere byproducts of the Heart, or something equivalent. Chemical runoff that blundered its way toward sentience. An indifferent cosmos is so much scarier than one that hates us.
