music: Rhyming Psalters (1685) by Simeon Polotskyi
performance: Choir Chapel Pochaina NaUKMA, Yuriy Alzhnev
historical background: ancient banquet cant of the 17th century. "Drink, brothers, drink" is a secular parody of the spiritual cant from "Rhyming Psalter" (1685) by Simeon Polotskyi. It was a very bold for its time poetic version of biblical texts, which became very popular in the Baroque era. This was done so that the psalms could be more easily adapted for singing in the temple, and in such an adaptation a certain poetic freedom was allowed with respect to the canonical text. Most often, they were created by traveling monks or sailors, whose names remain unknown. Thus, based on the verses of the 125th Psalm, a banquet chant was created by an unknown author from the Hetman region:
Drink, brothers, drink, but do not pour on the ground,
Get drunk all drunk - don't be stubborn,
Have fun, dance
Amuse each other.
