I agree with the others who commented. You are a true artist in so many unique ways. It's not all about pleasing others and giving them what they want, it's more about showing and sharing the world, your world, through your artistic eyes, which makes your videos so uniquely special, and quite interestingly different than any other gardening channel. You have a lot to offer, and it's best to just be yourself. You may not always know what a difference you make, although I have no doubt that you and your ways will affect people and cause them to think, grow and change, slowly and surely.

THANK YOU for this beautiful tour, and for reminding me that a garden takes about a decade to reach maturity. My Square Spiral garden is in its 5th year in 2022 and just starting to fill out. My niagara grapes are in their 5th year now and did produce some last year. My gladioli and strawberry patch are about 3 years old , the strawberries produced with wild abundance last year and are trampling nearly everything in their path. :D I transplanted some oxeye daisies last year. Lavender is in its second year - French lavender seems to thrive here in TN where all others died. Rosemary is in its 4th year but always struggling. I hope the fennel I planted last year survives.

I’m new to your channel and I realize this request for feedback is a few months old. I did have an idea: I’m very interested in the way you talk about the design elements of a beautiful, interesting, intriguing garden. I would love to see you walk through other gardens and point out the design elements that work well and why they work -layout, materials, plant choices, sound, etc. The way you tie in art and history and a sense of place into gardens makes a lot of sense to me. My goal would be to try to take that learning to my own backyard garden design. I really enjoy seeing your own gardens and I especially appreciate the perspective of how they mature over time. In addition to that I’d also love to hear your thoughts on other either public or private parks and gardens. Maybe, “here is a spot that I love and let me tell you why it works and what I see happening here.”

I wish I could make those complex videos a bit more often (at least once a month) but I may have to do them a bit shorter, and still hold on to the relaxing pace. This was fun to see this style of video from you! People seem to stay engaged well with the POV format. As for feedback, you can guarantee I'm going to watch anything you publish. It seems like many of your viewers would agree with me on that. You consistently produce outstanding content, whether it's 10 mins. or an hour long. The documentaries have been mind-blowing, but I can only imagine how burned out you might feel when you've been working on one for such a long time. If that's the case, then shorter episodes could ease the stress. Mental health is important, too! Maybe you could break things up into a miniseries for each vegetable, with each episode focusing on one or two aspects or a historical narrative for that veggie. "The Wild World of Maize: 4-part mini-doc series," that kind of thing. That may help the algorithm, searchability and make it easier for you to manage. But really, just do what works best for you and we'll all be here watching no matter what.
@suburbanhomestead
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Greg. I do like the idea of breaking the episode into mini-series, as long as I have a complete story within each one. I feel like people liked the format, it is just that 1 hour is a lot to ask when delving into a vegetable, unless the story evolved into something very impactful. That is just not the case with most veggies, so a shorter run time may be best, as long as I consolidate the info and keep a good pace.

I, for one, could never keep up with a daily/weekly youtube channel, but even a summary of the season later in the year can be both enjoyable and helpful. I tend to miss stuff during the summer, being so busy in my own garden ... but, during the winter, as I get into the nitty gritty planning for next season, it is helpful to be able to watch how others fared the previous season. YOU, in particular, have been the inspiration for many of my gardening practices today ... Alright this may be a long comment so bear with me lol you asked for my opinion and I'm happy to oblige! To give you a reference, KZitem let me know you exsited back when you made the "Crazy New Tomato Growing in my Garden..." video which was three years ago and I've been watching ever since. What made me stay was how unique you were from the rest of the gardeners that I've subcribed to and watched on this platform, and if I could describe you to a stranger I would tell them it was like time traveling back in time and watching someone tend to their plot from another era. It's just the way you speak and carry yourself, your sense of fashion, the way you upkeep you're home and your choice of recipes from the food growing out of your garden that give me thoes vibes and I'm all here for it.. I've convinced myself that I've found a gem and I feel blessed! I watched you in the beginning (not only because of what I already mentioned above) because you gave me inspiration to keep going in my own garden. I was about to give up because I was facing too many mold problem and bug issues and the hard work that I've created to just all be destroyed made me sad.. But seeing you go through it too didn't make me feel alone, and the way you addressed the issues with such a calm manner gave me hope and I told myself well if he could do it then so can I! All the content you produce.. The mini documentaries, the history and tips on certain vegetables, the recipes, you're music and just updates on your garden are gold because you're in them. YOU and your brilliant mind is what makes this so patiable, informative and entertaining and I'm sure the rest of your subscribers are thinking it too. So keep the videos coming whatever it is, I'm willing to be patient and wait until the next time you upload because I know they will be worth it.

I'm with you with the longer format videos, especially when the story demands it. KZitem also seems to favor long format if they truly capture's people's attention. So I think I need to keep in mind the narrative. I personally feel that the beet video had the most enthralling storyline, do you agree? Although I like the cucumber video in so far as it touches on bigger themes in life. I might do smaller complete stories and a few longer ones as you suggest. It is just that when you commit to doing something massive like the cucumber video it takes all available time and mental bandwidth to produce "social media ready" short videos. As far as youtube shorts, I don't know if I see much use in them for what I do. Maybe short tips, but it just doesn't appeal to me personally. Sneak peeks may be something to try to build buzz. Thanks for taking your time to bounce off the ideas.

Hi Siloe: I pondered your question and feel that there are so many ways to approach the response. Ask 90k people and you'll drive yourself to creative ruination. But, in the spirit of support, here is my two cents. There are many types of storytellers, especially in gardening. To me, creators are like writers. There are some that focus on "how-to" guides, some that sell the dream like in romance tomes and others that ask you to go on a journey diving deeper in a philosophical sense. I've always seen your videos as the latter. Not everyone can be Danielle Steele. Not everyone can be F. Scott Fitzgerald. Each has it's place. If you are going for numbers, do the former. If you are going for artistry, do the latter. I like both styles of your videos. Sometimes I need a reference manual, other times I want a quick beach read and sometimes I want to curl up with War and Peace. I don't expect all three to come from the same author. You can't be all things to all people. Focus on the stories you want to tell in your own very unique style. Hope this helps...but I won't be surprised if you think "what the what?...", lol.

You comment is especially elucidating. No wonder you are named Sofia. You hit it in the nail. I love the latter, and it is what I strive for, I might mold it slightly just so it can read a bit more people. I'm not looking for millions, just something that will sustain my video making addiction. :-)

Starting from the end, I personally don't find anything that needs to be changed in your format. I've watched countless gardening/agri/horti videos, and honestly....not everyone who has access to a cam and internet should be posting. I liked the beet video a lot - at least it really stuck with me - and some tidbits/facts have really made their way into my brain from your videos this year. I enjoy the history/societal impact aspects of these videos the most. It is good to see the growing side of things, especially if someone has not grown that vegetable before, but sometimes you seem to be having less fun on that end (maybe too critical about how things are progressing for my taste). The visuals are clearly amazing and take a lot of effort, but I don't need them to be that elaborate. If they make you happy, then that's good. Overall the quality is beyond what I might expect from a TV series. I gravitate to watching videos that are someone who's passionate about plants walking around their garden, so your recent videos are a little out of my comfort zone but they are clearly a feat and deserve respect.

Thanks Jenny for the sincere feedback. I think what you said about wanting to watch a person who is passionate about plants walking around the garden is what makes a good chunk of people follow gardening youtube channels. I don't know how much my personality fits with that style (I did it a bit in this video as a test). I myself am more interested in the big picture stories. I may tone down the visual complexity a bit for practical reasons but I hope to still build engaging stories. I think that the story and personality is what keeps people glued to videos anyways. Thanks again for the honest response.

Hey there! I just watched this and the cucumber video and both are amazing. I love to see the creativity in your videos. You create beautiful things! I have a few channels that I’ve watched faithfully over the years and I’m the type of person that loves origins stories, so I’ll get hooked on a channel and then go back to the beginning and watch all or many of the videos. I’ve realized that I do this because I love to see the way people grow and change. I love to understand where a person is coming from…and I also go back to the beginning because I enjoy whatever topic it is they’re talking about. The topic becomes secondary, though. I find the person because of the topic, but then I stay because of the person because THEY are the most interesting part of the story. While I love learning the history and all of that, I initially found your channel looking up gardening videos, but I stayed because I wanted to know more about the lifestyle and garden of a man that wears linens, straw hats, and suspenders and creates beautifully haunting music with his wife/sister/?? I love your videos, but I sometimes feel that you forget to tell the story of yourself-in the end, anyone can create a video about any vegetable, but YOU’re the most interesting part of the video. I don’t mean to downplay your cinematic work, but for me, more of your storyline is missing and I think that’s what keeps people coming back. We want to know what you’re up to and excited to see when the next video comes out. I’ve also missed seeing regular progress vids on your garden. The planting and harvesting, etc., is always motivating and interesting to me. I love your videos. The imagery is incredible and I’ve truly never found another youtube channel like yours. Your personality is engaging, your home is lovely, and you clearly having great storytelling abilities. However you proceed, I wish you the best of luck and definitely will enjoy continuing along with you for the ride! I hope my comments were helpful in some way and constructive because I wrote them with good intent and wouldn’t want you to think otherwise 😊

Thank you so much for the thoughtful response. I can sense that you are truly coming from a caring place with the feedback. I think your assessment is 100% correct. Here is the thing, I personally don’t have that social charismatic personality, (the X factor) that attracts a wide range of people. My life is quite uneventful as well, so I’m 100% sure people would not be interested in much beyond what I already share. I also am not sure how comfortable I would be to share more than I already do. I also don’t have the gift of gab, of keeping up with mainstream conversations and I speak rather slowly. Ultimately people want to be entertained. I think the latest format is the most engaging so far, but because I changed formats over a long period of time, old subscribers just forgot about the channel once what they initially found to be interesting either changed or wasn’t relevant for them anymore. That is also how the algorithm prioritizes exposure lately, showing you videos from the channels you’ve recently watched the most.

I love both your older videos and the newer documentary style videos. Learning about veggies from your in-depth videos has been a joy and absolutely fascinating. But, I also love the shorter videos showing how you develop your garden. Your love of gardening is contagious and the joy gardening gives you is apparently in everything you make, whether it be because of the hard work you put into a long video or the love you put into making a recipe with your harvest. As for practicality ... well, there are a million gardening how-to channels all focused on quick and practical information. While I appreciate it when you give direction about how to best grow certain seeds, I also want to see the magic, joy and wildness. It's like a cottage garden - there's a foundation of practicality, but the results are a breath taking wilderness. All that said, if I had to choose (i.e., you were only willing to do one or the other), the longer documentary style videos are stunning and captivating. Is it possible to mix things up a bit? Either do a mix of the documentary style videos and garden updates? Or, even do a mix in terms of how in-depth you are (i.e., shorter educational videos)? Either way, I'll keep watching. I don't have a garden (apartment dweller without a balcony) and it brings me so much joy when I can live vicariously through you. You make gardening seem both magical and attainable, which gives me hope for when I'm finally able to have a balcony or outdoor space.

I love your cottage style garden. Everytime your thumbnail is a lush cottage garden I click to watch. Honestly, I didn’t care much for the vegetable history videos. I watched one, and I saw how much thought and work you put in it, but it’s just not relatable for my daily life. Im not saying all these to put you down or make you feel bad. Im saying this because you asked for a feedback and I want to give you an honest one. As a subscriber, what I would love to see from your channel other than your lovely garden is your greenhouse, you making your lovely trellises that look like victorian cages, the beautiful birdhouses. I guess the garden as a SPACE, not singling out every plant. You seem to be great at building things, too, and everytime I watch your videos and I see some of the structures I get interested and want to see how you made them for inspiration in my own garden. Good luck to your channel and Im rooting for you!

Thank you for the honest feedback. It is precisely what I need to gauge interest. We end up only reading mostly positive reactions when a video is posted, so it leads to confirmation bias. Your comment is not mean at all. It is true. I recognize that different content appeals to different people. Just because I spent a lot of time on a video doesn’t mean it will appeal to all. The sad thing is that There may be people out there who would absolutely love to watch the vegetable history videos, but because the way the algorithm work, they will never see it as a suggestion. That’s because whenever a channel releases a video, it is only shown to other audiences when the subscribers show enough interest in it first. If a large enough fraction of the subs are not interested the video is buried in obscurity, even if objectively it is a stellar production for someone else. As you can see finding subjects that interest a majority of ones channel can be quite challenging to near impossible. If enough videos are released that don’t appeal to a large enough section of the subs, the channel starts dying. That leads creators like me to just give up. I got my subscribers slowly, so I picked up a wide range of people with diverse interests. That is why it has been especially hard for my videos to gain traction. That is just reality. Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving your comment. I’m thinking of doing a few videos on garden design in the future, so be in the lookout, in between the vegetable history ones.

Love your content. I would like to change my large 1/2 acer lawn to a cottage garden. I started about three years ago. I have a long way to go. I would like to move in the direction of native and pollinator. What books would you recommend?

Siloe, your artistic approach works for me 100% No matter the format, your videos entertain, educate, inform and calm down. Perhaps introduce a few long term permaculture principals? But I think you need a life partner in your homestead. Someone to share the workload and physically experience all the love you give. You are very handsome. Surely an eligible gentleman has eyes for you. I know this is personal - but ever since you made the video with the puppets, I have been rooting for someone special in your life.

I really enjoyed this video Siloe, that is one beautiful cottage garden! I much prefer your older shorter videos to the newer animated productions. Im not saying I didnt enjoy them but I do feel they tend to provide details I personally am not too interested in (historically and culturally) maybe less of this and more of the actual process and your results would be better content for me. Id really like it if you can do some individual flowers from seed videos as Im still learning about them :) Having said all this, basically I want more Siloe even if it means less bombastic productions! However, I think the best is for you to follow your heart, irrelevant of what people want because that is what matters most.

Thanks Karl, my friend. I'm glad you have enjoyed the video and thank you for giving me your unvarnished reaction. I will probably try to do a bit shorter videos, perhaps more often, balancing the story. Or maybe do the more elaborate ones here and there. Hope your balcony garden is still surviving despite all the heat challenges.

I love how your poetic nature finds expression in so many ways! Thanks for sharing them with us. I agree with other commenters - I like both the long stories with historical backgrounds, and the shorter videos as well. Your creativity shows through in all of them, and I'm happy to watch anything you make!
