They were so close to pulling off the legendary one wing landing. When I was a child, I was a passenger on a few occasions, in a sea-plane piloted by one of the RNZAF pilots that attacked Rabul BEFORE this attack on the Japanese cruisers in your video, on 12 October 1943. There were two squadrons of RNZAF Kittyhawks in this attack as low cover for the bombers. In the months after this main attack, the RNZAF attacked Rabul frequently. The Kittyhawks were fighter-bombers, and in one pass down the harbour, the pilot I flew with went in to bomb, and sank a small freighter, and shot up a Japanese aircraft, and when he got back to base, he found that he ACTUALLY also destroyed a Zero outright. The pilots following him into the attack saw that a Zero dived steeply into attack him and was either disabled, or the pilot killed from the explosion of the bomb he sank the freighter with. The zero dove straight into the sea, tearing off its wings.
