1st of all, Santa Clara is one of the hottest possible places to build a stadium in the SF Bay proper. Candlestick Point gets those cooling breezes off the bay and would have been the best location. Plenty of space for parking and retail development, which is what the Yorks wanted originally. For some reason things fell apart and they shifted to Santa Clara. I’m guessing Santa Clara ponied up cash and tax incentives that the Yorks couldn’t pass up. I don’t know if Ed or Eddy Jr. would have done anything differently. It’s a business after all. As someone who attended the Chelsea-Wrexham match back in July & sat in the upper section, I can tell you it was uncomfortable sitting up there even with the match having a 7pm kickoff. That is the reason why I think the match had kind of a poor attendance when compared to other exhibition matches involving European clubs that Levi's has hosted in the past (even though both Chelsea & Wrexham are pretty popular clubs in the US) because people weren't willing to pay for seats that left them exposed to the sun especially the upper section ones. I find it kind of shocking that FIFA selected Levi's Stadium as a 2026 World Cup venue despite this problem because it will be a major issue for both players & fans especially given the fact that many World Cup matches will have midday kickoffs to cater to European TV audiences. Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto would have been a better choice to host World Cup matches (like it did in 1994) mainly because it is cooler & there are more shaded areas.
@tk80mufa5

Good comment! 👍 1994 was also a bad World Cup due to games being played during daylight in the unforgiving summer heat. But FIFA don't care. FIFA presidents think of themselves as the ' football pope '. Last two World Cups were hosted in bad bad countries , 2022 especially was a complete bad joke. Before 2022 and 2018 , it was hosted in two of the most crime ridden countries on earth in 2010 & 2014. Look up the future 2030 and 2034 hosting of the FIFA World Cup. What a mess !!! FIFA is the problem. They don't care about the players , never have, never will. Old cryptkeepers in suits. P.S. you're right , if anything , games should be held 9 p.m. local time , that's the official match start of UEFA Champions League games , due to Spanish heat , which makes playing before that unbearable.

Great thorough video. I have to say it’s staggering this continued trend of building stadiums in the US without roofs. Either end of the weather spectrum you benefit from one, and it’s insane the Bills are not doing it in their new stadium. It’s entirely possible to have the whole snow thing without the fans getting snowed on. However, it’s all for nothing as the NFL is the number one sport and league where you don’t have fans, you have customers. The owners care about profit, not the fans. See the announced upgrades at the Levi all geared toward the 1%, not the real fans.

Just watched this video. My general thoughts and reactions. I bought SBLs, have seats. After experiencing Levi's, parking, sun & heat, I sell my tickets. Never go! I've been twice in 10 years. I never missed a game at Candlestick prior 20 years. 1) In the very early days of planning, we were told they were most likely modeling our new stadium after Arizona. 2) Has any nfl team other than the Niners built a non-dome stadium since 2011? 3) It's not just a few September games. My first game there was in November - we roasted. There's no substantial difference between September and October sun or temps in Santa Clara. So it's not just a couple of games. And it's not just the sun - there's no breeze. As you note, it's a stadium designed for a cool and windy site. 4) It's not just the east stands. My seats are in the middle deck in the north end zone. (Would be under the jumbotron in the images you showed). According to my neighboring seatholders who attend - they never get shade. Would a roof or sunshade help? I don't know. But I think the case for evaluating it, the scope of the issue, is bigger than suggested in your vid. And we shouldn't forget preseason, and the man who collapsed and died on a day it was 80° Don't want to deviate from roof topic too much... but the entire stadium is a disappointment. We got a stadium most fans refer to as "a really nice college stadium" but not an NFL stadium. It's also a horrible location, hemmed in by railroad tracks, the Canal, and Tasman: no opportunity to expand, add other attractions. They used terms like "near major freeways" when promoting... yeah, they're near... but there's no access directly from those major thoroughfares.... I don't know how parking is today. In 2014, when I got my tickets, I was assigned parking in an office park 0.8 miles away, no shuttles. What a joke! I don't know if they still do that. Overall, Levi's Stadium was a masterful real estate deal for the Yorks. Not a symbol of pride for the fans... we have the least impressive NFL stadium built in the last 15 years - maybe longer, depending on reactions to MetLife.

I think this stadium was built with bad timing in mind- the construction was built between old and modern and after this was built, all other NFL stadiums that followed stepped into the modern era. I think they rushed into this stadium knowing that they had put together a competitive team that had enough talent and coaching to make it back to the Superbowl but we all know after the stadium was built the wheels started turning drastically. They basically went from windy location at Candlestick Park to a hot and sun-baked location in Santa Clara. I wonder if there's always a rush for season ticket holders to try and grab sections away from the East side. Brodie Brazil, I just subscribed to your channel. I like your voice and approach and you described this issue quite well. Looking forward to watching more of your content.

Camping World Stadium in Orlando will be undergoing the same changes with additional added seats and concert pavilion addition in 2026. It is projected to cost $350 million and resemble Miami's stadium when completed.

This discussion is looking at it as though the stadium is not used unless except for football games. The shading would be beneficial for everything held their during spring to fall months.

Brodie I have a friend who is a pilot and a Niner fan as well. We've talked about this. His flight instructor shared that the FAA was already frustrated that the stadium was approved to be built in the potential flight path of the "secondary landing pattern directional geography" and the "emergency landing directional geography". Whether that's true or not I will not pretend to affirm. It's a third hand account which in journalism is speculation. It makes sense though. In the case they would have to build a second roof project it would come with painstaking cost regulator oversight more than usual and including expensive and possibly ugly FAA safety features such as permanent full time blinking red light spires and directional sign rooftop safety paint. They said ownership would have to foot the bill completely. They know that because the Bay Area's current economics and political views. It's crazy that this video popped up in my algorithm because we were talking about it maybe three to four weeks ago. One of our wealthy friends has paid for his pilot's license, training, and expenses these last three years so he can get a great job as both a commercial airline pilot and our friend's private jet pilot.

If they can just stick it out a couple more years, the 49ers can hold the fans hostage for the demolition and construction of a $5 billion new stadium…just like they’re trying to do now in Denver.

How about the niners upgrading the vip amenities for the Super Bowl and World Cup while substantially raising the season ticket price for the long time fans? It’s not fair to the long time season ticket holders who are getting priced out to take care of the vip’s and not the common fan.

Truth is this stadium would be perfect fire candlestick point. It’s cooler there and the hills to the west would provide the necessary shade on the east side of the stadium. The giants figured it out, built their stadium in sf. The warriors figured it out, built an arena down the street from the giants. The 49ers organization needs to wrap up development rights at candlestick point so that they can build their next stadium in that location. Stadium in south sf, headquarters in Santa Clara, and training camp in Rocklin. That was the formula that delivered them 5 superbowls. Get back to candlestick point as soon as possible and ditch the stadium in Santa Clara. They are the San Francisco 49ers, not the Santa Clara 49ers. Season ticket holder, I hope they figure it out.

Nice pipe dream. Will never happen. 20 years of development and negotiation at both Candlestick and Hunter's Point and they got NOWHERE. Access and egress into and out of both locations is HORRIBLE without major redevelopment of the existing infrastructure. Barring miracles, the 49ers won't be going back to Candlestick Point.

Let’s face the fact that the fans still pay those high prices to come and see the game and already know they will be sitting in the sun. Unless and until they refuse to pay those prices the owners could not care less. They are not going to spend that kind of money to modify the stadium as long as the fans continue to come and put up with the inconvenience!

Great analysis!!! Could a situation where it gets protected via a solution similar to Hamburg FCs stadium, same in Shalke 04s and the new Camp Nou in Barcelona happens where it’s a big old fabric thing that is retractable. With 4 nice scoreboards in the middle? Something low profile enough to protect all the field? Keep the thing open like SoFi, not an air conditioned done like Allegiant Stadium.

I have sat on the east side third deck and it was horrible. Could not enjoy a September game, was drenching with sweat, heat is gross and unbearable, worst NFL experience especially after being to SoFi and Allegiant. This stadium from the traffic off the highway, to parking, is trash and such a disappiontment. Not even a top 15 stadium in the league.

The weather trend is proving that things are staying hotter...for longer so this will likely become a problem when the discomfort is carrying over through late Sept into October, then we are taking about 4 home games that will be quite uncomfy out there where the...ahem...less rich people don't get the luxury of that shade which is no accident by the way. Given the architecture that we see being designed in the world, I've no doubt that something can certainly be done...it's a matter of money and the powers behind the 49ers and that stadium will want, most likely, a public funding commitment to finance a generous portion, if not all of it. According to business insider, roughly 114 million of public funds were used in it's initial construction...so the Niners will have their hands out for a financial solution. It goes to show you how a bunch of people with degrees can get together and approve a condescending stadium design that favors the very privileged, regarding shade...meanwhile the majority of the stadium has to figure it out for themselves...NFL games aren't cheap, hence that's a lot of money, in my opinion, for one to spend to be uncomfortable these days, but that's just me.

i think that the designers and lawmakers who designed and regulate this stadium are absolute charlatans and the fact that there is no shade is a signpost of death for our society. putting profit incentive above the wellbeing of thousands of people is typical of massive corporations and it happens every day. but this is something that has been requested thousands of times and really should not even be difficult or controversial at all. it should be done but we live in a piece of shit society.

Reminds me of the Rangers they built a really nice park and the fans had enough and stopped going because of the heat. They built a new park less then 20 years. 49ers were very short sighted and should have built more of a doom or at least a Euro style. Personally I hate the look and design of it, looks half done. Maybe the league would let them play at 10:00 a.m. ? That would solve the issue really. They play all over anyway now. It would be interesting to have a west coast team start early at home. Would it be that big a deal ?

If the 49ers new that they were going to move out of San Francisco and had their eyes set on this current stadium design. Out of all the cities in the Bay Area they could've moved to they chose that location in Santa Clara that is near an airport. Prohibiting them from having a roof on the stadium. They didn't have to move to Santa Clara, could've moved any where else in the Bay Area and still stayed as the San Francisco 49ers. Probably could've got a roof on the stadium too if they did move to a different city.

Great video Brodie and thanks for geeking out on the FAA stuff. I am thinking if they want to make provisions for the heat in late Aug through October, the plan should also include a provision for avoiding WET playoff games like the GB-SF last year. We have a dry climate for certain but there are those years where Dec-Jan can bring some storms. So, the answer, if they choose to do so, would be to construct something that protects fans from the sun and rain. Fans stay dry and comfortable and the players play on a consistency dry surface.
