He's aiming the laser manually, right? If so, I think that's why moving targets were a struggle. When he moves it by hand the velocity of the laser designation is going to be incredibly jittery, which would really throw off the missiles' ability to predict where to go. If laser designation was done from a targeting pod with a point track I think you would have a lot more luck hitting the moving tanks.

Don't know what exactly is programmed in DCS but it is normal for this type of directional ammunition to ignore its guidance when close to the target. The missile always comes in with a miss-distance and close to the target, this creates a yaw-angle between the LOS-laser-spot and the body of the missile. The closer to the target (or the larger the miss-distance) the faster the LOS will rotate (as viewed by the missile-body). A missile with a forward firing shaped charge benefits from having the body not rotating (any rotation will end up in a rotating jet of the shaped charge -> less penetration) when detonating the warhead. If the missile would follow guidance than it would always try to park the missile sideways onto the target and have the most rotation at the moment we want the least rotation. So if/when the rotation of the LOS exceeds a certain threshold it gets ignored for the remainder of the trip (which is very short as the fuze will trigger a few milliseconds later). Using a laser designator and have the ordnance ride in on the reflected laser-beam is always "body-pursuit" guidance (very good against fixed targets, not good against moving targets). Against moving targets you would want "proportional navigation"-guidance (or better) but if the targets stops moving then the missile will fly 'circles' around it as it keeps the target at a certain (non-zero) angle. A human operator could adjust and aim the laser at the ground in front of the moving target.
@voradfils
2 жыл бұрын
It's a common misconception that proportional navigation tries to keep the target in the same spot. That is misleading and only half-true when the target and the missile are both moving at a constant speed and not changing direction which is almost never the case when rocket motors are involved. Instead, the missile is trying to move the target to a position that allows it to stay still (without the missile turning) at that moment in time and that "perfect" spot is moving around all the time, even if very slightly. PN can therefore be used against stationary targets just fine.

Yes, something like this: The Ukrainians use their M270 (which have been donated by Germany and the UK) to fire at the Antonivska Bridge in Kherson. A Russian counter-battery radar is able to pin down the coordinates from which the rockets were launched. Soon, Russian fighter jets take off from Crimea and try to hunt down the MLRS. However, the system will probably be on the move again by the time the Russians arrive. As a high-value target, it will also be protected by Ukrainian SAMs. Can it still be done (at least in DCS)?

So, wargaming/naval scenario/question. late 1980s/early 1990s USN versus early WW2 air defenses. Mission objective is to precisely eliminate known munitions factories, bridges, and a local railway junction. Big questions are "how many bombs are needed, how many trips do the American aircraft need to make, do the American aircraft take any causalties at all (and, relatedly, are the air defenses and fighters sent up even remotely a threat)". If the answer is "this gets very boring", feel free to roll the WW2 air defenses further back into the war to bring more capable aircraft/anti-aircraft artillery/radar systems into play.
@OG_Mac79
2 жыл бұрын
The main thing with that is modern aircraft fly so much higher than ww2 aircraft and there are no missiles in ww2. So a few ultra modern murder hornets could fly in orbit at max altitude and just rain down pain on everyone since ww2 AA couldnt get high enough to hit them. Early 90's had laser targeted bombs so fewer bombs needed to hit a target too. So a few missile trucks and a few fully loaded bombers would decimate everything.

@HILLEVILOVE

Hellfire was not as much a replacement, but as a response to the demise of the Soviet threat and subsequent downsizing of the invasion defense force in general. In the latter parts of the Cold War there were over 30 coastal forts with mostly 10.5cm and 12.7cm, and a few 15cm canons. There were about a dozen mine fields and numerous torpedo batteries. A friend of mine was a battery commander on some of these forts and they were tasked with stopping a Soviet naval invasion force of 30000 men along one of the main sea axis', coming through the narrow Fjords.

The issue is painting a T-90 with a laser designator. A colleague of mine with a British Army recce unit did some simulated exercises recently using AJAX and when they lased the T-90 they immediately got incoming from the tanks so Socks is seriously likely to end up on the wrong end of some 125mm tank shells. The T-90 has a system that detects and automatically tracks a laser back to it's source, the turret slews round in that direction and Russian tank SOPs is to immediately fire two rounds. The first is likely to strike close but the second will be much more accurate. Sockington lasing from the trees is likely to result in something similar to the scene from Fury where the M4s engage the German infantry in the trees.
@randalljones4370
2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure is my information is correct, but I've read two online sources which say the Max Vertical deflection of the T-90 barrel is 30 degrees. If true, this would seem to argue for lazing from drones. Quick-n-dirty math says if a drone could laze successfully from 1000 feet, they would have a safe radius over a single tank of roughly 1700 meters. I'm not sure the max distance is for a stable lazing platform? I'm finding statements of 2-5 km. From the size of the truckmounted LRFs, you'd need a Bayraktar or Global Hawk. Can you laze with a 'Powerpoint' handheld laser? If so, cheap commercial drone swarms could be good. ... but's there'd be herds of cats swirling about on the ground. Dang those pesky red dots !!!

Or LOAL. And whether or not direct mode, or top down for launch/flight profile. And they have more range than 10km, lol. And that’s just the basics of them. I was an avionics tech on AH-1W’s which is misleading, as we work on every electrical/electronic system on the bird, including targeting and on weapons systems, of your part of fire control, or if they need more help then avionics in fire control, they’ll pull better avi techs to help.

What a glorious decommissioníng of the Admiral Kuznetsov. Destroying the ocean-going tugs that also sail with the Kuznetsov would have been cool too. Nothing says quality Russian maintenance than the Kuznetsov broken down and adrift at sea. 𝑰'𝒎 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝑺𝒂𝒚'𝒊𝒏, 𝑰'𝒎 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝑺𝒂𝒚'𝒊𝒏!

The SU25 is only “so frigging hard to fly” because here it is so heavily overloaded… a mistake I used to make with it when I first started DCS. Take only the armament you require to complete your objective and it flies nimbly and responsively!

Yup, even most common loadout for CAP or air to air is just like 2 bvr and 2 wvr missiles.

Looks like salvo off two at a time would increase probability of kill on an attack run vs 10kph moving tanks

They won't be using them for air to ground strike from manned platforms. My guess is they will be using these on the TB2 Bayraktars as a more potent standoff weapon for them.

120-150K per Hellfire vs 4M per T90 = Pretty good return on investment / economics for the attacker.

I'm thinking, you have some new east and west tech mesh. So.. you're misssion if you choose to accept it is to use your new Ukrainian toys to clear the Nuclear power plant at ZPHoHZizadiniadonsk from the Chechen canibals battalion and it's commander Kadir Kadurov. Good luck. 😊

So you think you could mount a laser on a small drone to lase the targets?? That would be killer!!!

Imagine paring this combo with an airborne lasing platform like the Kiowa, which is in independent development. Multiple birds lasing and launching would be devestating!

Norway's hellfire are adapted for ground launch, I doubt the Su-25 can be outfitted unless its like the 29 situation where you can trick the Su-25

In the real world the hardest thing is getting the tank, laser and aircraft in the same place at the same time.
