I think the world of watchdogs is completely plausible. They explain the purpose and utility of ctOS in the trailer and why everything is connected to a central system and Aiden could have an extremely complicated program that automatically queries the system and finds vulnerabilities using an arithmetic at the press of a button.

The phone isn't what does all the tricks. It's just connected to a much better computer that can do it. The phone is there just so you can remotely connect to the computer and possibly have a simple GUI(graphical user interface) script that simplifies the ability to perform all these actions with a touch of a button while you're already connected to the system.

For example if ctOS knows where he is and the direction he points the phone it would absolutely be possible the backdoor gives him the access.

Well a phone uses radio signals with cellphone towers to fans it information, for internet it uses very high frequencies so why can't you access those signals. Sure they might be encrypted but you can have access to all of those signals. It's be hard because you'd need to know the exact frequency and what not, and then decrypt it.

-Well the traffic light thing ain't so far away, It's only tedious. Needing to put a switch on every damn traffic light and a bluetooth adaptor. BUT It still can be done. -The ID card thing is quite easy with all of these social sites and government sites(for example someone can see your medical card by hacking into your clinic's database which is usually on the clinic's site itself). -For security cameras you could always have a radio jammer or something like that in your pocket -For internet access everywhere there are lots of apps and devices for your phone to break WI-FI passwords. Most hackers can break most WI-FI passwords in maximum 30 minutes. -For opening doors and locks it isn't hard, it's just tedious to use a lockpick on a 12 pin lock, but most doors are only 6-8. -For everything that isn't wireless, knowledge, a little bit of wandering around with the cables and the right tools will make you redirect or open/close every connection you want.

Honestly, most of the things shown in Watch Dogs could be standardized in the distant future. But, I can almost guarantee that intruding into anything would be much harder than is portrayed in the game. And even if an exploit were to be discovered, it would take years to figure out how the system worked. Lastly, and most importantly, one would need to know how to write the software to take advantage of the exploit. For example, one would most likely need to have experience with a low level language like C

Programmers should be the ones to worry the most. It's the programs/servers/databases they made that the hackers will penetrate
@doom429
10 жыл бұрын
David MacNeil First of all, programmers are the ones that create enterprise software. Second of all, Heartbleed. This vulnerability showed not only a problem with openssl, but with other programs not clearing the sensitive data (keys, usernames, passwords, etc.) before they deallocating the memory. Third, "for all encryption keys there must be a decryption key". Everything you send over the net can be intercepted and possibly decrypted. If not, there is always sidejacking...
@doom429
10 жыл бұрын
David MacNeil Basically, what I am saying is that it is the programers responsibility to ensure that all information is properly secured at all time and is properly disposed of. It does not matter if it is a server, network application or a game of pong. With regards to everything can be broken into, that was primarily directed towards TheMidearth. I apologize for not making that clear. I just think that as a programmer, he should realize just how insecure our "hypersensetive personal Data" is. Below is just a few examples thought up after just waking up. So sorry if they are unclear. I would have to disagree with "not everyone who programs will be programming network applications or servers". About a quarter of my school projects have incorporated networking in some form (and I have found exploits for all of them but was unable to fix due to time constraints). Also, most programmers I know have made a website at some point. By ignoring any networking, you are severely limiting what your program can achieve. For example, a way to update your program. It tends to be a lot nicer if someone can start your program and it will inform them if there is a new update and wish to download it. But this can also be exploited by dns spoofing or ip redirection to a rogue executable. Even if you do not use any networking, your program can still be exploited. For example, you're on a linux workstation and your program reads/writes some run-time information in /tmp/. If someone else loges into the same workstation, they are also able to read/write to the file. Potentially, they are able to extract sensitive information or modify the flow of control and injecting a shell giving them full access to your account.

Most of what happens in watch dogs is not possible with current tech or so easily accessible. You need to go through encrypted files, understand the coding for many OS and learn a variety of low level and high level computer languages. Something that usually takes many years to learn or a few years if you are a prodigy child. Even then, doing all this still takes time, you can't shut down or manipulate a system instantly. So overall, watch dogs is not realistic, we can't do that stuff in this world unless we are geniuses.

The people who are commenting make me laugh. Googling stuff to find how to hack is amateur. Hacking comes from within. Its a skill based off knowledge of a network and knowing how to decrypt certain things. Its not about scripting. That's for video games. Anyone can hack a video game. Just remember this is coming from someone with a decent hacking experience. I used to hack into computers at the library. I saw some things I cannot un see. And I've also shut down a chain of computers at my school. Its a good skill to have especially when you think someone is hiding something from you. I'm not promoting hacking, I'm just saying its useful for fun not illegal things.

its actually more possible then you are making it out to be. All traffic control uses a centralized system in major city's especially, now these systems like in watch dogs you would have to physically access (although there may be a backdoor you can access without physically going there) but once you have tapped into there system you can gain essentially free roam. There system will be in proprietary code but once you figure it out you could easily set up a server that is connected to your phone and the traffic system that when you hit a button on your phone it tells your server to send the traffic server a certain set of commands and bam you have a green light. Many credit and debit cards now days contain a nfc chip which with the right technology in your phone (most phones can pick of near field information) you can easily gain there debit/credit info. ATM's are notoriously insecure you can even look up online how to change certain parameters without actually opening the machine up. It's also incredibly easy to wirelessly tap into other peoples phones/camera's as long as there not hard wired and you can find the network they are using. Essentially most the things you see in watch dog's are entirely possible if you set everything up first which is far more difficult then simply tapping into the ctos but still very possible.

Watch_Dogs' city of Chicago can and might become a possibility, as long as the government approves of the change. But I highly doubt it, automatically programmers all over the globe will reject this. However, if you manage to find the proper equipment and software, you can actually become Aiden. You can turn off a TV with a small remote! Find the backdoors for a couple of the major internet providers and set-up a couple of strong hot-spots and hook 'em up to a data collecting computer and with the right set-up, you can collect data and with time, ID everyone connected to the hotspots. For a phone, I recommend android devices as well since their OS is "open-source" (not really) and once rooted, you can download applications to hijack webpages that are being fed into the WiFi network you are connected to. You can perform MiM attacks and so on. But before becoming an hacker, I recommend creating a "rogue profile" Tinkernut explains it. - Any Fellow Hackers/Programmers Are Welcome to comment suggestions and any corrections.
