Yes, unfortunately our field within the helping profession seems to be one of the most under paid. I've heard various arguments such as many positions being state funded or mental health professionals simply accepting low salaries. It's very frustrating because of the academic requirements needed to obtain employment while other similar professions have higher starting salaries. I haven't been practicing long, so I'm not entirely sure what contributes to our overall low salary.

Hi Fortunepsych. You're right. There definitely many reasons for the low pay and definitely being state funded or funded through foundational grants is an issue. I'm wondering how much the licensing requirements will continue to go up and if the pay will ever catch up.

I'm a second semester freshmen and struggling already with self-care. My human services professor offered self-care tips. I'm just trying to figure out what store I can go to and purchase more hours in a day. Will LCSW free up more time for me and pay more?

Hi Gregg. With Social work, counseling and therapy... the jobs are really more similar than different. So, the burnout is going to be about the same. I'm going to do a self care video giving some tips that I've used. These are really good fields; counselors, social workers, etc., just need to be able to spend more time with clients, less time with the over abundance of paper work and these organizations definitely need to give at least one self care day per month. The type of setting matters too. I have seen that many counselors and social workers work in schools and in that setting you get summers off, weekends and holidays. Much fortune and pursuing your career and degree. Please let me know what other questions you may have.

hi, im not a counselor but enjoy your videos, my sis is phd in psychology though. it appears that being a school psychologist is way to go as it requires similar clinical exp. and the salary to match

@@77RyanC Hi RyanC. Thank you for watching. I appreciate the support. School psychology definitely has pros like, breaks and summer off, salary, and being able to do a variety of things; counseling, assessment, consultation, etc. I would say that school psychologists are overworked and sometimes the work-life balance is difficult to maintain sometimes but, I think that the positives definitely balance things out. I think it's a really good field. Please let me know what questions you may have. Thank you again for watching.
