My grandpa didn't agree with the Nazi ideology, but was drafted into the Wehrmacht as a medic. At the end of the war, he was stationed in Africa when Germany capitulated. His commanding officer, a real nazi, ordered the remaining soldiers to fight to the last man. My grandpa refused and instead took his shirt to use as a white flag and surrendered to the Allies, saving many of his comrades' lives in the process. He was a hero. Edit: After some pointed out in the comments that the Axis was driven out of Africa in 1943, I checked up the story with my family again. I got something mixed up. The surrender spearheaded by my grandpa did not happen at the end of the war but when the fight in Africa was basically lost. They received the order from the Führer himself to fight to the last man, and my grandpa was the first one brave enough to say "Fuck this, I'm out!" and then he did what he did. I apologize for the mixup.

Please don't undermine such an important day in my country because your country had it worse. Especially when you dont even know what happens on those days. May 4th is the day we stay silent for 2 minutes to remember the dead and mourn for them, we remember to be greatful to live in a free country safe from war. And on the 5th, we openly celebrate that freedom. It has nothing to do with independance, it has to do with the fact that the Netherlands is free of war. We celebrate being free, we celebrate no war and we celebrate for the ones who saved us. America never really fought ww1 and ww2 close to home since the fights were in Asia and Europe but please dont undermine the horrible shit Adolf Hitler did to the countries he took over. He didn't just kill jews. He killed disabled people, gay people, gypsies. He didn't care. He had a fucking "superhuman" and "lesserhuman" (loosly translated) idea where certain people would be discriminated and openly hated upon just because their hair was darkly colored. @@hunterwolf8539 no, first off, fighting in an offensive war isn't defending anything. Secondly, there's nothing virtuous about fighting in a war you're clearly on the wrong side of. @@1v966 Because his family was proud of their heritage and "pure bred German" His words not mine. The last words my grandmother told me before she died was "never tell anyone you're Bohemian. The Nazis will come and kill you. " I was 5. She said that to a 5 year old. So no. We didn't date. His family systematically killed my entire lineage and people. Why. Would. We. Date. 🤨😳 It was enough that we could have a decent conversation and a good chuckle at the irony of times changing so quickly in just 3 generations. The younger generation may think that "nazi" is a myth and a good insult to throw at anyone not woke. To the rest of us it embues fear, sadness and grief.

Well… my German grandfather was a child and hid in huge straw and hey piles on the field when the Americans or British would bomb the city. He was a very kind and calm man I respected a lot. Btw they’re still finding bombs till this day, just three days ago my train was 20 minutes late because of an old bomb from WW2

Have you ever seen or read The Book Thief? I remember it really affected me, because I realized that German children were just as scared and in danger during Allied bombings as British children were during Axis bombings. Innocents being killed on both sides :(
