Life is so hectic, but James Taylor is one of only a handful of recording artists/singers that put me at peace almost immediately. So glad he’s been and always will be a part of my musical life. ‘Love Always’ 1 John 4:8

One of the songs that is a soundtrack to my life. I can remember hearing this for the first time from an AM radio in my dad's '62 Rambler. The DJ simply said ''James Taylor'' and then I heard that classic D chord acoustic riff he is so famous for. When the choir came in about halfway through the song it had become a ''religious'' experience for me. For a 16 year old guitar playing lad trying to find his way in this old world......well this song became an anthem to me. And by the way......I've gotten to know Jesus, I still play guitar, and I still LOVE this song!

'62 Rambler... Oh wow, that would be an incredible way to hear this song for the first time. I'm curious - was it winter or summer when you heard this for the first time? I put it into the rotation of our local AM "oldies" station and it always sends chills up my spine when it comes on while I'm cruising in my '66 Corvair...

This is a completely different recording from the "Sweet Baby James" album. In what seemed to be a dry run for recording JT's "Mud Slide Slim" album, this version of "Country Road" was re-recorded at Crystal Sound Studios by Richard Sanford Orshoff, produced by Peter Asher. This was the first recording of the incredible combination of JT, Carole King on piano, Leland Sklar on bass, and Russ Kunkel on drums. It was released as a single on December 30, 1970. Recording of "Mud Slide Slim" started a few days later on January 3, 1971 by the same team.

It’s a fake choir sound. In my opinion it would’ve been much better if they had used a real choir (this one just sounds fake) and had it follow the chord progression of the song. It gets pretty crunchy in places because of the clash between the chord that the choir is holding and what the rest of the band is playing (ex. at 2:45).

1:43 I don’t get why they added the fake choir sound in there. It doesn’t sound very real at all, and it’s made worse by the fact that it doesn’t follow the chord changes - it just holds the D chord throughout (for example, 2:45 is very crunchy because the choir doesn’t follow the chord progression). I would’ve liked this version much better (more so than the one found on the albums) if there’s wasn’t the cheesy choir sound in there, or if the sound at least followed the chord progression.
@kenrehor

It's not fake! It's James (and maybe Joni Mitchell) on harmony vocals. In that era, James frequently asked his audience to sing and hold the 'D' chord just as it sounds on this recording.
