Naming your opponent's card when you "coup" or assassinate is a variant that seems to have elevated gameplay significantly for my friends and I. If they don't have the card you name, your coup/assassination basically "misses", but you learn critical information about the possibility of their hand. Try it!

for me, the best combo is double contessa, but played like the ambassador/duke. exchanging in this game is highly underrated, as it allows you to see what other cards are in play, and it prevents other players from being able to count your cards. you also become an assassin threat, which is fine as you have a contessa to back your words, and a second one to prove more doubtful to have as a second assassination attempt comes at you.

I enjoy to have the duke in my combo, as he is great for Coup's, as he can get the most coins. I don't really like the contessa as it does nothing but block, which kinda sucks early on.

I really enjoy this game, it's one of my go to filler games when we are waiting for more folks on game night. Yes there is a small balance issue with the duke, but that actually adds to the game in my opinion. Perfect balance does not always make a game better

Thank you for the video! 👍 I like to know the goal of a game at or near the very start of the instructions. Here’s a summary of the game rules in just 100 words: Players start with two action influencer cards in hand and two coins. Win by eliminating all opponents’ influencers. On your turn, either take 1 income coin, take 2 foreign aid coins (can be blocked by any opponent’s Duke card), eliminate opponent’s card with 7 coins, take 3 with your Duke, eliminate a card with Assassin and 3 coins (blocked by any Contessa), exchange Ambassador to select 1 of 2 drawn cards, steal 2 with Captain (blocked by Captain or Ambassador). Eliminate/turn one card up when challenged for action/block without card or failing a challenge. Cards surviving challenges are replaced.

Wait. Tom says that the coup action goes as follows: pay 7 coins, choose a rival player to turn a card face-up, and if that happens twice that player is out. Did he miss a step there? A player gets picked twice for a coup, and he's out?
@Jeff321
10 жыл бұрын
That's correct. It takes some turns to get that many coins but yes, you only have 2 cards and when you lose both, you're out. It's a quick game though so the player elimination is not a problem.

It's best to buy a second copy so you can play up to ten. Six is the minimum for me, but eight is really optimum.

The best moves on Coup is when you do trick people mind by doing move likes this following one: Someone steal two coins from you. You have the Capitan or Ambassador but you let them steal from you. Then when someone else steal coins from you (hopefully after the 1st player) stop them saying you have the Capitan/Ambassador if they are new to this move they may challenge you. (Because in their mind will be WTF, why you let them steal from you and stop this 2nd theft) This move and other one are what make Coup a great have for gaming gathering and even lunch time during work

Looks like the character design and currency (ISK) are from EVE Online. Strange, doesn't seem to be affiliated with EVE?
@Warpchy

ISK apparently is one of those generic space terms that gets coined in Sci Fi stuff. The theme is from The Resistance, which is probably generic space punk at this point.
@gastchannel

Warpchy ISK is the currency of Iceland, where CCP - the developer of EVE Online - are based. I'm not contradicting you, ISK sounds pretty cool, but that's the reason behind ISK in EVE. I guess maybe the original game had art based on EVE and that's why the new version also has similar artwork.
@Warpchy

Gast Well that makes more sense. But the game is suppose to be Resistance themed, so I personally haven't heard anything tying it with Eve actually. Google turned up ISK = International Standard Kredit. This is from their Kickstarter Page. www.kickstarter.com/projects/2012515236/coup-bluff-and-deception-in-the-world-of-the-resis/posts/467586

Warpchy Neat, didn't know that. I couldn't find any information about it having anything to do with EVE either, but the artwork looks very similar to the character creator in that game. I guess it was just inspiration. :)

Lugo428 The purpose of this is to learn how other players think from round to round. This way you can always change up your strat to call their bluff or bait them into making mistakes. its a constant back and forth of mind games and it works because players are quick to call a rematch even after the 10th round.

GinDragon it really isnt. I can understand why u would think that, on face value it is a op card. However it just makes you targets for assassinations. I like to lay low and actually lose a card early to help me get end game. I have a reputation of being the one who introduced the game to people hence more experienced than other people so they target me, thats why i do it. Half of the game is understand your opponents

I've watched about six of your reviews because I like your color commentary on the strengths and weaknesses, but you REALLY need to improve your explanations of how the games work. You should ALWAYS start with the objective/win conditions so everything else can be put into it's context and use the theme as a schema for the context. I had no idea what the point of this game was (save the hint from the game's name) or even the point of the coins. I get that you don't want to get into details but this gave me no idea how the game works. Take Citadels, for instance (just played yesterday). I might say so something like:. The object of the game is to get the most points by building the "best" city. A city is composed of these district cards, and the game ends when someone has built their seventh district. You pay for districts with gold and the cost of the district is indicated by these emblems on the cards. Those emblems also represent the points that district contributes to your total score when the game ends. Blah, blah, blah. Now everything else you say is understood within the larger context and makes comprehending and retaining everything much easier. Just my two gold coins. Thanks for the work you do. Your explanation of the feel of the game and it's strengths and weaknesses is excellent. No one is better at it.

Ugh no no no, I like bluffing games but this one is so basic, boring and unbalanced. The Duke is so powerful in this game that EVERYONE claims to be the Duke. And if you get lucky with your two starting cards you can breeze to victory! Duke and Contessa basically is almost auto-win.
@theeImperial
10 жыл бұрын
Not entirely true, sir. If somebody plays too strong of a game, the other players will just choose to coup/assassinate them first. The dukes are a really easy target for assassinations and stealing on any given turn.

I feel the same way. This was a huge hit at a recent game con, and I found it utterly boring. Then again, I found Love Letter to be just as boring.
@StefanLopuszanski
10 жыл бұрын
Having played the game dozens if not a hundred times by now I can tell that you're completely off basis. Someone who has the Duke and Contessa is just asking to be targeted by Captains. Anyone claiming to be a Duke is either called out (by someone who has one or two of them), or is targeted because of his perceived power. It is much better to be safe and stay in as long as possible than go for a quick jump in power. That's what makes Coup so amazing and fun for both beginners and advanced players.
@TheBrokenMeeple
10 жыл бұрын
Love Letter I quite like, though that's even quicker to play and teach which is a bonus! But if you get Duke and Contessa Ryan in your starting hand you just breeze to the finish. You can't be assassinated and you can get money faster than the other players. And no group has ever had the mentality to target-coup that lucky player because they may not even be certain he has that combo in his hand.
@TheBrokenMeeple
10 жыл бұрын
The Captain is barely used from experience. Most people trade him off or just lie and claim they are the Duke anyway. So you end up with 4-5 Dukes constantly and so who do you pick? For a bluffing filler I'd much rather pull out Kakerlaken Poker - no need to worry about balance or even having to win the game, just simple, hilarious fun!

I would not trust anyone in real life who is playing a bluffing game and takes that opportunity to declare that they don't lie in real life. Those are usually the people who have the most vile of secrets. Keep your children away from them.
