I recently bought a Ford E Transit, long, tall 350 model to convert. The fact that these electric vans have to be fast charged frequently is a little bit of a drawback, but we have no desire to drive 500 miles per day, which would require fast charging 5 or 6 times to drive that many miles in a day. Instead, the van is perfect for boon docking and stealth camping, with a huge built-in power supply for long stays without shore power. I'm adding solar and a lot of Lithium storage batteries to run an electric heater, and fridge. The van's heater isn't very efficient, and it cuts down the van's range considerably, so I plan to capture the suns' energy to power a 12 volt heater so we can use the van's huge battery to get to the next location. Campground shore power will charge the van overnight, so we have another 100 miles to go before stopping to fast charge. Those unfamiliar with EVs may be surprised to learn there is are robust fast charging networks up and down the West Coast, and along all the major routes in the nation. The Tesla network with its thousands of superfast chargers is opening up to E Transit drivers and other EVs next spring I've heard. Ford has a larger battery upgrade in the works for the E transit. Being the vans are primarily sold for commercial use in fleets, the hope is Ford would be wise to offer a battery swap as a smart move to retain fleet customers that have invested in electric vans. My van has 120 volt pro power on board, a really nice feature for camping off grid. Solar and extra Lithium battery storage could make the system even better. I really like your build, and I am incorporating some of your ideas, including using upcycled materials. I'll try to document some of the details on my channel as the build progresses and talk more about the advantages and disadvantages of using the E Transit for the van build, including the disadvantage of the price gouging by the larger fast charging networks that really discourages people from switching to a larger electric van or pickup that uses a lot of power per mile compared to an EV car. I've driven over 100 thousand all electric miles in smaller EVs. So far, I love the E Transit van.

Does the cat stay in the van when you're parked, or does she need to be tethered?
@SteveAudra
Жыл бұрын
She's quite the scaredy cat so she pretty much stays in the van unless it's dark and we have a quiet spot to park. Then I take her out for a "walk." When we started, her brother was also with us and and he liked to go out a lot more. We always watched both like a hawk because they can get out of their harnesses if we're not careful.

I know you previously had the two cats from your first tour my condolences if she has passed❤ i did want to know was it difficult for your fur baby to go from a two kitty home to one in the van or was it a bit easier to adjust since it is tighter space and she can always see her emotional support humans?
@SteveAudra
7 ай бұрын
Hello and thank you. This is a bit of a long answer... Yes, we started with the two cats. Our long-haired male loved it when we took him outside when we traveled and would often get a little testy when when it was time for him to get back in the van after his walk. He loved being outside. When we were home, he spent a lot of time out in our screened-in porch. One night we found a hole in the screen and he was nowhere to be found. We searched and searched for months and never found him. It was heart-wrenching. But, in hindsight we realize it was better that it happened at home because it would have been much more stressful on the road. I share that because it demonstrates how different cats can be. We think he broke out through the screen, maybe chasing after something or just wanting his freedom outdoors. But on the flipside, his sister has always been more timid and doesn't have any interest in roaming. She'll go outside on the harness and poke around a bit but has no interest in going out during the day and we can leave our slider door wide open and don't have to worry about her going out. We thought the loss of her brother might cause distress to Gray Gray but she seemed to easily adjust. Transitioning to full-time has also been better for her, I think. It used to be a little stressful for her when we would take her from the house to the van when we did part-time travel. Now the van is her home and she's seems pretty comfortable and content. All that to say, cats all seem to be very different but from our experience with several different cats over the years they seem to do well adjusting to change. But it's important to know their personality and how to handle different situations. We are very sensitive to things we know might make GG uncomfortable and we try to minimize those things. We try to create a safe space for her and I know she just loves being with us! I hope this helps!
