After receiving lots of comments complaining about the music (which I, unfortunately, thought was appropriate for the topic) I created and posted a version of the same movie but without the bagpipe music in the background => kzitem.info/news/bejne/pKCAvHasfYCplno

***** I apologize . . . I thought the soundtrack was appropriate, but it is quite obvious that most other viewers do not agree. I have posted another version (kzitem.info/news/bejne/pKCAvHasfYCplno) minus the bagpipe music.

Cool demo! I was reading about neutrino oscillation and found myself here.

The last motion is a superposition of the first two :)

A V Actually that is incorrect. The coupled motion is a completely separate type of oscillatory behavior involving the exchange of energy between the two parts of a system. It is not a superposition of the two normal modes of oscillation.

A V is right. The coupled motion is indeed a superposition of both modes of oscillation. There are no more degrees of freedom for the system than those two and everything else can be described as a superposition of the two. This is just why those eigenmodes are so significant, in all of physics at the quantum level.

+ Fid Rewe. The coupled motion is NOT a superposition of the two modes of oscillation. It arises from a completely different set of initial conditions. It seems that the vibration energy oscillates from one pendulum to the other. I was wondering if this energy is "physic" or "virtual". Suppose that beat frequency is 1 Hz; Would it be possible to use this oscillation for exciting a mode with a resonant frequency equal to 1Hz?
