Haunting and beautiful song. I was turned on to it many years ago from a band mate. I still carry it with me.

This song always gives me the chills... maybe the best performance I've ever seen Richard give of it. The time jump in the middle of the song blows my mind. One second it's the Prince of Wales and marshals in chain mail... the next it's a flare and barbed wire in the trenches. This song would make a hell of a movie.

Feels very frenetic from the original... like the courier is on edge... different tuning really changes the feel and better captures whats going on for 'The Courier'... Five years later

Love the way you develop characters and bring them to life. Although a teacher now, I once drove 18-wheelers. After seeing you at the Narrows in Fall River, my wife jokingly thinks all your songs are about truck-drivers.

I feel your pain. It bothers me as well. Not just for him but whenever I see an amazing musician not getting the attention they deserve. It hurts a little. I can imagine it hurts a lot more for them.

A lovely musical glimpse into the thankless and unsung job of military courier, filled by young men throughout the ages. Watch "Our World War", Episode I (of III), BBC, to see a brilliant and remarkable visual portrayal of what it must have been like, during WWI.

Thank you SO MUCH. This is one of my absolute favorites. I find myself wondering whether there is ANY possible way that a 45 year old who never played a string instrument could learn to play like you do. Straightfoward melodies with a full spectrum of sound. Hard to believe that you accomplish that by yourself. Here's hoping that you get around to "Fishing" and "Cold Missouri Waters" soon. This is a spectacular idea. And, one last thing... come to Louisville, KY sometime.

+Seth Craigo-Snell Seth, you've got to just pick up a guitar and try- learn the basics first and get your fingers sorted, its hard at first but don't give up. There are loads of tutorials here on KZitem which will take you from absolute beginner right up to whatever level you wanna go to... then a day will come when you will tune the guitar into DADGAD, watch carefully where Richard puts his fingers, and go... age has little to do with it- I'm 57 and I just played a passable (to me lol) version of this wonderful song! :)

Saw Shindell twice back in the mid 90’s, and he was amazing live. Unfortunately, he now tries to reinvent his otherwise amazing writing/playing/singing with some weird slack version of the original. One of my absolute favorite artists, but can’t stand seeing/listening to him now on KZitem.

If you voted for T rum p then rs said don't bother showing up @ his shows . Not very liberal . Especially coming from someone who shills che guevara tee shirts . Btw rich , how about you learn the words to your songs that you wrote . 85 % of the shows i attended you forgot the words ; once you even a bo rt ed ( there's a liberal term for you ) a complete song . Do us a favor & stay in argentina .
